AFfER DOING A little research, I've
realized that I'm not alone in these scams.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation's
(FBI) Web site lists a number of scams
perpetrated on unsuspecting Americans,
ranging fron! e-mails, including one that
was supposedly from The Oprah WilifTey
Show, notifying recipients of their nomi­
nation for the talk show mogul's million­
aire show.
According to the Web site, recipients of
the communlcation were required to sub­
mit their nante, address, phone number
and e-mail. The e-mail didn't provide a
mailing address.
Another scam, also reported by the
FBI's Web site, slates that U.S . Customs
and Border Rrotection "stopped a diplo­
mat ... carrying a consignment to be
delivered to the recipient's address. The
consigurnent ,allegedly contains millions
of dollars."
Again, recipients of the e-mail were
asked to submit their personal info.
Wouldn't yO!! think that the U.S. govern­
ment could fmd you if they needed to?
Dick Brodbeck, director of communica­
tions with the Better Business Bureau in
Ridgeland, saide:'"mail scams are prolific,
but many residents have become wary of
them. He also said people should delete
e-mails from folks they don't know and
avoid clicking on links from unsolicited
e-mails.
He said the best way to avoid becoming
a victim is to think before giving out per­
sonal info. "If it sounds too good to be

true, it probably is," he added.
DESPITE THE obvious scams, I was
intrigued With one offer from September
10. It was from a man, called Mr. Zhang
Jianguo. He wanted to offer me "a lucra­
tive financial business transaction." The
sender, though, didn't provide much
information on what that transaction
might be.
Another guy, this one was named
Bernard Parker, wanted my help on
September 4 to re-profile "funds to the
tune of $39.4 million," which he wants
kept under my supervison.
Really?
I can't balance my checkbook. I run
through money like flour through a sift
Last week, I got a notice in the mail
telling me that I had more than $200 in
overdraft fees. And this man wants me to
keep an eye on millions of dollars?
For his sake, he better find somebody
else.
Mrs. Helena Cole from Great Britian
ought to look for another candidate to
help with her task as well.
On September 8, Mrs_ Cole, sent me an
e-mail asking me to help dole out her for­
tune. I was moved by her story. "I have
not particularly lived my life so well, as I
never really cared for anyone," the elec­
tronic communication read.
I was definitely moved with the letter's
personal touches, such as the greeting:
"Dear SirlMadam."
Yes, I was touched. So much so that I
touched my mouse and moved that e­
mail to my trash folder. Delete!

with one resident, but has since grown to
a 40-bed facility and one of only 13 in
the state to incorporate the Medicaid
Waiver program .
"We are family, so my responsibilities
know no boundaries," said Steverson. " I
manage 50-pius e mployees, payroll.

day-to-day operation of the facilit y. We
provide a safe, secure, loving and famil y­
oriented home and stri ve to prov ide for
the needs not only of our residents. but
al so our employees."
After serving as a nurse for 10 years in
New Orleans for various hospitals,
Steverson saw the need for an ass isted
Ii ving facility in the Laurel area. The

Garde ns Assi sted Living. The 79-year­
old says Steverson is more than an
admini strator - she is a friend .
"As a business woman , Miss Deborah
is one of the best, but she is also very
loving and kind to each and every resi­
dent here," said Nel son. "Mi ss Deborah
laughs at our jokes, she cries with us
when we are hurting and she'll even
play the piano for our Wednesday church
servi ce. Above all , she 's compassionate
and carin g."
Steverson's work in the Laurel COnuTIU­
nity has gained notice. Her honors
include the 2008 Be~ u s ine s s Bureau
"Business Integrity Award ," the-BBB's
2008 Circle of Honor Award. the
Mississippi Healthcare Association 's
2006 Administrator of the Year, the 2005
Ronald Reagan Award and the National
Republican Congressional Committee's
2003 Leadership Award.

When she has time, Steverson enjoys
hunting and fi shing with husband , Doug,
and playing the piano for her church.

consumers that scam artists, claiming to
represent a federal agency, are telling
them that they have been selected to
receive government grants (often

"The scammers are saying that

identity theft. The first
phase of the 2010 U,S.
Census is under way as
workers have begun ver­
ifying the addresses of
households across the
country, Eventually,
more than 140,000
U.S. Census workers will
count every person in
the United States and
will gather information
about every person living
at each address includ­
ing name, age, gender,
race, and other relevant
data.
The big question is ­
how do you tel! the differ­
ence between a U.S,
Census worker and a
con artist? BBB offers
the following advice:
.. If a U.S. Census
worker knocks on your I
door, they will have a I
badge, a handheld de- ,
vice, a Census Bureau
canvas bag, and a confi­
dentiality notice. Ask to
see their identification
and their badge before
answering their ques­
tions. However, you
should never invite any­
one you don't know into
your home.
•• Census workers are
currently only knocking
on doors to verify ad­
dress information. Do
not give your Social Se­
curity number, credit
card or banking informa­
tion to anyone, even if
they claim they need
it for the U.S. Census.
While the Census Bu­
reau might ask for basic
financial information,
such as a salary range,
the Census Bureau will
not ask for Social Secu­
rity, bank account, or
credit card numbers nor
will employees solicit do­
nations.
Eventually, Census
workers may contact you
by telephone, mail, or in

COUPON TIPS
• Don't divulge personal informa­
tion. You shouldn't need to provide
any personal or banking informa­
tion to access sites publishing
online coupons. Only the store you
are buying from needs this infor­
mation, so be suspicious of any oth­
er site asking for such details.
• Avoid pop-up coupon ads. You
should be getting your online
coupons directly from retailers and
legitimate coupon code site, not
from ads that are popping up to
offer something to you.
• Assume that email coupons
might be fake. Unless you sub­
scribe to a legitimate store or
coupon site's email newsletter, you
should avoid coupons (or claims of
suchl coming to you via email.
When tn doubt, be safe and get your
coupons from a trusted coupon code
site.
• Understand where the coupon,
is coming from. Is it being offered
