1) Consider the process flowchart below to produce methanol (CH3OH) from carbon monoxide (CO) and
hydrogen (H2). Consider also that in the reactor there is a second reaction where CO and H2 react to produce
dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) and water. Complete the mass balance of the process (stream table below). The
recycle ratio is 50, and the
composition of the purge is as indicated in the stream table.

2) (30pts) For the methanol process (not the same compositions or moles of problem #1), the temperature
and the pressure of the condenser are 120C and 40 atm. Assuming ideal solution, complete the stream table.

3) (30 pts) A solution of 5% ethanol in water is mixed with a recycle stream coming from the liquid of the
second of two flash separators. This mixture is fed to the first flash that operates at 96C and 1 atm. The
vapour from the first flash is cooled and fed to the second flash that operates at 86C and 1 atm. The vapour
from the second flash is fed to a total condenser that turns all the vapour into liquid. Draw the process
flowchart, complete the stream table, and determine the maximum temperature of the condenser.

Equations:
For ideal gases (low pressures) the equilibrium constant for reactions is Keq = (yi)i (P/Pref) i
where Pref = 1 bar, and yi is the molar fraction of i, and i is the stoichiometric coefficient for the
component i.
Antoine equation P =Psat = 10^(A-(B/(T+C))), P is in mmHg, and T in Celsius, but keep in mind
that there are other forms of the equation, always be very careful with the units.
% Conversion = (moles consumed/moles fed)*100%
Yield of A to produce B = moles of A consumed to produce B/ total moles of A fed to the process
Selective yield of A to produce B = moles of A consumed to produce B/ total moles of A consumed
Recycle ratio = moles recycled/moles of fresh feed
Single pass conversion of i = moles reacted of i/ moles of i fed to the reactor
Overall conversion i = moles reacted of i/ fresh moles of i fed to the process
Raoults law: xi*Pisat = yi*PT ; Henrys law: Raoults law: xi*Hi = yi*PT
Ideal gas law PV= nRT
R = 0.08314 bar*L/(K*mol) (universal gas constant)
1 atm = 1.01325 bar = 101.325kPa = 760 mmHg = 14.7 psi
