A2 Biology

top 10%
of the country

Year 13 Leavers Summer 2015 really did themselves proud! They worked consistently throughout years 12 and
13 and with great focus, especially in their study periods in the LRC. More than 80% of the A levels taken
exceeded or met the highly aspirational target! This places our students A level results in the top 10% of the
country in terms of achievement.

A2 Further
Maths

top 10%
of the country

A2 Applied Science
top 25%
of the country

A2 Business

top 25%

Year 12 students last year worked just as hard, beating the outgoing year
13s AS Level grades so we are hoping they will achieve just as highly at A2!
Its amazing what positive outcomes can be achieved when you put your
mind to it!

What did our

Students do?

Emily @ Edge Hill

During summer I attended a four day Summer
School/residential at Edge Hill University in
Ormskirk doing Physical Education. This
experience gave me the opportunity to get a
feel for university life and gave me a chance to
see whether the course I wanted to study was
for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the week as well
as the course I was on. By doing practical and
theory lessons I was able to get a sense of how
the course would be delivered and I am now
really looking forward to studying this course, or
one similar to it in the future as I know it is
something I love and something that will benefit
me later in life. I would highly recommend
doing a residential as it is a great way to meet
new people from many parts of the country, it is
highly beneficial and completely free, which
was a huge bonus. During the residential
everyone was so friendly and helpful and I met
some lovely people who I am still in touch with
now and I would definitely do it all again.

During the summer I was fortunate enough to spend a week in

the centre of London with University College, London. This
summer school introduced me to great new theories behind
historical study, this is something that has inspired me to pursue
History at a degree level. I also really enjoyed this because it
allowed me experience life at University. I would thoroughly
recommend Year 12s to look into Summer Schools, they can be a
great addition to your personal statement. You also get to go
away for a week, usually without having to pay for anything. If
any year 12s have questions about applying to summer schools, I
would be happy to help!

Azba Wahid

The Royal Veterinary Colleges summer school provided a real taste of

university life. Staying with other students in self-catered
accommodation on campus gave me the opportunity to be more
independent and speak to people with similar aspirations.
Undergraduates and lecturers advised me on the application process and
explained the Veterinary Science course in more detail. I attended
seminars and practical classes, and went on extensive tours of the small
animal hospital, equine hospital and farm. The most beneficial project
was producing a group poster and presentation on being a vet in different
countries, which developed my communication skills and ability to work
under pressure. Other fun activities included a quiz night, a dodgeball
tournament, a barbeque and an interactive exotic animal session. I
returned home with many new friends and a renewed sense of
determination. Sarah Szczur

Happiness Ethos Day Year 12

The start of the year is always one filled with nerves
and apprehension (and thats just the staff!), so with
Mrs Gannons links with Leeds Trinity University, the
whole of year 12 and their tutors set off on Friday 11 th
September for our HAPPY DAY!
The day was filled with workshops and a fantastic
performance from The Rise Theatre Company, as well
as a tour of the University Campus to see what student
life is really like.
Thanks to Mrs Gannon and the RE staff.

STUDENT

Sarah Szczur
Sarah Szczur is applying for veterinary science to start in
September. This is one of the most competitive courses in the
world; but with four straight A grades and her determination,
were sure shell succeed. Heres her story.

Yr13

When I decided I wanted to be a veterinary surgeon, I had to

accept that the road to success would not be a straight one. So far
that road has taken me on an exhausting journey, veering left and
right, leading me to a variety of places that have provided the
experience I require to reach my destination. Although Ive never
received a penny for the work Ive done, Ive certainly gained new
skills, met incredible people and made wonderful memories.
Early work experience included volunteering weekly for a year at a
wildlife sanctuary for monkeys, reptiles and exotic rodents,
working at a cat rescue centre and assisting at a riding school for
the disabled. Through these encounters I became confident in
animal handling and developed skills in communicating effectively
with people.
My most exciting placement was 2 weeks at a sheep and cattle farm in Scotland during lambing season this year, which was
enthralling and very hands-on. I learnt the signs for impending labour or illness, and delivered lambs, castrated and
vaccinated them and docked their tails. Treating prolapse ewes was particularly interesting, one of whom required Buhner
suturing after a plastic retention device failed to work. Not every task was pleasant, such as skinning dead lambs, so during
my time there I appreciated the value of having a sense of humour, discovered my resilience and understood the
importance of remaining composed under pressure to avoid compromising care.
Working alongside veterinary surgeons and nurses in a small animal hospital for 2 weeks was ey e-opening. Unlike the
unsanitary, imprecise procedures performed on the farm where improvisation was often necessary, the procedures here
were performed meticulously in a totally sterile environment. It was thrilling to witness surgery preparation and comm on
operations, and after a lump removal on a dog, the method used to stitch the incision together with minimal skin was
especially impressive. I paid close attention to the sympathetic yet direct manner in which vets suggested euthanasia to
owners, and I can envisage myself speaking with comparable controlled emotion.
For another 2 weeks I shadowed and assisted large animal vets carrying out pregnancy diagnoses, post -natal examinations,
claw amputations, TB tests and laboratory analysis. I learnt that farm veterinarians must be self-assured in their knowledge
when speaking to clients because farmers are experts in their livestock and will only trust a vet who is evidently proficient . I
was specifically impressed with the speed and focus of the vet while euthanising a cow and I adamantly believe I will be
capable of illustrating similar strength.
I enthusiastically look forward to stepping into the inspiring, dynamic veterinary world. When Im a qualified vet sitting in
my barn conversion with my Siberian Husky, I will know that all the hard work was worth it!

Kundai Gomwe, Year 12

Before I started 6th form, I was very anxious about my subject choices (I'd
heard some horror stories about Chemistry, Physics, English Lit and Maths!).
It seemed like everyone but me knew what they wanted to do as a career
and knew exactly how and where to achieve it. But from the first day, even
though half our year had chosen to pursue other choices, HF6 felt like the
right choice for me. I knew my teachers and they knew me. This made it a lot
easier for me to settle in because not only was I not afraid to ask questions, I
was also surrounded by people who knew the way I worked. Although the
workload is a lot more extensive and the subject matter more difficult, I
really like my subjects. For me, free lessons are invaluable because they're
periods were I know I've got an hour to work with no distractions and my
teachers are available when I need them.

Alex Howarth, Year 12

So far I am enjoying sixth form as I am only studying subjects that
I want to do. I study Maths, Further Maths and Physics. It may
sound very complicated and hard, however, these are subjects I
feel most comfortable doing and I really enjoy it.
I also do buddying and it is a great experience that I would
recommend to all!

The Guardian 3rd October 2015

Year 13 interviewed by National Newspaper

At the end of September eight students in year 13 were
interviewed by a leading journalist from The Guardian about
their perceptions of The Labour Partys new leader Jeremy
Corbyn. The article appeared in The Guardian on Saturday
3rd of October, if you want to see the article ask Caitlin
Arnold for a copy. They also answered questions on their
view of a number of hot topics such as the refugee crisis,
immigration and student loans. The journalist complimented
the sixth from on having such articulate, aware and openminded students. She said they were a real credit to the
sixth form.

Back at Holy Family, the sixth

formers were ambivalent about
the EU but universally in favour of
immigration. I think its good
that we let people from other
countries in. I know a lot of
people criticise them for taking
jobs, but they come here to have
a better life and a lot of the time
they are doing jobs that others
dont want to do, said Caitlin
Arnold, 17. Its our humanitarian
obligation to help refugees, said
Jack Lewis, 17, who thought he
might have voted Conservative in
May if he had been able to.

A Poem for Holy Family Sixth Students

A busy year ahead,
Thats already flying by,
Six weeks gone,
In the blink of an eye.
In the year of Ofsted,
What grade will we be?
Before they arrive,
Preparation is key.
Dates on the calendar are set,
Lots of data collections youll see,
With parents evenings and mocks,
Mixed with some IAG.
Then theres the tutors, who simply are great,
Pushy but supportive, like an annoying mate!
Moreland, Morrell, Myers and me,
Then Mazza, the Queen of the LRC.
Miss Langford, Miss Cybulska, Mr Riley as well,
Dymond with the quiz, finishing before the bell!
Busy assemblies and tutorials with lots of info,
Mr Verfeurth and Mr Atkin, please remember to go!
And then there is Layas,
Who keeps us on track,
The last thing you want,
Is her on your back!
Your subjects will be hard,
Questioning; what, why and how?
Persevere and keep going,
Because your time is now.
Difficult times ahead,
Make no mistake,
Coursework and essays,
Its for your own sake.
Youve all started well,
And remember now its your turn,
To be the best sixth form student,
You need to Live, Love and Learn.
