1. (a) The volume of a rectangular tank open at the top is 4 cubic meters.
If the base of the tank measures x by y meters, show that the tanks
surface area A in square meters is xy + y8 + x8 . Find the dimensions of
the tank for A to be a minimum.

(b) If A, B and C are the angles of a plane triangle, find by using the
method of Lagranges multipliers, the maximum value of the function
f (A, B, C) = sin A sin B sin C.

2. (a) State Gauss theorem.
An electrostatic vector field E is defined throughout a region V bounded
by the closed surface S. An associated scalar potential function is
given by E = grad, where it is assumed that vanishes on the
boundary S. The total energy W of the field is given by
Z

dV,
W =
2 V
where the charge density is determined by the equation divE = 4.
Deduce that
Z

W =
E 2 dV,
8 V
where E = |E|.
(Hint: In this part of the question you may need to use one or more
of the vector identities.)

4. (a) Find the work done by the force F = (yz + 2z)i + xzj + (xy + 2x)k
in moving a particle from the point A(1, 0, 1) to the point B(0, 1, 1)
along a path consisting of two straight line segments AC and CB,
where C is the point (0, 0, 1).
