2. Indicative Assessment Requirements for the Module:

Group Presentation PP Paper, and individual assignment based on


developing strategy for business resilience and sustainability

3. Maximum Word Limit and Assessment weighting for each


aspect within the assessment:
Group Report: 4000 words and 15 Power Point slides ( Task 1
=1000 word report and 5 slides and Task 2= 3000 word report
and 10 slides) (Assessment Weighting 50%)
Individual assessment contribution (an individual set of
supporting documentation from each student equivalent to
3000 words absolute maximum): Assessment Weighting 50%

Group Assignment ( Attempt both tasks)
Group members are required to attempt both tasks below and prepare a
WRITTEN report based on your research and group discussion. Imagine
you have been called upon by the board of directors to deliver an oral
presentation based on your findings in relation to task 2 below. Prepare a
set of power point slides (max 15 slides) that you would use for a 20
minute presentation. Attach your slides to your written report. ( You will not
be required to deliver any oral presentation for assessment purposes but
you need to demonstrate by way of Power Point slides how you would do
this)

Task 1
Using relevant strategic management concepts, conduct an analysis of one of
the following films (motion pictures):

Gandhi, (Dir, Richard Attenborough, 1982)

12 Angry Men ( Dir. Sidney Lumet. Orion-Nova, 1957. Film)


Drawing on relevant models critically discuss the storyline and possible
strategic management lessons that could be drawn from the film. (1000 words
and 5 slides)

Task 2
In your role as strategy consultants, you have been requested by the
board of directors of a company of your choice, in either the hotel or

retail or airline industry, to advise them on the possibility of changing


their strategy in order to open up new national and international
markets.
Using relevant conceptual frameworks that you think fit, prepare a
presentation for the benefit of the board of directors. (Max: 3000 words
and 10 slides)

Group work guidelines


Students are required to fully participate in and contribute to
the development of the Group Report. Non-participation and/or
non-attendance will result in restriction of marks for this aspect
of assessment
The group size will be determined by the module leader and module
teaching team and will normally be in the range of 6-8 group
members (normal maximum). In specific circumstances this may be
varied.

6. Individual Supporting Contributions to Group Presentation


Learning outcome assessed:
Critically analyse a case situation in terms of strategic issues and
make justified recommendations.
Each student is required to provide supporting documentation
within a stipulated allowed maximum of 2000 words from each
student.
The required content of the supporting documentation produced by
each student also is required to be within the following maximum
word lengths (in brackets) and to cover the specific categories
listed:
(a)Provide an executive summary for their personal and individual
research and work undertaken for the topic set-required in
Executive Report standard format: 5%
(b)Indicate and identify the key areas of research and sources which
the student has had to identify and undertake to contribute to the
group
report
and
their
key
sources
of
research/references/literature search sources related to the topic
selected. 5%
(c) A critical discussion of strategic models from the evidence
identified by the individual student related to the topic set 20%
(d) An indication of the individual key conclusions and findings
related to strategic theories and models and the practical
implications in the context of the hotel/retail industry. 10%
(e)Identification of the key issues and conclusions which the student
has learned as a result of undertaking the group assignment on
the topic set and an idenfication of the success or failure of their
group-team endeavours. 5%
(f) An indication of the way in which their individual contribution
impacted on Group Discussion by listing the action points
included in the report 5%
Each student will receive an individual mark for their submission of
their individual supporting contributions and documentation. It is
emphasised that this aspect of the assessment is to be the work of
the individual student and should reflect individual researches;
comprehension of the tasks involved; views; critical awareness; use
of theory; interpretation and judgements; use of evidence; evaluation
and a systematic approach to the use of research
(Max 3000 words 50% weighting)
