Survey results summarized

during board meeting
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

School District of Menomonee Falls residents indicated support for a referendum to

increase the annual operating expenses and
improve facilities while showing less support for a field house addition, according to
a survey conducted for the the district.
The survey was conducted by School
Perceptions in September and October.
Residents were mailed a paper survey,
which included information for those who
preferred to take the survey online. There
was a total of 2,106 responses, with 581
coming in paper format. The margin of
error for the full sample was plus or minus
2.2 percent.
Bill Foster of School
Perceptions told the School Board Oct. 12
that the return rate was approximately 18
percent.
Foster said 90 percent of individuals
responding to the survey were district residents, 83 percent were not district employees, and 53 percent do not have children
attending schools.
According to the survey, 76 percent of
respondents indicated that the district has
a positive impact on their home value.

"I do a lot of surveys and this is probably one of the best (responses) I've ever
seen," Foster told the board.
Respondents were then asked if they
would support specific referendum questions.
According to the survey:
When asked if they would support a
$1.25 million annual operating referendum
to maintain current programs and services
for the next five years, which would have
an impact of $35 for each $100,000 of a
home's value for five years, 48 percent of
all respondents said "definitely yes while
28 percent answered "probably yes."
Among residents who don't have children
in the district, the responses were 33 percent definitely yes and 80 percent probably yes.
Foster said he was "pleasantly surprised" with the satisfaction people had for
the district and for the operating referendum.
"Those are hard things for community
members to wrap their minds around.
People typically support what they can
understand, nobody understands school

Hi, my name is Taco. I'm an incredibly sweet

boy who was transferred from Vilas County
Humane Society due to lack of space. My
family surrendered me to Vilas County
because I would wander off when the kids
forgot to close the gate to the yard. I never meant to run away, my
nose just took me on great adventures! To keep me safe my new
family should keep me on leash, a secure fenced in yard, or on a
leash while I explore the outdoors. I love to be with my people and
crave a good snuggle on my owner's lap. I am very tolerant and
gentle and would do well in a home with children of all ages, other
dogs and even cats. When you come to visit me at the shelter I will

Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsed
laser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2
laser is the most widely studied laser on the
market today with the most University
supported articles outlining their safety and
effectiveness. I can tell you that lasers are
wonderful tools in dentistry if they are used
correctly. The ADA Council on Scientific
Affairs has recently published a position paper
on lasers and how they are used in dentistry.
Some of the salient points of their paper are as
follows:
There are currently more than twenty
cleared indications for use for dental lasers in
the United States.
According to the ADA position paper: The
dental literature indicates that when lasers are
used as an adjunct to meticulous root planing,
mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., the
intentional removal of the epithelial lining of
the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefit
beyond scaling and root planing alone with
respect to gain of the periodontal attachment.
Additional clinical data from properly
designed clinical trials with adequate sample
sizes are still required before it can be known to
what extent LANAP (Laser assisted new
attachment procedures) are safe and effective
across the spectrum of patients with chronic
periodontitis.
So while lasers can be used for removing
lesions, performing frenectemies (removing
tissue that holds tongues or lips down) and
many other soft tissue applications it has not
been found to definitively treat gum disease. If

While summarizing the survey,
Foster said that among people answering "undecided" to a survey, one-third
will vote for a referendum while twothirds will vote no.
"I usually say that undecided is the
way nice people say no," Foster said.

Greco said the board will have a work
session Nov. 16 dealing with board conversation from the survey and a phone
survey that is also being conducted.
The surveys are part of plans by the
district to go to a referendum in the
spring. The full results of the survey
are available at the district Web site,
www.sdmf.k12.wi.us as part of items
discussed at the Oct. 12 School Board
meeting.

Falls School
District OKs
short term
borrowing
The
School
District
of
Menomonee Falls approved issuing
$4.5 million in short term borrowing
Oct. 12 to cover expenses later this
year until tax receipts are received
in January.
Superintendent Patricia Greco
noted that the borrowing is up from
$42.5 million last year but down
from $5.2 million in the 2013-14
school year. She said the increased
borrowing this year is due to a
reduction in state aid and the timing of the state aid.
Favorable budget outcomes over
the last three years have resulted in
higher than anticipated fund balance cash reserves to end the 201415 fiscal year. This coupled with the
shortened borrowing period is projected to reduce the cost of borrowing by more than 60 percent
($15,000) compared with years
past, district staff stated in a summary on the item.
Menomonee Falls will partner
with five other district in the borrowing to generate more interest in
the short-term bonds while securing
a lower interest rate.

Falls Homecoming comeback bid falls short against Hale

BY CATHY KOZLOWICZ
CORRESPONDENT

With the score 21-0 with 9:37 in the second quarter against West Allis Hale (3-5, 3-3 Greater Metro) on
Oct. 9, Menomonee Falls coach Dan Lutz had a reason to panic. Lutz felt he could be in for a painful
night.
Arick Gleissner, who was just moved from the JV
team the week before to replace starting quarterback
Bryce McMurtry (shoulder injury) fumbled on the
first play and threw an interception to begin the
game. Two Menomonee Falls turnovers helped Hales
quarterback Trevor Williamson score on a one-yard
run to give Hale a 7-0 lead with 5:47 in the first quarter.
Gleissner threw an interception which gave Hale a
32-yard run that fueled a 13-yard touchdown pass for
a 14-0 lead. Hale scored with 9:37 left in the half on
a 37-yard touchdown pass to widen their lead to 21-

0. Hale held Menomonee Falls to 59 yards and three

first downs in the first half.
He (Gleissner) calmed down and then played well
(in the second half), Lutz said. Gleissner helped Falls
turn the game around for a suspense thrilling homecoming game.
It was not until 17.6 second left in the third quarter that Falls was on the scoreboard with a 30-yard
pass from Gleissner to wide receiver Mason Janson.
This set up a 3-yard touchdown run by senior running
back Boyd Sanson. Gleissner threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Janson with 8:15 in the final quarter to
bring the score 21-14.
With a deficit in the first half, Gleissner showed
aggressiveness and grit by almost dealing an upset in
the final seconds. Gleissner completed a 30-yard pass
to senior wide receiver Matt Emmer to keep the game
alive. Menomonee Falls drove down to Hales 26-yard
line but Gleissner was sacked. Gleissner tried to for

one last touchdown pass with 2.9 left on the clock.

Menomonee Falls (3-5, 3-3 Greater Metro) will play
conference leader Brookfield Central (6-0) on Oct. 16.
Menomonee Falls needs the win to reach the playoffs.
We will do what we have always done. We will
practice and do reps, Lutz said.
Hamilton tops West Allis Central
Hamilton beat West Allis Central 35-7 Oct. 9, leaving its potential playoff hopes alive.
Hamilton entered halftime with a 14-0 lead following 4-yard run by Sam Herriges and a 16-yard run
by Travis Janus. Hamilton then outscored Central 217 in the second half. Herriges led Hamilton, running
20 times for 239 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, Hamilton improved its record to 33 in the Greater Metro Conference and 3-5 overall.
Hamilton has to win its Oct. 16 game against
Brookfield East to qualify for the playoffs.

Falls firm selected for graffiti
removal project
Ace of Spray has been selected by
Milwaukee Business Improvement
District #21 to provide graffiti removal
services throughout the downtown
business and commercial area.
Ace of Spray will employ green techniques to clean graffiti from surfaces,
usually within 24 hours of its being
reported. Unlike sandblasting or soda
blasting - which can damage buildings
and leave a mess behind - Ace of Spray
partners biodegradable cleaners with
high-pressure water to leave surfaces
clean and graffiti-free.
If a tag is on a painted surface,
Ace of Spray will color-match the existing paint and cover it.
We are thrilled to partner with

Milwaukee Downtown, BID #21, to help

keep its community free of the scourge
of graffiti, and welcoming to workers,
customers and new businesses, said
Kurt Wahlen, Regional President of Ace
of Spray. Ace of Spray takes great pride
in responding quickly to reports of graffiti, which discourages additional taggings, and using cleaning practices that
remove all markings while protecting
buildings and other surfaces.
Spray paint is the most common raw
material in graffiti, Wahlen said, but
different markers, stickers and even
crayons are sometimes used. Ace of
Sprays custom equipment and cleaners,
operated by highly-trained personnel,
wipe them all away.
Buildings are not the sole victims of
taggers, Wahlen added. Mail boxes,
sidewalks, fire escapes, garbage containers and other locales are targeted.
Ace of Spray will even use an aerial lift
to remove graffiti high on walls.
Graffiti is more than a nuisance
it affects an areas quality of life,
Wahlen said. We are proud to help
organizations, such as Milwaukee
Downtown, that recognize the best
response to graffiti is a fast cleanup.
Ace of Spray provides a full range of
power washing and property maintenance services. Besides cleaning parking garages, sidewalks, building facades
and home exteriors, Ace of Sprays
experienced professionals offer parking
lot striping, deck staining and cleanups for festivals and other events. More
information is available by calling (262)
439-8419
or

Community Memorial Hospital

announced a $100,000 donation from
Kohls to expand the emergency department at Froedtert & the Medical College
of Wisconsin (MCW) Community
Memorial Hospital. The donation will
specifically support one of four specialized trauma rooms used for the most
critically ill or injured patients with
life-threatening emergencies. Each
trauma room is designed to accommodate a larger team of care providers and
specialized medical equipment providing stabilization, diagnosis and treatment quickly and effectively.
We are thankful and humbled by
the generous donation from Kohls,
said Dennis Pollard, president of
Community Memorial Hospital and chief
operating officer of Froedtert Health.
The donation demonstrates Kohls
commitment to the community through
this investment in premier emergency
care. Community Memorial Hospital is
privileged to have the support of such a
great community neighbor.
Kohls donation to Community

Memorial Foundation is in response to a

$3 million capital campaign, Our
Community Promise: Securing Premier
Emergency Care Close to Home, to
expand and renovate Community
Memorial Hospitals emergency department. The emergency department,
designed 30 years ago to serve 14,000
patients, is currently serving more than
22,000 patients annually. The multiphase construction project is scheduled
to be completed by summer of 2016.
Froedtert & MCW Community
Memorial Hospital, founded in 1964 by
the citizens of Menomonee Falls and
surrounding communities, is a fullservice hospital that specializes in cancer care, heart and vascular care,
orthopaedics, womens health and
advanced
surgical
procedures.
Community Memorial Hospital is part of
the Froedtert & MCW health care network, which also includes Froedtert
Hospital, Milwaukee; St Josephs
Hospital, West Bend; and more than 25
primary and specialty care health centers and clinics.
