Discussion

The HallowScream Committee met earlier in the week to brainstorm ideas. Spaghetti Dinner
and HallowScream is set to take place on October 16th. The Spaghetti Dinner is available from
3:15-6:00 with a dine-in/carry-out option. HallowScream will take place from 5:00-7:00 with
games, hay rides, goody bags, pumpkin races, face painting, pumpkin decorating and lots more!
o We are still needing more volunteers to help out. If you would like to help out with a
shift, please contact nancyhankspto@gmail.com or Amanda Bell @ 812-827-9477
Box Top Update: All box tops from last year have been sorted and will be sent off for
reimbursement by November 1st. We are collecting Box Tops again this school year and families
are encouraged to continue sending Box Tops in. We will be having a grade level box top
contests again this school year. The first contest deadline is December 10th and the winning
grade level will have a glow stick dance party before Christmas break. The PTO also assigned
one parent to each grade level and those parents will be responsible for gathering/counting the
box tops.
Angie Scherer provided an update on the balance report. The PTO has a current budget of
$24,859.53 (with $20,000 of the total budget for the playground equipment). Presented Jodi
Schmitt with $100.00 checks for each teacher/staff member and $1,000 for the library.
Discussed T-shirt drawing competition which will be coming up soon! Will be distributing forms
to students for the drawing contest and also will need to get shirt sizes for each student. PTO
will provide a free T-shirt to all students at Nancy Hanks.
Other fundraising options were mentioned:
o Coke: http://www.mycokerewards.com/content/causes.html
Give back by donating your points to Nancy Hanks; Coke converts those points
to cash, allowing Nancy Hanks to spend it on physical education, new
technology, and art supplies.
o Target: http://www.target.com/redcard/benefits-target-rewards
Select Nancy Hanks Elementary and Target will donate up to 1% of your REDcard
purchases at Target stores and at Target.com.
Ashley Becher shared information about prices for Nancy Hanks Attire through All Stars Sports.
Going to get samples of clothing to display/show parents. This will be a great way to show
school spirit!

Discussed the upcoming Christmas Parade in Santa Claus on December 10th. Decided that we
would like to participate as a school by entering a float and are considering a possible Super
Hero theme.

Meeting adjourned @ 5:29.

Next meeting: November 12th @ 4:00 p.m. Open to anyone who would like to attend.
A great way to learn more about Nancy Hanks Elementary, get connected with parents and get involved
in the process is to volunteer. Parent groups play an important role in building a supportive school
environment where both teachers and students can do their best work. What the PTO does: Support
fundraising activities for the school (ex: Race for Ed, Spaghetti Dinner, Box Tops), assist in field trip costs,
coordinate fun activities for students (ex: HallowScream, Field Day, T-shirts) and support teachers/staff!
Want to be more involved, but dont know how: Please contact us either via email or Facebook.

Understanding the Lunch Line: A Parents Guide

Each day, your child is offered a
lunch containing the following:

Meat or Meat Alternate,

Grain,
Fruit, Vegetable
and of course, Milk!

While the most nutritious lunch

contains all of these options, we
understand that sometimes our
students do not like some of the
items we serve. To make our
student customers happy, we like
to give them the option to decline
items they do not want to eat.

Out of the 5 food groups your student is offered, he must choose at

least 3 food groups for his meal. One of the food groups must be a fruit
or vegetable. Some of the menu choices may count as two food groups
such as pizza, nachos, cheeseburger, or chef salad!
Heres an example menu:
Cheeseburger on a Bun
1/2 cup Carrots
1/2 cup French Fries
1/2 cup Peaches
8oz of Milk

So, your child could choose:

Cheeseburger on a Bun and Fries
Carrots, Peaches and Milk
Cheeseburger on Bun, Peaches and Milk
Of course they can take other
combinations or all 5 food groups!
The choice is up to them!

If your child comes home and says she didnt get enough to eat at lunch, ask if
she is taking all of her fruit and vegetable choices!
Dont forget about breakfast! Join us
each morning, breakfast is a great way
to kick off your childs day!

Breakfast choices are a little different.

Students must take at least 3 of the
offered items at breakfast, one must be
a fruit or vegetable.
