1. Executive Summary
1.1
Dynamic Rotation test carried out on 7 Single seal sleeve with 5 7/8 DP and 7 TJ by varying well bore pressure
between 500 psi to 1500psi. Drill pipe rotation speed was varying between 50 to 200 rpm, and the closing
pressure was adjusted to maintain a seal with a specified leak rate of 4 Lt/min and the test was carried out for
a total period of 89.5 Hrs. as shown in Figure 9.
The visual inspection of the Seal Sleeves after 89.5 hours of the dynamic rotation test shows that there is a
negligible amount of wear on the upper and lower regions of Sleeve as shown in Figure 11 and Figure 12.
3D Laser scanning of the Seal Sleeve after the Dynamic Rotation test was shown in Figure 14 confirms the
critical wearing regions. Comparison of the results shows that the top region wears more compared with the
bottom region.
1.2
Stripping test:
Stripping test carried out on the 7 Single seal sleeve with the 5-7/8 drill pipe and 7 tool joint with a wellbore
pressure of 750 psi for about 1409 cycles and a wellbore pressure of 1000 psi for 1086 cycles. Condition of the
seal sleeve after the test was shown in Figure 18 and the 3D Laser scanning results of the Seal Sleeve was
shown in Figure 20. Polymer seal wears out to a magnitude of 24.3 mm at the Top region at the end of 2495
cycles due to the 35 degree taper side of the Tool joint pushing hard against the polymer material during upward
stroke of the stripping test.

Introduction
Two sets of tests were completed on the 7 Seal sleeve (1082-0201-REV A) to determine the sleeve
performance with specified lubrication leak rate across the sealing interface. The objectives were to establish
the baseline operational performance characteristics using a 5 7/8 drill pipe with a 7 tool joint under varying
rotational speeds and well bore pressures.
Test #1 Dynamic Rotation test of the 5 7/8 DP and 7 TJ through the sleeve with a well bore pressure varying
between 500 psi to 1500psi. RPM was increased in increments from 50 to 200 rpm, and the closing pressure
applied on the piston varied to maintain a seal with a specified leak rate.
Test #2 Stripping test of the 7 tool joint with a wellbore pressure of 750 to 1000 psi with the specified leak
rate.
3.
The following sequence was maintained for conducting the lubricated dynamic rotation test on the single sleeve:
a.
Test unit was arranged with 7 Seal Sleeve fixed onto test stump as shown in Figure 3. Refer to
drawing No. 1092-1200.
b.
Secured top flange on top of test unit body with eight (8) studs.
c.
Connect water lines to test unit, hydraulic lines to element packer unit, and quick connect lines to
outlet ports on top flange.
d.
5 7/8 drill pipe and 7 TJ was inserted into test body and through the seal sleeve as shown in Figure
2.
e.
Filled test unit with water until above the packer element.
f.
Closing pressure was applied to the packer element to seal against the wellbore pressure of 500 psi
to maintain a leak rate of not more than 4 l/min. The leak rate was controlled by the flow meters
through the simulated SIC on the top flange ports.
g.
h.
Continued to rotate the DP at 50 RPMs along with the stripping stroke speed of 100 mm/sec(Upstroke
and down stroke) to insert the DP and Tool joint to the sealing region for one hour until all temperature
of water flowing has stabilized.
i.
After one hour (or temperature stabilization) all data was recorded in Table 1Table 1: Closing of the
Seal Sleeve against the 5 7/8" DP & 7" TJ at Differential Rotational Speed & Wellbore Pressure.
j.
Steps h-I were repeated for different rotational speed of the drill pipes (100,150,200 rpm) for a 500 psi
wellbore pressure.
k.
Steps f-J were repeated for different wellbore pressure of 750 psi, 1000 psi, 1250 psi and 1500 psi.

Upon completion of Dynamic rotation test, the sleeve was removed for inspection. The degree of wear on both
the PTFE and polyurethane components was measured.
Figure 10 shows the outside of sleeve immediately after completion of the Dynamic rotation test. The sleeve is
permanently deformed and bowed inwards. This is attributed to the loss of material on the inside of the sleeve.
The outer profile did not really change after time.
The indentations towards the top of the seal are from the annular fingers. It would appear from these marks that
the sleeve did not rotate during the dynamic rotation testing.
Figure 11 shows the Inner region of the sleeve after the Dynamic rotation test. Zoomed view of the inner surface
in Figure 12 shows the PTFE sealing region during the Rotation test.
3D Laser scanning of the Seal Sleeve after the Dynamic Rotation test was carried out to compare with the actual
model to evaluate the critical wearing regions. Sectional view of the comparison model was shown in the Figure
14.Comparison of the results shows that the Outside of the sleeve compressed radially inwards to a maximum
of 9.5 mm at the upper regions due to the finger effects and the inner side of the sleeve extrudes to the bore of
about 4 mm at the bottom region and 1.5 mm at the Top region. These figures show that the wearing of the seal
sleeve occurs more at the top region compared to the bottom during the Dynamic Rotation test.

This test determines the ability for the Seal sleeve to maintain wellbore pressure while handling the stripping of
5-7/8 drill pipe and 7 tool joints.
The following sequence was followed for conducting the Stripping test on the single seal sleeve:
a.
Test unit was arranged with 7 Seal Sleeve fixed onto test stump. Refer to drawing No. 1092-1200.
b.
Secured top flange on top of test unit body with eight (8) studs.
c.
Connect water lines to test unit, hydraulic lines to element packer unit, and quick connect lines to
outlet ports on top flange.
d.
5 7/8 drill pipe and 7 tool joint was inserted into test body and through the seal sleeve.
e.
Filled test unit with water until above the packer element.
f.
Continued to flow water out of the top flange by engaging the seal sleeve with the applied pressure
load on the packer element.
g.
Closing pressure was applied to the packer element to regulate the leak rate of not more than 4 l/min.
Monitored through the flow meters in the simulated SIC on the top flange ports.
h.
Test unit was pressurized between 750psi to 1000 psi to simulate wellbore pressure.
i.
j.
Stripping test was carried out with the stripping speed of 1 ft/sec for 1000 cycles by maintaining the
specified leak rate.
