Question 2 What is the comparison of the voltages between the lines in a single
(5 marks)
phase circuit and a three phase circuit taken from the same three
phase supply?
What is the comparison of the currents in the neutral in the single
phase circuit and a three phase circuit connected to a three phase

factor. What is the active power consumption in a purely inductive circuit?
Your
Answer

Apparent Power: (unit volt-amperes VA)

Apparent power is the voltage on an AC System multiplied by all the current
that flows in it. It is the vector sum of the active and reactive power.
Active Power: (watts W)
This is also called real or true power, where it is the power drawn by the
electrical resistance of the system when work is done.
Reactive Power (vaolt-amperes reactive Q)
It is the power stored in the sytems such as inductive motors, transformers,

etc.
Power factor:
It is the ratio of the real/ true or Active power that is used to do the work and
the apparent power that is supplied to the circuit.
In a pure inductive circuit the active power consumption is zero.

Question 6 Two inductors each of value 100mH are connected in parallel and this
(5 marks)
combination is connected in series with another inductor of value 250mH.
What is the total inductance of the circuit? The circuit is connected to an AC
voltage source. What is the phase relationship between the voltage and
current in the circuit?
Your
Answer

2 X 100 mH Inductors in parallel

= 0.05H

Total Inductance = .05 + .25 = .3H

When inductors are involved in an AC circuit the current and the voltage do
not peak at the same time. The phase difference is less than or equal to 90

Question 7 Two resistors are in series. One is 230 ohm, and the other is 670 ohm. If a
(5 marks)
potential difference of 18 V DC is measured across the 230 Ohm resistor,
what is the power dissipation in the total circuit?
Your
Answer

Current I = I1 = I2 (In Series)

V1 = I x R1
V2 = I x R2
18 = I x 230
I = 18/230 = 0.07A
Power desipation PT = I2R1 + I2R2 = 0.072 x 230 + 0.072 x 670 = 1.127 + 3.28
= 4.41 Watts.

(5 marks)
the peak value of the voltage? The voltage is applied to a resistance of 100

Peak value = RMS value x Peak factor

Peak value for a sinusoidal is 1.414
Peak value = 240 x 1.414 = 339.4 V
Current I = V/R = 339.4 / 100 = 3.3394 A
