ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Philip Arundell considers himself an amateur business man,

sportsman and artist. Educated in England and Ireland, he has
spent some of his life in the Far East.
This simple philosophy came out at a watershed in his life,
and hopefully will prove to be a useful guide to life for a lot of
people, especially the young.
The title is derived from an Irish song called Phil The Fluters
Ball - about a flute playing Irishman who made sure everybody
had a good time at his party. In a light hearted way, Ive made
my version Phil The Fluters Philosophy, or Game of Life.

DEDICATION
This simple book is dedicated to the whole of Nature, where
we all came from, and where, with luck, we all will continue to
live and play our games.

BOYS AND GIRLS,

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN
This is a very simple book.
It describes in my own way, what we humans are, where we
came from and why we act the way we do.
And as, like most of you, I am a total amateur on this subject, I
am sure you will all have a lot of fun tearing my pet ideas apart
or possibly agreeing with them.
One of the most important points that recurs throughout is
the importance of the individual, because everything in the
end, such as governments, great industries and your own back
yard are determined by how you, the individual, acts. And your
actions depend on your manners.
It is very easy in this modern world, with governments
interfering in every part of our lives, with hugely intrusive media
and advertising, and with fast moving scientific advancement,
for us all to look outwards. What Im suggesting is that it may
be better for us all to spend a little time looking inwards in
search of better individual manners.
A little story reflecting this idea was told to me on a painting
holiday by Michael Two Feathers Ray, a native American,
who spends a lot of his time keeping alive American Indian
folklore.

Here it is :
The gift of the seventh direction;
The old ones say that in the beginning there was only darkness
and spirits moving in the darkness. The great spirit looked out
over the nothingness and decided to make something.
So on the first day Wankan Tonka made the East.
On the second day he made the South and the third day he
made the West.
Next he made the North so now there was something.
The fifth day was used to make the heavens, the sun, the
moon and all the stars.
On the sixth day Wankan Tonka made the earth with all the
mountains and rivers, all of the seas and animals, flowers
and birds. All these things were the whole dream of Wankan
Tonka. Six directions East, South, West and North with sky
above and earth below and so it was and is.
The seventh day came and the great spirit made human
beings and he wanted to give the people a gift, a spirit made
out of all the six directions, a seventh direction. He knew that
he could not just give this gift to the people for they would not
appreciate or know its true value. So he decided to hide this
gift so that people must go and search for it.
Wankan Tonka called all the animal people to help him decide
where to hide this gift. First came the great buffalo -

Give to me this gift, I will hide it far out on the plains and
there under a wallow I will bury this gift. Human beings will
never find it there, the buffalo said.
Wankan Tonka smiled sadly. No, this will not do, there will
come a time when all of the land has been turned over by iron
ploughs, they will find it there. So buffalo went away.
Next came the Bear. Give me this gift and I will go past the
plains all the way to the highest mountain and there deep in
a cave I will hide this gift, the people will never find it there.
Again Wankan Tonka smiled sadly. No, this will not do, one
day men will have a fever for a yellow metal and they will dig
through all the mountains looking for this metal and they wIll
find this gift. So too Bear went away.
Then came the Eagle. Give me this gift. I know where to hide
it. I will take it and fly past the plains and over the mountain.
I will fly all the way to the moon and hide this gift there. The
people will never find it.
Once more Wantan Tonka smiled sadly. No, it will not do, a
time will come when men will land another eagle on the moon
and leave their footprints there, they would find this gift.
So it went all day, animals coming with places to hide the gift
but each time there was a reason they would not work. Just
as the sun was setting there came a small animal. It had taken
him all day to get there. For it was a mole and moles must
travel under ground. Now some say that mole is blind but it is
not so. His eyes are just turned around so he sees inside. Mole

said to Wankan Tonka I know where to hide this gift where

humans will never find it.
Now Wankan Tonka smiled proudly. Yes, where would you
hide this great gift?
Put it in their hearts said mole. The world you have made is
so wonderful and beautiful that people will spend all their time
looking out over it and will never look inside.
And so it is to this day, that the greatest gift that the creator
has made for each of us takes a journey that is so hard, so
dangerous that most human being will not under take it and
yet it is the shortest journey in the world.
It is the journey from your head to your heart.
In my view that is a very pertinent message being handed
down to us by Native American Folklore.
Now if you carry on youll find another version of how we
humans come to be.
With luck, you might find this little book will bring out the
better side of you.
