4. Example 8, Shilds p. 64
Determine the diameter of the drive shaft for a chain conveyor which has the loading parameters illustrated
in Fig. 3.40. A roller chain sprocket of 500 mm pitch diameter, weighing 90 kg, will be mid-mounted between
two bearings. A 400 mm, 125 kg roller chain sprocket will be mounted overhung. The drive shaft is to be
manufactured using cold-drawn 070M20 steel. Operating temperatures are not expected to exceed 65C and
the operating environment is non-corrosive. The shaft is to be designed for non-limited life of greater than
108 cycles, with a 90 per cent survival rate. The shaft will carry a steady driving torque of 1600N-m and
rotate at 36rpm. A sled runner keyway will be used for the overhung pulley and a profile keyway for the midmounted pulley.
5. Example 5
Figure shows a simply supported shaft arrangement. A solid shaft of 50mm diameter made of low-carbon
steel is used. The following are given: x1=750 mm, x2=1000 mm, FA=350N. (E=210.000 MPa)
Find: Determine the first critical speed by using the Dunkerley method.

7. Example Flywheels
The output, or load torque, of a flywheel used in a punch press for each revolution of the shaft is 12Nm from
0 to and from 3/2 to 2 and 144 Nm from to 3/2. The coefficient of fluctuation is 0.05 about an
average speed of 600 rpm. Assume that the flywheel's solid disk is made of low-carbon steel of constant
25.4 mm thickness.
Determine the following:
(a)
The average load or output torque, (b) The locations max and min, (c) The energy required
