"Many women have to work because they live on their own. A woman in a one-parent family may

Many wives work in order to

increase the family income. Others work because they find it dull to work at home all day. Women have
provided at least 30% of Britain's labour force since 1900.
A woman may give up work when her children are born and stay at home to look after them until
they are old enough to go to school. Then she may decide that she wants to work again. But she may not
be able to return to the work she did before her children were born. Different skills may now be needed.
Or her former work may not fit in with the school hours and holidays of her children. She may need
re-training or a totally new kind of job. There are some opportunities for her - but not
nearly enough." (H.F. Brookes and C.E. Fraenkel, Life in Modern Britain)
