Portacel supplies gas and liquid vacuum dosing systems for potable & waste-water
disinfection. Portacel equipment is in use world wide, from the smallest rural pumping
station to some of the largest water treatment works in the world.
The company was created in 1952 and is now a part of ITT Sanitaire Ltd, making Portacel
part of one of the world's largest water and waste-water treatment equipment specialists.
The Portacel UK manufacturing facility and head office is based in Winchester, Hampshire
(UK). The Portacel USA office is located in Houston, Texas.

Vacuum Gas Dosing Systems

Portacel have developed a reliable range of vacuum gas dosing equipment for chlorine, sulphur dioxide,
ammonia and carbon dioxide. Portacel Dosers are modular, simple to use and inexpensive to operate.
Clyde - 50g/hr - 80kg/hr
This cost-effective manual gas doser is easy to
operate and is available in wall, cylinder or drum
mounted types. The Clyde is commonly used for
chlorination of low volume rural water supplies.

Thames - 50g/hr - 250kg/hr

The Thames doser range is the widest currently available, with dosers
suitable for small automated works up to the largest municipal treatment
plants.
At 250 kg/hr, the Thames is the worlds' largest automatic gas doser.
The Thames is available in both manual and automatic versions using the
AVP2 for precise process control.

Liquid Dosing Systems

Portacel has developed a unique vacuum dosing system that utilises proven technology to accurately meter sodium
hypochlorite, sodium bisulphite, aqueous ammonia or aluminium sulphate solutions. This system eliminates the
hazards associated with conventional pumped systems.
! No gas locking when using Sodium Hypochlorite.
! No hazardous liquid leaks or pipe bursts.
! Liquid vacuum regulators eliminate unwanted gravity forced dosing at low flows and ensure a constant
chemical flow regardless of liquid pressure in the tank.

Liquid Trent - 25 - 3,000 l/hr
The Liquid Trent is available in both automatic
and manual versions and is primarily used for
disinfection of large municipal water supplies.
Process controllers can each accept two residual
chlorine signals, giving very accurate control.

Residual Chlorine Analysers

The Medway 2 analyser is designed for continuous measurement
of either free or total chlorine residual. Dual or triple validation
versions are available.

Low sample flow rate - 0.2 l/min.
Self-cleaning amperometric measuring cell.
Optional buffer system for pH stabilisation.

Evaporators
Evaporators are used on large water treatment plants to obtain high gas
flow rates from liquid chemical sources. Versions are available for chlorine,
sulphur dioxide and ammonia. The Portacel evaporator uses a unique
schedule 80 helical steel coil, which is submerged in a heated water bath.
! High gas flows can be produced from a single chemical drum (up to 230
kg/hr Cl2).
! The unique Portacel coil allows easy visual inspection, even while the
system is running.
! Any contamination from the liquid source passes right through the coil
and is arrested on an external filter - the inside of the coil never requires
cleaning. Maintenance downtime is minimised.
! The coil is completely submerged thereby preventing corrosion.
! Water (rather than oil) bath eliminates any explosion risk.
! No complicated recycle pumps.

Changeover Systems
Two systems are available for switching from empty to full gas cylinders (or tonne containers). The Cherwell V is a
simple, cost-effective vacuum changeover device that requires no power supply and is suitable for maximum gas
flows of 12 kg/hr. The Cherwell PV is a fully automated vacuum changeover valve with control panel, suitable for
gas flows up to 80 kg/hr. The control panel can be interfaced with site SCADA systems and gives full indication of
gas supply status. Importantly, both systems carry out supply changeover under vacuum. This allows pressurised
gas pipe work to be kept to a minimum, thereby reducing the risk of a gas leak.

Auxiliary Dosing Equipment

Portacel manufacture a complete range of venturi type ejectors and vacuum regulators to complement our gas and
liquid dosing products.
! Ejector sizes - 1", 1.5", 2", 3" & 4" (sizes cover all gas & liquid chemical flows).
! Vacuum regulators - An essential safety device in a gas dosing system, the regulator converts gas under
pressure to gas flowing in a vacuum.
! 12, 60 and 250 kg/hr variants available for gas dosing.
! 100 l/hr and 500 l/hr variants available for liquid dosing.
! Gas header systems & ancillaries - Portacel supply welded, Schedule 80 steel headers for the connection of
multiple gas cylinders or drums. A range of auxiliary valves, flexible connectors, liquid traps and heaters are also
available.

Colne Gas Detection Systems

Portacel supply a range of gas detection instruments suitable for the rapid and accurate detection of chlorine,
sulphur dioxide and ammonia leaks.
Colne systems are available in several configurations, from single channel units for small remote sites to multi channel
systems suitable for the largest gas store. Sensors can be added or removed for added flexibility.
The Colne Compact chlorine gas detector (single or dual channel only) is a high specification, low-cost analyser
specifically designed for use in the water industry. The Compact is available with a programmable self-test facility,
which uses a gas generator to pass chlorine across the sensor head(s). If, after a pre-set time, the detector has not
sensed chlorine in excess of the lower alarm level, a fault alarm is raised.
