1. A mast AB supported by a spherical socket at A and guy wires BC and BD carries


a vertical load P at B as shown. Point B is 0.3 m vertically below the xy plane.
Find the axial force induced in each of the three members of this system.

2. (a) Explain the principles of operation of a screw-jack with a neat sketch.


(b) Outside diameter of a square threaded spindle of a screw Jack is 40mm. The
screw pitch is 10mm. If the coefficient of friction between the screw and the
nut is 0.15, neglecting friction between the nut and collar, determine
i. Force required to be applied at the screw to raise a load of 2000N
ii. The efficiency of screw jack
iii. Force required to be applied at pitch radius to lower the same load of
2000N and
iv. Efficiency while lowering the load
v. What should be the pitch for the maximum efficiency of the screw and
what should be the value of the maximum efficiency.

3. An open belt running over two pulleys 240 mm and 600mm diameters connects
two parallel shafts 3000mm apart and transmits 4KW from the smaller pulley that
rotates at 300 r.p.m. Coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.3
and the safe working tension is 10 N/mm width.
Determine :

(a) Minimum width of the belt.

(b) Initial belt tension and
(c) Length of the belt required.
4. (a) State and prove pappus theorem.
(b) Find the moment of inertia about the centroidal horizontal and vertical axis
for the given shaded quadrant .
{As shown in the Figure2}

5. (a) Prove that the mass moment of inertia of a right circular cone of base radius
R and height h, with respect to a diameter of the base is M(3R2 + 2h2 )/20
where M is the mass of the cone.
(b) Calculate the mass moment of inertia of a circular cone of base radius 300mm
and height 600mm about a line which passes through the mass centre of the
cone and which is parallel to the base of the cone. The mass density of the
cone is 2500 kg/m3 [8+8]
6. (a) A railway car is moving with a velocity of 20m/s. The diameter of the wheel
is 1m. The wheel is running on a straight rail without slipping. Find the
velocity of the point on the circumference at 600 in the clockwise direction
from the top at any instant.
(b) A 600mm diameter flywheel is brought uniformly from rest to a speed of
350rpm in 20 seconds. Determine the velocity and acceleration of a point on
the rim 2 seconds after starting from rest. [8+8]
7. If Wa :Wb :Wc is in the ratio of 3:2:1 , find the accelerations of the blocks A, B, and
C. Assume that the pulleys are weightless.

8. A centrifugal pump rotating at 400 rpm is driven by an elastic motor at 1200 rpm
through a single stage reduction gearing. The moments of inertia of the pump
impeller ad the motor re 1500 kg.m2 and 450 kg.m2 respectively. The lengths of
the pump shaft and the motor shaft are 500 and 200mm, and their diameters are
100 and 50 mm respectively. Neglecting the inertia of the gears, find the frequency
of torsional oscillations of the system. G = 85 GN/m2 .

1. A bar AB hinged to the foundation at A and supported by a strut CD is subjected


to a horizontal 50 kN load at B, as shown in Figure1. Determine the nature and
magnitude of the force in the strut and also the reaction at A.

2. (a) Two blocks having weights W1 and W2 are connected by a string and rest on
horizontal planes as shown in figure2. If the angle of friction for each block is
φ, find the magnitude and direction of the least force ‘P’ applied to the upper
block that will induce sliding.

(b) A 10.000N block is raised by forcing a wedge under it as shown in figure3.


Determine the minimum value of the force ‘P’ which must be applied to the
wedge. µ = 0.3 at all surfaces of contact.

3. (a) Distinguish between open and crossed belt drives.

(b) A belt weighing 1000kg/m3 has a maximum permissible stress of 2.5N/mm2


Determine the maximum power that can be transmitted by a belt of 200mm×
12mm if the ratio of the tight side to slack side tension is 2.
4. (a) Define the terms centroid, moment of inertia and radius of gyration.
(b) Compute moment of inertia of hemisphere about its diametral base of radius
‘R’.
5. (a) Show that the moment of inertia of a homogenous triangular plate of weight
W with respect to its base of width b is W b2 /6g where g is the acceleration
due to gravity.
(b) A right circular cone has the radius of base as 200mm and height 500mm.
The mass density of the cone is 7800 kg/m3 . Find out the mass moment of
inertia of this cone about a line which passes through the vertex of the cone
and which is parallel to the base of the cone.
6. (a) An airplane is flying horizontally with a velocity of 450 km/hr at an altitude
of 1960 m towards a target on the ground which is to be bombed. Estimate
where the bomb must be released in order to hit the target and the time of
travel of the bomb. What is the velocity with which the bomb will hit the
target?. Also find the angle made by the line of sight of the pilot when the
bomb is released.
(b) The acceleration of a particle is defined by the relation a =kt-4. Knowing that
v=4m/s when t=2sec and v= 1m/s when t=1 sec, determine the constant ‘k’.
Write the equations of motion when x=0 at t=3secs.
7. (a) An automobile moving with a uniform velocity of 40Kmph is accelerated by
increasing the traction force by 20%. If the resistance to motion is constant,
find the distance traveled before it acquires 50Kmph.Use work-energy method.
(b) A solid cylinder and a sphere are started top of an inclined plane, at the same
time, and both roll without slipping down the plane. If, when the sphere
reaches the bottom of incline, the cylinder is 12m, what is the total length ’S’
of the incline?
8. The weight of an empty railway wagon is 240KN. On loading it with goods weighing
320KN, its springs get compressed by 80mm.

(a) calculate its natural period of vibration when
i. empty and
ii. loaded as above.
(b) It is set into natural vibrations with amplitude of 100mm,when empty. Cal-
culate the velocity when its displacement is 40mm from statical equilibrium
position.

1. (a) Define free body diagram, Transmissibility of a force and resultant of a force.
(b) Two identical rollers, each of weight 100 N, are supported by an inclined plane
and a vertical wall as shown in Figure1. Assuming smooth surfaces, find the
reactions induced at the points of support A, B and C.

2. (a) Explain the principles of operation of a screw-jack with a neat sketch.

3. A leather belt is required to transmit 9kW from a pulley 1200 mm in diameter


running at 200 r.p.m The angle embraced is 1650 and the coefficient of friction
between leather belt and pulley is 0.3. If the safe working stress for the leather
belt is 1.4N/mm2 the weight of leather is 1000Kg/m3 and the thickness of the
belt is 10mm, determine the width of the belt taking the centrifugal tension in to
account.

4. (a) State and prove pappus theorem.

(b) Find the moment of inertia about the centroidal horizontal and vertical axis
for the given shaded quadrant .

5. A flywheel consist of a 1m diameter plate 100mm thick with four holes. Each
200mm in diameter cut at a pitch circle diameter of 400mm symmetrically. Com-
pute the mass moments of inertia of the flywheel about the axis of rotation. The
material of the flywheel is cast iron with specific gravity 7.5.

6. Cycle is travelling along a straight road with a velocity of 10m/s. Determine the
velocity of point A on the front wheel as shown in (figure3) Radius of cycle wheel
= 0.4m and distance of A from C=0.2m.

7. (a) A homogeneous solid cylinder of weight 100 N whose axis is horizontal rotates
about its axis, in frictionless bearings under the action of the weight of a 10N
block which is carried by a rope wrapped around the cylinder. What will be
angular velocity of cylinder two seconds after the motion starts? Assume the
diameter of cylinder as 100cm.
(b) A block of mass 5Kg resting on a 300 inclined plane is released. The block after
travelling a distance of 0.5m along the inclined plane hits a spring of stiffness

15N/cm. Find the maximum compression of spring. Assume coefficient of
friction between the block and the inclined plane is 0.2.

8. A gun is so designed that on firing, the barrel recoils against a spring. A dashpot,
at the end of the recoil, allows the barrel to come back to its initial position within
the minimum time without any oscillation. A gun barrel has a mass of 500kg and
a recoil spring of 300 N/mm. The barrel recoils 1m on firing. Determine

(a) the initial recoil velocity of the gun barrel and


(b) the critical damping coefficient of the dashpot engaged at the end of the recoil
strike.

1. (a) A ball of weight W rests upon a smooth horizontal plane and has attached
to its center two strings AB and AC which pass over frictionless pulleys at
B and C and carry loads P and Q, respectively, as shown in Figure1. If the
string AB is horizontal, find the angle α that the string AC makes with the
horizontal when the ball is in a position of equilibrium. Also find the pressure
R between the ball and the plane.

(b) Determine the forces S1 and S2 induced in the bars AC and BC in Figure2.
due to the action of the horizontal applied load at C. The bars are hinged
together at C and to the foundation at A and B.

2. (a) A solid right circular cone of attitude h= 305 mm and reduces of base r =
75 mm has its center of gravity ‘C’ on its geometric axis at the distance h4
above the base. This cone rests on an inclined plane AB, which makes an
angle of 300 with the horizontal and for which the coefficient of friction is µ
= 0.5. A horizontal force ‘P’ is applied to the Vertex ‘O’ of the cone of the
figure3 as shown. Find the maximum and minimum values of P consistent
with equilibrium of the cone. If the weight W = 405 N.

(b) What must be the angle α between the plane faces of a steel wedge used for
splitting logs if there is to be no danger of the wedge slipping out after each
blow of the sledge?

3. A belt transmits 15 kW from a pulley of 900mm diameter running at 300r.p.m.


The angle of lap is 1600 and coefficient of friction is 0.25, thickness of the belt is
6mm and its density is 1000kg/m3. Determine minimum width of the belt required
if stress in belt is limited to 2 N/mm2

4. (a) State and prove parallel axis theorem.


(b) Find the centroid of the shaded lamina shown Figure4.

5. Derive the expression for the moment of inertia of a cylinder length ‘l’, radius ‘r’ and
density ‘w’ about longitudinal centroidal axis and about the centroidal transverse
axis.
