Large area

pushes up
kharif sowing
Gargi Parsai
NEW DELHI: The area under
kharif crop is higher this
season than in the previous
year by 13.51 lakh hectares
owing to higher sowing of
pulses, coarse cereals and
oilseeds commodities
whose prices are up in retail
markets.
Kharif crops have been
planted on 1,031.37 lakh hectares this year as against
1,017.86 lakh hectares last
year. However, while the area under rice and sugarcane
is broadly the same as last
year, cotton sowing has
dipped by 10.14 lakh hectares, pointing to the crisis
from the non-payment of
cane dues to farmers.
The overall sowing has
improved, despite a 14-per
cent deficit in rainfall during
the southwest monsoon that
withdrew last week.
The cultivation of pulses
went up after the government announced a higher
minimum support price for
the kharif marketing season.
Till October 1, 114.58 lakh
hectares of pulses had been
sown, as against 102.56 lakh
hectares in the corresponding period during 2014-15.
Higher sowing was reported
from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Area under arhar, urad and
moongbean is higher than
others.
The sowing of coarse cereals is higher by 4.72 lakh
hectares with cultivation in
jowar (sorghum), bajra
(pearl millet) and maize better than last year.
As for oilseeds, the higher
sowing of soybean and sesamum improved the overall
cultivation by 6.4 lakh hectares over last year. However, there has not been much
improvement in rice cultivation. Cotton planting has
dipped to 116.41 lakh hectares this year.

GLOBAL ECONOMY
WEAK U.S. JOBS DATA FURTHER CLOUDED THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC PICTURE, AND POINTED
TO A MUCH-ANTICIPATED RATE HIKE FROM THE FEDERAL RESERVE BEING DELAYED FURTHER.
lanked by interest rate decisions in Britain, Japan and Australia, the IMFs annual meeting in Lima takes centre stage
in the calendar next week, with policymakers focusing on Chinas economic
slide and its impact on the rest of the
world.
Activity in Chinas vast factory sector
shrank again in September fuelling fears
that the economy there may be cooling
more rapidly than thought just a few
months ago, with a reverberating impact
on emerging and developed economies.
Meanwhile, unexpectedly weak U.S.
jobs data out on Friday further clouded
the global economic picture, and pointed
to a much-anticipated rate hike from the
Federal Reserve being delayed further.
Equity markets worldwide have been
falling with Wall Street just recording its
worst quarter since 2011, so IMF delegates, primarily central bank governors
and nance ministers from around the
globe, will seek reassurances from China
that it can smooth, if not halt, its slide.
Driven by fears of a sharp slowdown,
they may delay the structural adjustments in the coming two years and use
the old normal approach to support the
economy, that is, rely on credit expansion and public investment, Nordea
economist Amy Yuan Zhuang said.
Despite the nancial market turmoil,
we still see a soft landing as the most
plausible scenario in the coming two
years, she added.

meeting, due on Thursday, will give a
strong signal of whether a hike, the rst
in nearly a decade, could still come this
year.
The U.S. stands out for its relatively
low exposure to the foreign sector,
Credit Suisse said.
Not only is direct domestic consumption and investment low, but even within investment, the amount done to
support export capacity is likely much
lower than the other economies, given
the U.S.s low export share.
Still, some analysts said the minutes
could be less hawkish than recent commentary from top officials like Fed Chair
Janet Yellen or New York Fed President
William Dudley, who had said the U.S.
was on track to raise rates this year.

However, the Ethiopian was

Nikkins pass to Uthappa

India continued to put pressure and maintained good ball
possession, keeping the opponents defence busy all through.
But with no further goals

Indias favour.
Indians started the second
quarter on a high. But unfortunately for the Indians they
could not nd the nets, leaving

The third quarter saw Indians scoring yet again as the second goal was added to the tally.
Right into the quarter it was

goal. He scored in the 34th minute to provide India a 2-0 lead.
The last quarter saw New

Georgia
CARDIFF: Julian Savea scored a
hat-trick of tries but New Zealands rugby superstars took a
battering before they overcame
Georgia to become the rst nation into the rugby World Cup
quarternals.
The 43-10 result did not reect the struggle by the All
Blacks in the Millennium Stadium where the biggest cheer went
to Georgias tough tackling hero
Mamuka Gorgodze as he was
named Man-of-the-Match. Captain Richie McCaw and coach
Steve Hansen both admitted that
it was not a great night for the
team seeking to become the rst
to win back-to-back World Cups.
But both said there was no reason to panic.
Georgia physically matched
the world champions, forcing
them into elementary errors.
Starting their top available
side against a Georgia team resting many of their best players,
the All Blacks were expected to
win comfortably. But they were
only 22-10 up at half-time before
adding three tries in the second
half.
They were rattled by a Georgia
team that used bone-jarring
tackles and their powerful forward pack to shake the All
Blacks.
With his rst touch of the ball
in his comeback game after a leg
fracture in his maiden Test three
months ago, Waisake Naholo
sped 55 metres through the Georgian defence to touch down after just 80 seconds.
Any thoughts of a runaway
win were quickly erased. Naholo
lost the ball with his second
touch and Georgia full back Beka
Tsuklauri cashed in on their
turnover luck, touching down
under the posts. Neither side
could believe it.
Lasha Malaguradze levelled
the scores with the conversion
and landed a 49-metre penalty to
keep Georgia in touch at 12-10
after Savea had scored the All
Blacks second try.
The early pace of the game appeared to be telling on Georgia
and the defence cover was no

again.
From a long build up they
eventually cracked the Georgian
defence with Brodie Retallick

The Georgians faded in he

Dutch sand sculptors turn childhood fantasy into reality with a pop-up
sandcastle hotel, an ephemeral work of art and luxury stay
OSS, NETHERLANDS: Dutch sand
sculptors have taken a childhood fantasy to a new level by
creating the worlds rst reallife sandcastle hotel, complete with a drawbridge and
turrets.
Curious tourists and the
young at heart ocked this
summer to the small southern Dutch city of Oss to spend
a night in a specially built
room deep inside the massive
sculpture made entirely of
sand.
Constructed from tonnes
of sand trucked in especially
for the purpose and reinforced with wood, the room
gives those spending the
night the unique experience
of sleeping in a real-life sandcastle, and comes complete
with sand-carved sculptures.
Its crazy, said Dutch mechanic Erwin after sleeping
in the sand hotel to celebrate
his 12-and-a-half year anniversary with his partner.
I wanted to do something
special and its a bit of a childhood dream of mine to sleep
in a sandcastle, Erwin, who
declined to give his surname,
said.
The idea came from the
ice hotels in Finland and
Sweden, says hotel manager
Maud van Leeuwen, referring to the popular Scandinavian resorts that spring up in
winter, featuring ice beds and
room
temperatures
of
around minus-eight degrees
Celsius.

Emotional adventure
I think for some people
its a childhood fantasy to

for others its a bit like going
on an adventure, or for a special occasion, she said.
The sand hotels are expected to be back at same two
venues next year and will
perhaps also make an appearance in Germany and Britain.

y Bitmoji looks
exactly like me,
only adorable.
Same short
black hair. Same sprinkling of
freckles. And same buttondown and tie combo, an Annie Hall affectation I picked
up while covering Congress,
for reasons that remain
unclear.
For the uninitiated (or for
those over 14 years old), Bitmoji is basically a personalised emoticon, designed by
you, to look like a more delightful, caricatured version
of your actual self.
After choosing everything
from face shape and eye colour to hairstyle and outt,
you can place your avatar into
a range of posesThen, let the

Bitmoji, which has won
converts like Lena Dunham,
Seth Rogen and Victoria
Beckham, is the brainchild of
Jacob Blackstock, a 39-yearold Canadian who started as a
cartoonist and animator and
goes by the nickname Ba. The
app was introduced in the
iTunes store and in Google
Play last October, and its earlier incarnation was called
Bitstrips.
The true brilliance of Bitmoji, I think, we often reduce
the world around us (ourselves, our friends, our coworkers) into digestible, cartoonish caricatures: the lanky
political ack with the wry
smile; the awkward best

the balding colleague with a
bit of facial scruff that says, I
may be 42, but I party like Im
24. And now Bitmoji has
done the heavy lifting for us,
marrying our own sense of
self with our public image, yet
in a safe, quirky way that we
ultimately control.
Shahan Panthi, Bitmojis
co-founder says, The app is
all about emotion, and its
you, and youre expressing all
these emotions, Mr. Panth
said.
When I asked why Bitmoji
offers skin tones that dont
exist in real life like re

seemed to cut to the core of
the Bitmoji experience.
These avatars are like
your id, and that can take any

about letting you be the embodiment of your essential
form, that doesnt necessarily
have to be literal. The essential form of you could be a
