SPEED AND VOLUME COUNTS ON A STRETCH OF 200M


ALONG UHURU HIGHWAY
Objective
To gather data of traffic flow on a stretch of Uhuru Highway between the University Way roundabout and the
Kenyatta avenue roundabout for the speed surveys and the volume counts. The length under consideration is
200m

Introduction.
Traffic studies entail the collection and analysis of road data so as to establish flow patterns which can be
used to examine a transportation system. As a sub branch of traffic engineering, it describes the relationship
among various measurable characteristics of road traffic flow such as

Speed
Flow rate and volume
Density and concentration of traffic

Transportation studies serve to quantify the extent of a transportation problem or to provide an analysis of a
proposed transportation solution

Speed
Speed is the rate of movement of traffic or various components of traffic and is usually expressed in K.P.H
(kilometers per hour). Some of the terms associated with speed are;

Speed (v) =

The inverse of speed (1/speed) is usually referred to as the rate of flow


Other forms of speed include

Spot speed- instantaneous speed of a vehicle at a specified location


Journey speed- effective speed of a vehicle between two points
Space mean speed- average of speed measurements at an instant of time over space.
Time mean speed- average speed measurements at one point I space over a period of time.
Space headway or Headway (h) - is a measure of the temporal space between two vehicles,
measured in seconds.

Flow rate and volume


Describes the number of vehicles (per unit time) passing in a section of a road network. It is usually expressed
in vehicles per hour. On the other hand, volume (also referred to as volume count) describes the number of
vehicles counted in a specified interval. Volume counts can be analyzed at various levels;

Average daily traffic (ADT)

Peak hourly volumes- volumes collected during rush hours (peak hours) on busy urban roads. It gives
an indication of maximum hourly flow
Design hourly volume (DHV) the hourly traffic volume expected to use a certain road in the design

Density (concentration of traffic)


Refers to the number of vehicles per unit distance occupying a section of roadway at a given instance of time.
It is expressed in vehicles per kilometer.

Green shields macroscopic stream model


Macroscopic stream models represent how the behavior of one parameter of traffic flow changes with
respect to another. Most important among them is the relation between speed and density.
The first and most simple relation between them is proposed by Green shield. Green shield assumed a linear
speed-density relationship as illustrated in figure 3:1 to derive the model. The equation for this relationship is
shown below.

Data collection
The methodology of speed measurement was by taking the time each vehicle took within the 200m for the
Uhuru Highway section, however, due to the large number of vehicles and limited personnel our speed study
was limited to white cars only. The flow was determined by the use of counting materials where only
motorized traffic was counted.

Methodology
Volume count
This was done in for roughly 15 minutes on the uhuru highway for the period between 11.00 am and 1.00
pm. All vehicles were tallied for each of the three lanes and recorded on the data sheets.

Speed survey
This was done by recording the entry and exit times of vehicles on the selected section. The difference
between the two gave the time taken for a vehicle to travel between the two points. The vehicles registration
numbers were used.

The above obtained values vary from the design values of 2000 vph and a speed of 80 kph. This can be
attributed to the fact that the section considered wasnt an ideal one in the sense that traffic flow is between
two roundabouts for which the flow is controlled manually by a police officer.
The interpretation of the data collected indicates that the curve so obtained relating speed and flow is
parabolic. This is true for linear relationship between speed and concentration. The curve should start from
zero since the speed is zero when the flow is zero. At maximum speed, V max, the flow again is zero and this
represents the free flow conditions. For intermediate value of speed, the volume will vary widely and the
maximum is reached which corresponds to the capacity of road.
From the graph the expression Q=QM (VO V), the expression which is parabolic is confirmed.
Speed surveys and traffic volume counts are useful in the following areas:

Speed enables the regulation and control of traffic operation by provision of safe speed limit and
speed zoning.
Traffic signals design requires speed data.
For geometric design of roadways.
For analyzing cause of accidents and identifying the relationships between speed and accident.
For determining problem of congestion on roads and relating capacity with speeds.

Traffic counts data is useful in the following areas:

Programming for maintenance needs of a highway.


Evaluation of the financial viability of toll financed roads.

From the study therefore, data collected was of limited use largely because it was short term and mostly due
to large volume of vehicles using the section, sampling was done only for vehicle speeds. This makes the data
collected lack concrete representation of the problem at hand. However with continuous counts, the
seasonal variations of traffic flow could as well have been determined together with their capacities.
Some of the sources of error in this exercise include

Perfect synchronizing of the stopwatches was practically impossible


Incoordination between the various groups while collecting the data

CONCLUSION
We were able to obtain the relationship between speed and volume count. It was also established that the
maximum flow =

ROUNDABOUT DESIGN
SCOPE
Carryout vehicular flow at the junction between Westlands- Kileleshwa road and Riverside road and design a
suitable Roundabout that can accommodate the volume.

Introduction
Modern roundabouts are near circular intersections at grade. They are an effective intersection with fewer
conflict points and lower speeds and they provide for easier decision making than conventional intersections.
They also require less maintenance than traffic signals.
Roundabout design is an iterative process. A well designed roundabout achieves a balance of safety and
efficiency. Good design is the process of creating the smooth curvature, channelization and deflection
required to achieve consistent speeds, well-marked lane paths and appropriate sight distance.
It follows that as a thumb rule for good highway design different combinations should be tested in order to
check the performance characteristics of each option and the best option determined.
The basic most step of roundabout design is the determination of volume of traffic incident on it together
with the various turning, merging and conflicting movements involved for which the basis of design will be
the flow estimate for some point in the future.

Principles of good design


As a thumb rule, for good the intersection to operate well under the prevailing traffic conditions, the
following principles may help the designer to achieve this objective.

The number of intersections should the intersections should be kept to a minimum If necessary,
some minor roads may be connected with each other before joining a major road.
The geometric layout should be selected that hazardous movements by drivers are eliminated. This
can be done by various techniques such as channelizing and staggering.
The design should permit the driver to discern quickly either from the layout or from the traffic signs
the path he should follow and the actions of merging and diverging. This can be achieved by a good
layout, traffic islands, signs and carriageway markings. Good visibility improves safety.
The layout should follow the natural vehicle paths. Smoothness in contrast to abrupt and sharp
corners, should guide minor streams of traffic into stopping or slowing down positions.
The number of conflict points should be minimized by separating some of the many cutting, merging
or diverging movements.
Vehicles that are forced to wait in order to cross traffic stream should be provided with adequate
space at the junction.

Methodology
The traffic flow pattern at the junction was traced and traffic volume count carried out 15 minutes being
taken for each of the flows.
Each of the 15 minute volumes was then blown into hourly volume.

DESIGNING A ROUNDABOUT
After completing the capacity analysis, the geometric design of the roundabout usually follows. The
roundabout shape is one of the most important decision a designer makes, because the shape can affect
design elements that affect safety performance and operation of the roundabout. The desirable shape of a
roundabout is usually circular, but an elliptical, racetrack or teardrop shape can be used depending on the
actual conditions on the ground
Ideal alignment offers an entry design that provides deflection, speed control and reasonable view angles to
drivers while balancing property impacts and costs. While most intersections are at 900 angles and most
through movements are straight, deflection contributes to the safety performance of a roundabout.
Deflection is primarily achieved by placing a central island and supporting it with splitter islands on both
entries to the roundabout
There are 3 choices for attaching the entry legs to the circulatory roadway

The offset left alignment constraints the entry , slowing vehicles and opens up the exit for efficient
degrees

The offset right tends to allow faster entry and constraints the exit
The symmetrical alignment is acceptable for slower speeds

In this case a circular roundabout with symmetrical alignment was chosen

Conclusion
The junction has been found to be sufficient and the above proposed design can be adopted
