In some communities, people

do not know their police officers.
The Haddonfield Police Department decided to have a day to narrow that divide between the police and their community.
The department will be hosting
Haddonfield Police and Community Day on Saturday, Oct. 31 from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Borough
Hall Lot, 242 Kings Highway East.
The event was created as a thank
you to the community as well as
an opportunity for the community to get to know the local officers.
It is an opportunity for the police department to give back to
the community that we serve
Its a great way to say thank you,
come out and meet us, and have a
fun day on us, Corp. Danielle
Mueller of the Haddonfield Police
Department said.
The event was put together by
Mueller and officer Briana Catts.
It was started for a few reasons,
according to Mueller, the first as a
thank you to the residents,
business owners, borough administrators and to the community as
a whole.
We have a great group of residents and business district owners who are very supportive of

the police. We just want to say

thank you for all of the hard
work and all they do for us,
Mueller said.
Another reason was to help
shed some light on the job of a police officer. There has been a lot of
news around the country putting
officers in a negative light, according to Mueller. She hopes
through this everyone will realize
police officers are people too, and
they are here to serve the community in a positive way.
The last reason was to create
connections so people would feel
more inclined to have communications with the Haddonfield Police Department.
Were here for you. We can
help in a lot of matters, and we
want to do our job. This gives us
an opportunity for us to make
those connections with the community, Mueller said.
Haddonfield Police and Community Day will begin with Coffee With A Cop starting at 10 a.m.,
allowing the community to stop
in, have some coffee and breakfast treats from Jersey Java & Tea
with the officers and talk about
their ideas, concerns and questions.

On Oct. 9, a female responded

side bike rack. The incident occurred on Oct. 8 sometime between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The bicycle was described as a womens
cruiser style Schwinn road runner, purple in color, and no serial

neighbors alike.
Its a time for fun, a time for laughter, a time for adorable pictures, a time
for candy, a time for celebration and a
time when we all need to pay attention
to safety.
First and foremost, motorists need
to be extra cautious when driving
through the streets that day, not just in
your own neighborhood, but surrounding ones, as well. Make sure to
be aware of trick-or-treating hours,
and be especially careful when darkness settles in. Be especially alert in

Coachs 100th win marks high point for HMHS football

In 14 seasons, head coach Frank DeLano has brought Haddonfield back to football glory

On Oct. 9, Haddonfield football head
coach Frank DeLano recorded his 100th career win, as the Bulldawgs shut out Woodbury, 35-0.
Following the game, the Haddonfield
community honored DeLano for his
achievement. However, DeLano doesnt see
the milestone as an individual accomplishment.
Individual recognition is a direct result
of team success and this is no different,
DeLano said.
DeLanos milestone was a proud moment for Haddonfield football. The program has enjoyed lots of success during
DeLanos tenure, winning three South Jersey Group II championships in the past five

seasons.
When DeLano was hired as head coach
in 2002, winning was not a regular occurrence for the Bulldawgs. The team had only
made two playoff appearances and won
one playoff game in the previous 15 years.
The school had won 12 South Jersey championships, but all of them came in the preplayoff era. Its last championship season
had been in 1970.
DeLano, only 25 years old when he was
hired, had been an assistant at Haddonfield
for the past four years and had a plan to
change the programs culture.
It was a challenge, he said. As a competitor, I always love challenges.
To turn the team into the consistent winner it is today, DeLano knew hed need the
involvement of the entire Haddonfield football community. This went from the Had-

donfield athletic department and coaching

staff all the way down to the Haddonfield
Youth Football program, where DeLano
worked with the programs coaches to
plant the seeds for the high school program.
I feel like theres so much continuity
from the youth program to high school,
DeLano said. Our coaches will spend time
with the youth program, and theyll come
sit and watch us.
DeLano got the youth program working
on similar schemes, plays and drills the
high school team used to have the players
mentally prepared to play for the Bulldawgs.
Success did not happen overnight for
Haddonfield. The team won 14 games in

Road Race Nov. 14
The 34th running of the Haddonfield 5k Road Race will be on
Saturday morning, Nov. 14 and is
sponsored by the Haddonfield Ys
Mens Service Club. The race,
over a challenging and certified
course, is run through the streets
of the borough and will start at 9
a.m. The race will start and finish
at the Crows Woods Field House.
Entry fee for this years race remains at $20 if received before
Nov. 1 and $25 after that date.

Residents of Haddonfield will
be able to vote for the local school
board.
For Haddonfield School Board,
three seats are open and five individuals are running.
The only incumbent board
member running is Susan Kutner.
Kutner originally joined the board
in 2015 to fill the unexpired term
for Andrew Berlin and was chosen
by the board for the open seat.
The new candidates, Joshua
Drew, Joseph Evangelisti, Glenn
R. George and Adam M. Sangillo

will also be running. Maureen

Eyles, joining the board in 2012,

BOE hopes for March referendum

The bond referendum would bring building improvements, repairs

The Long Range Planning
Committee gave an update on
where it is with the bond referendum at the Haddonfield Public
Schools Board of Education meeting on Thursday, Oct. 22.
The board did not approve nor
present anything with the bond
referendum. It was announced
that the board would be looking
into having a March referendum
rather than the previously proposed January referendum. The
committee is still looking at numbers and trying to create a more
sellable bond referendum ballot, according to Board President
Glenn Moramarco.
We are running out of ways to
reduce it because there are things
to be done that need to be done.
Frankly, we dont have the documentation ready to move forward
in January, Moramarco said.
The committee is continuing to
work together as are the architects and the experts.
The district is going out for a
bond referendum due to much-

needed building exterior repairs,

HVAC updates, special systems
upgrades and accessibility and
code compliance issues.
The previously proposed bond
referendum given at the Oct. 1
meeting had a total estimated cost
of $51.2 million and would be broken into three questions.
Since that meeting, a lot of new
information has come in and a lot
of changes have been made. The
Long Range Planning Committee
decided to hold off on the January referendum date and figure
out a better way to go out of for
the bond referendum.
At the Oct. 8 meeting, the Long

Range Planning Committee was

looking into having the high
school cafeteria demolished and
completely rebuilt from scratch,
as it might be cheaper than doing
renovations. The committee came
back with confirmation that it
would be cheaper and there is a
very high possibility of the state
reimbursing the district as long
as it keeps the same footprint and
foundation. The estimated savings would be about $1.5 to $2 million, according to Moramarco.

Every day, dogs
and
cats
are
brought to the
Camden
County
Animal Shelter in
Gloucester Township where they
wait to be adopted.
In order to meet the
growing need for
space, the Camden
County Freeholder Board undertook a $1.5 million expansion of
the Camden County Animal
Shelter to better serve the needs
of residents and their new pets.
The improvements to the Camden County Animal Shelter include a new adoption wing that
serves as the public side of the
animal shelter. The expanded facility has a dedicated area where
residents can interact and adopt
pets. The adoption center has
glass-walled acquaintance rooms
instead of a traditional shelter
setting with animals in cages, to
encourage shorter shelter stays
for adoptable animals. There is
now room for an additional 30
dogs and 50 cats.
The Animal Adoption Center
also provides educational programming on the humane treatment of animals for school
children and adults. They teach
pet-owners of the importance of
licensing and micro-chipping
their pets.
Camden County is a very animal
friendly place. According to the
last census, 70 percent of Camden County households include
either a dog or a cat. The Freeholder Board has made a commitment to treat homeless
animals in a humane manner because we believe it is the right
thing to do.
In addition, we recently passed
Normans Law prohibiting pet
stores operating in Camden
County from selling animals

puppy mills. Normans law also encourages
the
adoption of pets
from local shelters.
Many
families
looking to provide
a loving home for a
dog or cat have no
idea where the pet they purchased came from. Their good intensions keep this cruel industry
in business, so we want to help
pet owners make more informed
decisions.
Puppy mill dogs and cats spend
much of their lives in small
cages and female dogs are bred as
frequently as possible. Camden
County is joining a growing list
of governmental entities across
the country cracking down on
the sale of pets from these disreputable breeders.

County Animal Shelter. The happiness that one gets from being

They first met in the parlor of
the Langdon home in Elmira, N.Y.
Twain, the dissolute journalist,
was courting and soon succeeded
in marrying Olivia Langdon.
Twain went from smitten to civilized in very short order, civilized
by his association to Olivia, her
family and friends.
For some time and well prior to
this meeting, the Langdon family
was staunchly abolitionist, abolitionist at a time when the Fugitive Slave Act made this a remarkably courageous stand. They had
opened their home to countless
runaway slaves and it was an active way station on the Under-

ground Railroad.
Having solved this mystery, we
return to Mark and Fred. It is a
small literary invention to have
Douglass visit his friend Twain
backstage as Twain is flogging
his new book The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn.
In a minor forgivable fiction,
the play has Twain inviting Douglass to join him on stage to lecture.
The rest is, as they say, history.
And what a history!
It is history with humor and insight rather than just dry facts
and dates.
Through this device we witness the entwined history of
Abraham Lincoln, U.S. Grant,
Harriet Beecher Stow, Douglass
and Twain.

failed to win a playoff game.
However, things began to turn
in 2006, when Haddonfield got
into the South Jersey Group II
playoffs as a No. 7 seed and
stunned No. 2 seed Deptford in
the first round, 20-17.
At that point, thats where
things really took off, DeLano
said. Kids have to have a sense of
purpose. Weve had successful
seasons in there, but never that
playoff win.
The Bulldawgs returned to the
playoffs in 2008. In 2009, they
reached the South Jersey Group
II championship game, losing to
Delsea. Haddonfield would get
over the hump and win its first
championship in 40 years the
next season, beating West Deptford for the South Jersey Group II
championship.
Now, Haddonfield football is a
perennial contender in the Colonial Conference. The Bulldawgs
clinched an eighth straight winning season with a win over Lindenwold on Oct. 16. The team sits
near the top of power points in
South Jersey Group II and will
have a chance at a third straight
championship later this fall.
DeLano noted participation in
the youth program has also increased dramatically from when
he took over in 2002. He doesnt
want to take credit for the
changes, instead giving that to
dozens of coaches, parents, volunteers and players.
The goal is to become a Bulldawg and to play under the lights
on Friday night, DeLano said.
Its become an event on Friday
nights.
DeLano also shares the milestone with the rest of his coaching staff, many of whom have
been with him through most of
his tenure.
The focus should never be
about me, DeLano said. I have a
tremendous coaching staff. Weve
been together for a long time. Im
proud to share the sidelines with
my best friends.
When talking about 100 wins,
the focus always shifts back to the

helped build us up to those 100
wins, DeLano said. Its just
been overwhelming. Its been
humbling to see how many lives
this has impacted.

cheaper, Moramarco said.
Also at the Oct. 8 meeting, it
was announce that HPS was
using the services of a price estimator to see whether some of the
figures the district has for the referendum can be verified. The
company came back with a couple of estimates higher than what
the architects originally gave the
schools.
We are trying to reconcile
those figures and see which ones
are more reliable that we can go

with, Moramarco said.

One of the things that came in
higher than anticipated was the
communication systems in regard to telephone, security and
intercom systems. However, the
school has the possibility of
using the state contractor, RFP
Solutions, at a cost under its original estimates.
The advantage to the board is
that we are allowed to use the
state contract pricing and not
have to tie it up for a bid, which
means we can eliminate the general contractor from getting a
mark up on it, as well as any of
the other trades that would have
to be involvedThe board does
not have to go out to bid for that,
they can use the proceeds from

the bond for utilizing the state

contract, Business Administrator Christopher Oberg said.
As for the ballot itself, the Long
Range Planning Committee is trying to figure out ways to get down
the total cost or spread out the
bonds to be paid over time, rather
than all at once. It is thinking of
keeping one question with the
much-needed projects and then
creating multiple questions with
different projects. However, there
is no decision as of yet.
(The set up of the ballot) is
giving more control to the public
to decide how much burden they
are willing to take on in addition
to the critical parts, which is the
first questions, board member
David Siedell said.
Due to all of these changes, the
board has decided to go for a
March referendum. However, decisions will have to be made by
the end of November, according
to board member Susan Kutner.

The Communication Committee met with groups that will be
helping with the communications
side of the referendum. The committee interviewed Laura Bishop
Communications, which recommended an overall communication strategy, rather than just a
referendum one. The committee
would like to do this and will continue talks, including having a
unified communication strategy
for all schools.
The next BOE meeting will be
on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the high
school library.

Photos can be taken with police, fire and ambulance vehicles
that will be on site for the day.
There will also be some tips given
from the police on identity theft,
fraud prevention, Halloween safety and more.
The day will continue with
other scheduled events such as a
karate demonstration by Garaguso Classical Martial Arts at 1
p.m., a K9 demonstration from
the Cherry Hill Police Department and basket raffle winners
announced at 2 p.m.

sponsorships from the community, borough and business district.
This is going to be an incredible day and everything is absolutely free, Mueller said. Come and

Mary Stockum Perry of Haddon Township and Haddonfield

passed away on Oct. 25 at the age
of 85. She raised seven children:
Richard,
Michael,
Timmy
(Kathy), Patti, Susan Weng
(Larry), Nicole, and Chelsea; was
the loving Gram to Zachary and
Benjamin; and great-grandmother to Malaya. She is also survived
by furry companion, Gabby.
She was a graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School and
worked as the office manager for
Camden County Technical School
for more than 20 years. Always
looking on the bright side of
things and thinking nothing was
impossible, she was the perfect
mother for dreamers. She loved
being a mother and even more so
a grandmother. She was a fountain of youth until her last day,
laughing and joking and planning
for the future. Her children will
always remember her faith in
them, which they will carry with
them for the rest of their lives.
Her grandchildren will always remember how she loved to play
and supported them in anything
they did. Her greatest joy came
from children and they gravitated
toward her, knowing they had
found a place to be themselves.
And she was as strong as she was
kind, overcoming adversity and
working three jobs to provide for
her family, teaching her children
the value of hard work and the
power of belief in better things to
come. Her faith in God and miracles at times seemed impractical,
until you witnessed the answers
to her prayers, things you thought
were impossible. And she is now
in that place she knew existed all
along, and when her children and
grandchildren and family and
friends see her again, when it is
their time, she will greet them
with a smile and say, See? I told
you all along.
Marys family received friends
on Sunday, Oct. 18 at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services in Haddonfield. All were invited to her services on Monday, Oct. 19 at Grace
Episcopal Church. Interment was
private. In lieu of flowers, Marys

Ascension Lutheran Church. Additionally, Esther was a member
of Wedgewood Swim Club, loved
to travel with Bud to new places,
and enjoyed watching the
Phillies. She had a courageous,
kind and gentle spirit and will be
missed by all who knew her.
