SpeakingatatechnologyconferenceorganisedbyTheWallStreetJournalinLagunaBeach,Calif.,
Cooksaidthatanadditional8.5millionpeopleareparticipatinginafreetrialoftheAppleMusic
service.Thatgivesitmorethan15millionusersintotal,whichCookdescribedasasuccessfuldebut.
Imreallyhappyaboutit,andIthink
therunwayhereisreallygood,Cook
said.
ReleasedinJune,AppleMusicisthe
companysattempttocarryits
dominanceofdigitalmusicthroughits
iTunesstoreintotheeraofmusic
streamingpioneeredbySpotifyand
others.Appleisallowinguserstotest
itsservicewitha90dayfreetrial,
whichelapsedforthefirstusers
earlierthismonth.
AnalystshavepredictedthatApples
servicewillfindastrongfollowingduetothevastinstalledbaseofiTunesusers,butfewthinkthe
iPhonemakerwilleclipseothermusicstreamingcompanies.Spotify,theindustryleader,hasmore
than20millionpaidsubscribersworldwide,thecompanyhastoldReuters.
InawiderangingconversationwithGerardBaker,editorinchiefofTheWallStreetJournal,Cookalso
touchedonAppleTV,whichrecentlyreceivedalongawaitedupdate.Anewversionofthesettopbox
featuringappsandexpandedsearchfeatureswillbereleasedlaterthismonth,buttheproductdoes
notincludeastreamingTVservice,whichindustryexecutivessaythecompanyisexploring.
Althoughtelevisionhasbeenslowtochange,Cookexpressedoptimismthattheindustrywilleventually
embracehisvisionofappsforTV.
