EUROTEL shows the way in hotel industry’s ‘greening’
EUROTEL, one of the country’s lead-
ing standard hotels, starts 2010 with
more than the usual promotional ac-
tivities expected of a hotel chain.
Through the Office of the Managing
Director, William Go, the hotel is re-
inforcing its commitment to the envi-
ronment – with the forthcoming open-
ing of its branch in Baguio City sec-
ond quarter of this year.
Eurotel’s strong commitment will
integrate systems and policies to be
more environmentally-friendly in its
operations.
“EUROTEL recognizes how its op-
erations impact the environment, par-
ticularly where use of water, electric-
ity, and detergents are concerned, and
therefore strives hard to incorporate
environmentally-friendly principles
and practices in its operations,” Go
emphasized.
Go said that, “We were all humbled
by Ondoy, and then later, Pepeng. We
need to seriously do something about
how we all contribute to environmen-
tal damages. Somehow, in some ways,
we need to do something now before
it becomes too late. The floods are just
nature’s reminders that we have been
abusing our stay here on Earth al-
ready. We have to work together now,
and the hotel industry should be there
at the forefront.”
While EUROTEL is beginning to
make its environment and social de-
velopment commitment felt by its
people through their small activities
in areas where they operate, Go feels
that they still have a long way to go.
“We have been conducting tree plant-
ing activities and crafts-making semi-
nars in Baguio City and we hope to
do more. However, we know those are
not enough. They are good starts but
eventually, we know we have to do
more.”
In the pipeline is a plan to harvest
rainwater for their operations in the
Baguio City branch, which they plan
to open to the public this second quar-
ter of 2010. The system, if eventually
incorporated in the design of the build-
ing, will harvest rainwater and stored
in tanks that will be connected to the
hotel’s toilet flush systems. The rain-
water will also be used for cleaning
and plant-watering purposes.
Go said that this is a concrete step
in the right direction, given that there
is already a water shortage problem
in Baguio City. “Admittedly, Baguio
City has to do more about the fragile
watershed system. As our way to help
the city and its people, we want to
lessen our demands on the water sys-
tem by creating our own source and
at the same time, investing our money
and other resources wisely. After all,
rainwater is free! There is ‘green eco-
nomics’ there and we hope that this
practice will inspire other hotels as
well.”
EUROTEL wants to ensure that
their “business growth goes hand in
hand with environmental principles
and social awareness and partici-
pation.” They believe that the hotel
has an important role as well in help-
ing push for a strong Philippine
economy through the tourism indus-
try. “The economy is facing tremen-
dous challenges. We in the hotel in-
dustry should be more aggressive,
innovative, creative and more envi-
ronmentally-sensitive. Gone are the
days of sacrificing the environment
just because we want to be No. 1.

newest branch of ISCOM (Isko Moreno
Computer Learning Center) on Leveriza

The new computer center is the eighth
