Erie County Legislator, 11th district

Democrat

1. I am seeking re-election to the 11th district, which I have been honored to

represent since 1997, in order to continue Erie County’s fiscal recovery
while preserving quality of life services.

2. I am again seeking endorsement to show support from Stonewall

Democrats and symbolize my commitment to diversity and respect for
individual rights. If I were to earn it, as I have in the past, it would add to
the many groups who endorse my 2007 re-election bid.

3. Top Issues:
a. Working to Continue County Fiscal Recovery
- I led efforts in many areas, including sponsoring laws on
Early Release of the Budget, requiring monthly budget
monitoring reports, Charter reforms, and reducing levels of
borrowing, and practices such as tracking the four-year
plan, establishing policies within the legislature, and
instituting mid-year budget hearings.
- I will continue to ensure compliance and provide leadership
in this area to ensure continued fiscal stability.

b. Advancing Regional jobs and Economic Development

- I am a member of the Erie County Industrial Development
Agency (on Policy Committee) and the Buffalo & Erie
County Workforce Investment Board (on Strategic Planning
Committee), as well as a member of the current Erie
Community College Presidential Search Committee. I led
the unanimous efforts in the legislature to support the
upgrades for the NRG/Huntley plant. My votes in the
legislature and the boards I serve reflect strong support for
assisting economic recovery and investments.
- If re-elected, I will continue to place an emphasis on these
areas, which are clearly the top priorities of the
constituents.
c. Delivering Services and Enhancing our Quality of Life
- I led the inter-municipal agreement of the Olmsted parks
with county-city agreements; I fought to maintain cultural
funding and support dedicating funds to culturals and
tourism; I voted to increase library support and co-
sponsored the Library Protection Act; I promoted more
efficient senior services, especially with transportation and
meals programs; I believe in the mission of county
government, which largely administers public health and
human services, public safety and service delivering areas,
such as elections, the clerk’s office and ECMC.
- I will continue my efforts on the very reason we are elected
to serve.

d. Reaching Out to Constituents

- Since I have been elected in 1996, I have been a full-time
legislator who’s proud of my constituent service. I maintain
a full service neighborhood office and I continue to visit
voters through annual door-to-door visits.
- I enjoy serving Buffalo and the Town of Tonawanda
residents and pledge my continued hard work and integrity
as their voice in county government.

4. Civil Rights actions are ensuring fairness and equity with laws and
policies. My past work has included strengthening whistleblower policies;
promoting reforms, especially through the County Charter (which won over
70% voter approval in November 2006); and working with management
and labor over the years for fairness and equity.

5. I pledge, and have in the past, to maintain a civil and issues-oriented

campaign.

6. yes.

7. yes.

Legislation/Issues of New York State: (at the time of this writing, I am unaware of
where the state bills are in the 2007 New York State Legislature) Based on the
descriptions provided, I would favor these issues with the exception of
S2800/A4978. For county matters, I will work with the current or incoming
executive branch, and my legislative colleagues, for any legislation or policies
that provide equity or prohibit discrimination.
