Projects
Introduction To Engineering Design
September 2010 to December 2010
Members:Paul Stewart, Andrew Rogers, Thomas Stefanini EIT, Bryan Gomes, Albert Tom, Michael Rutherford
The main concept of this project was conservation. There were many example projects to choose from, but
our group decided to develop a unit that locks into a gutter system of a house and turns running rainwater
into mechanical energy by spinning a turbine and ultimately to electrical energy by powering an attached
motor. The energy was then able to be stored in batteries and saved for later use.
Capstone Project
February 2012 to May 2012
Members:Paul Stewart, Mathew White, Charles Ohrin, Ian Marinaccio, Patrick Lowe, Ben Levitz, Brandon
Kennedy
The Civil Engineering students are first broken into teams. There are building teams with structural engineers
and geotechnical engineers and then there are teams of environmental engineers and transportation engineers.
The goal of each building team is to develop a structure in its entirety, ours being a hotel. Analysis of
zoning codes for our plot of land was the first element researched before even thinking about loads. A full
analysis of the live and dead loads to be expected in a hotel were to be calculated and allowed us to find
and locate where the steel skeleton beams and columns should go. This project required a lot of teamwork
and cooperation as the transportation teams were designing the roads and parking lots for the hotel and
the environmental team did site analysis. Finally, after the loads were known and the steel columns and
beams had been sized, the geotechnical portion of our team developed the foundation. We utilized computer
programs such as RISA 3D, Revit, and Robot Structural Analysis to aid us in the design.
Architectural Springs
September 2007 to December 2007
Members:Paul Stewart, Christianna Bennett, James Wisniewski, Tim Kim, Sean Dempsey, James Rigano
Without getting too architectural with the language, the project was simply about making secure connections.
We were told to go dumpster diving and find old recycled materials and break them down into connectable
modules. The recycled material I chose were bed mattresses. I cut them down until I just had the spring bed,
and then further cut apart each individual spring. I found that these spring connect beautifully in sheets by
intertwining them in each other and produce a lot of gradient visual qualities.
Route 52, Ocean City
May 2011 to August 2011
Members:Paul Stewart, Hardesty & Hanover
The Route 52 Causeway reconstruction project in Ocean City, NJ involves the replacement of existing
bridges supported on combination of timber and pre-cast reinforced concrete piles.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority prepared a major Coastal Permit to widen nearly 50 miles of Garden
State Parkway between Milepost 30 and Milepost 80. This includes replacement of the Bass River Bridge.
Tetris House Case Study
September 2009 to November 2009
Members:Paul Stewart
This case study was an exploration of drawing plans and sections in Adobe Illustrator and importing them
into Rhinoceros Nurbs modeling software. Once the plans and sections were completed in Illustrator, they
were extruded in Rhino to create a three-dimensional model of the building. The model of the building was
then rendered using VRay.
Trellis Study
January 2008 to March 2008
Members:Paul Stewart, Jeff Betts, Aaron Vinsel, Jenni Wilga
This project is based around the design of a trellis system on the edge of a solid plain. The trellis is
constructed out of lightweight stress-skin panels. The stress-skin panels are constructed out of foam
laminated wood. Each stress-skin panel acts as a single module and is attached at slowly increasing angles
via an L-bracket and a steel dowel pin connection. The system of panels also slowly begins to bend upwards
to exemplify it's lightweight nature. This allows light to filter through in an increasingly dramatic fashion.
The trellis is supported by a solid steel column and a cambered steel beam.
Beam/Column Study
January 2008 to March 2008
Members:Paul Stewart, Aaron Vinsel
A simple analysis of the physical loading of model basswood columns, beams, and trusses.
The Materials Handbook
January 2008 to May 2008
Members:Paul Stewart, Materials + Design Class
This publishing is a compilation of materials research developed by the ARCH 2150, Materials and Design,
Spring 2008 class at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, School of Architecture. It is intended to serve as a
manual help early architecture students with the understanding of materials and their implementation in
design. The 14 materials divided into 4 categories are formatted in a manner that would tell a designer
everything they need to know to make informed decisions.

The Church of Latter Day Saints - Jersey City

May 2013 to Present
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
YAS has performed concept studies to determine the most economical and feasible structural system for the
Jersey City LDS Church. 3 story 14,175 square foot Jersey City LDS Church has a total elevation height
of 146.5 ft and is located at 220 Hopkins Avenue in Jersey City, NJ. In our study we considered poured in
place concrete structural systems, bearing wall and plank systems and structural steel with metal deck and
concrete systems. We discovered that both poured in place concrete and bearing wall and plank systems are
not the best selections due to irregular shape of the church and offer much heavier structures compared with
steel and metal deck system. The steel and metal deck system is very flexible in addressing the structure
irregularities and offers lighter structure and in turn smaller foundation footings. Also any future alterations
or changes to the system can be achieved much easier with this system.
LaGuardia Community College Library Renovation
May 2013 to Present
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
LaGuardia Community College is expanding its library to include a new, technologically-advanced second
floor and nearly double the student seating. The library, currently one floor, will expand to two floors, and
the second floor will include a reading room, media lab, open study space and 11 group study rooms. One of
the many difficult tasks in executing this renovation is the design and implementation of a mezzanine level
supported by hangers suspended from above. The mezzanine level will use existing posts from bookshelves
below as additional support and will require the demolition of an existing concrete slab.
Apartment Complex - Long Island City, NY
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
10,000 sf apartment complex located in Long Island City, New York. Will comprise of 12 dwelling units, two
of which are duplex apartments with roof gardens. The building is an arrangement of pure geometric forms
easily discernible and pleasing to the eye without the use of ostentatious ornamentation.
Union Baptist Church - New Rochelle, NY
June 2013 to Present
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
Union Baptist Church is a historic house of worship located in Downtown New Rochelle, in Westchester
County, New York. The church was added to Westchester Inventory of Historic Places in 1994, chosen for
its cultural and historical characteristics as well as for its Neo-Romanesque edifice and unique architectural
details. This problem involves the checking of the reinforcement of a concrete restrained retaining wall on
the perimeter of the ground level.
245 Hillturn Lane, Roslyn Heights NY
July 2013 to Present
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
This renovation to an existing two story, timber residential house involved the demolition of a portion of the
existing structure and the sizing of new columns to be eccentrically embedded in existing concrete piers to

Page5

meet architectural requirements. Tributary areas were calculated as well as corresponding live and dead loads
to be exerted axially on each of the columns. After calculation and design, it appeared that HSS4x4x1/4#
steel columns spanning both floors would suffice the maximum applied force of 13kips.
SUNY Buffalo Canopy
July 2013 to Present
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
This project involved the design of a canopy varying in span from 16 feet to 10 feet above the first floor of
the SUNY Buffalo campus. The design was comprised of 5 custom cantilever beams framing into an HSS
beam across a span of 31.5 feet between existing columns and contained a surface area of approximately 500
square feet. Analysis of snow ground loading conditions and drift loading conditions were examined and
applied as bending moments to the custom cantilever beams and as both torsional and bending moments to
the HSS beam.
SUNY Buffalo Stairs
August 2013 to Present
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
The stairs for this building on the SUNY Buffalo campus consisted of a mono stringer spanning a maximum
total length of 44 feet. Small HSS tubes were welded to the stringer to attach to a 5#-8# bent plate which
made the stairs tread. The bent plate had 2# flaps on both sides to increase its rigidity as deflection was one
of the governing design parameters. A massive W24x370 steel I-beam was utilized for the stringer with
welded plates on both sides. A partial fixity connection was used for the stair to floor connection making this
design possible.
Con Edison Signage - Astoria, NY
June 2013 to Present
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
This project involved the design and embedment of various size signs at the Con Edison facility in Astoria,
NY. Wind load considerations were vital as this was the main force impacting the supporting structural
systems. Each sign was connected to HSS3x3x1/4 steel tubes via bent plate channels. Some of them were
embedded straight into the ground, and some were placed into concrete frustums with embedment lengths
and radii being functions of sign size.
SUNY Buffalo Bridge
October 2013 to Present
Members:Paul Stewart, YAS
This 86-foot long pedestrian sky-bridge connecting the new SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine and
Biomedical Sciences to the adjacent hospital was designed with live load and dead load considerations as
well as wind considerations. The bridge is constructed of two W14x109 top chords and three W14x145
bottom chords with HSS6x6 lateral members supporting a glass facade as well as 15-foot long W14x68 and
W14x61 beams supporting the floor and roof.
