INTRODUCTION
A Profession is a vocation founded upon specialized educational training.The
purpose of which is to supply disinterested objective counsel and service to others,
for a direct and definite compensation wholly a part from expection of other business
gain. The term is a truncation of the term liberal profession which is in turn an
agglicisation of the French term profession liberale .originally borrowed by English
users in the nineteenth century , It has been re borrowed by international users from
the late twentieth though the (upper middle) class over tones of the term do not seem
to survive retranslation "liberal Profession " are according to the Directive on
Recognition of Professional Qualifications(2005/36/EC)those practised on the basis of
relevant professional qualification in a personal ,responsible and professionally
independent capacity by those providing intellectual and conceptual services the
interest of the client and the public
DEFINITION OF PROFESSION
*According to "seessoms " professions are unique in that their members have
special knowledge , perform a specialized role and have control over their
occupations structure functions practice and destiny
*According to Roscoe poud he defined profession as a group pursuing a learned art as
a common calling in the spirit of public service
*Carr Saunders has defined a profession in this way A profession based upon
specialized intellectual study and training the main purpose of which is to supply
skilled service and advice to others for a definite fee or salary

In simple language ,A profession is a way of livelihood .It is a comprehensive


term. It includes all the areas of employment such as agriculture, industry,
service,fisheries etc.In which a human group acquire necessary means and facilities
for its livelihood. According to dictionary a profession is that in which the learning a
profession is that in which the learning of science or arts is required .The act of
processioning or claiming ;open declaration public a vowal or acknowledgement as
profession of friendship :a profession of faith*Profession is calling requiring
specialised knowledge and often long and intensive scsdamic preparation.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OCCUPATION AND OTHER PROFESSION.
The word occupation and profession are interchangeable profession and
occupation are almost the same ,with only minor diffidence between them.
The difference between occupation and profession can be stated with a
simple example Designing a building would be called a profession where as,
constructing a building is an occupation.
A Profession need extensive training and specialized knowledge.on the other
hand on occupation does not need any extensive training .A person with an occupation
need not have specialized knowledge of his trade. A Profession can be called an
occupation when a person is paid for his particular skills, and his help deep
knowledge Doctors, Engineers, Advocate,Journal scientist and many others , fall
under the professional category on the other hand person engaged in an occupation
are not paid for their knowledge but only for what they produce .Drivers ,clerk ,and
technicians fall under the category of occupation. It is noticeble that a profession tends

to be autonomous. When considering responsibilities s profession demands that the


rasonsibility lies with the individual.Moreover only a professional will be able to
access fellow professionals. In regard to an occupation no one has autonomous
power,he or she supervised by another person moreover , any person can make
assessment ,as this type of work doesn't require high degree of knowledge skill
well.professionals enjoy a higher social status than a person engaged is an occupation
another difference that the former is guided through certain ethical codes and is
regulated by certain statute.
CHARACTERSTICS OF PROFESSION
Scholars after studying the various profession have determined the common
symptoms existing in these various profession which are also known as the
characteristics of a profession.These symptoms or characteristics are as follow.1
SOCIAL CMMITMENT
Every profession has its social commitment person associated with every
profession have to be accountable profession are committed towards the society in one
or the other form.person associated with each profession are committed towards their
customers.
2.PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
Each profession has its own ethics which associated with that profession , such
as medical council , bar council etc .Any doctor or an advocate has to take its
membership and licence etc.and he is to follow the ethics prescribed by that council.In
case of refusal to follow the ethics,ones licence can be councelled

3.LINKED WITH THE FULFILMENT OF NEEDS OF AN INDIVIDUAL AND


SOCIETY
The main aim of any profession is to full fil the individual or social needs .
These needs are considered as an integral part of life , such as needs associated with
house construction, justice, treatment etc.
4.PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION
A Professional association is establish in every profession . This association is
responsible for growth and development of that profession.such association organise
their conference and make the people aware and impress with the new findings . In
this conference ,the problem associated with the profession are also considered .This
association function at the national and international level.
5.INDEPENDENT AND SELF RRGULATION.
Every profession has the symptoms of its independent and self regulation
.professional groups are not only free to determine the limits after accepting the fees
but are also accountable for their function on the basis of self regulations .
6.TRAINING. LENGTH
In order to adopt any profession ,one has to pass through the long process of
learning or training in which specific Knowledge are to be acquired ,only then the
permission to work in that profession can be branded .
FEE FOR SERVICES
If any professional group provide its service to the society ,It can change self
determined fees too.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE. TEACHER


1.DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT
The primary task of any teacher is through knowledge of the subject matter .
Which the teacher will attempt to get his students to learn .If he has no command over
the subject he shall not able to present the subject matter before the students in an
interesting manner.
2. AN EXPERT IN METHODOLOGY OF TEACHING.
It. Is essential that the social studies teacher is an expert of teaching the subject
.He should be conversant with the theory and practice of the new method.
3.A SCIENTISTS AS WELL AS AN ARTIST
A happy blend of the scientific and the romantic temper is needed in the social
studies teacher.
4. SOUND PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
The social studies teacher must have sound professional ethics. He must be
scrupulously honest in his intellect. Careful of the feelings of others and extremely
judicious in his statements.
5.A PERSON WHO GROWS PROFESSIONALLY
As a specialized expert in social relations, the social studies teacher is
often called upon to give speeches and review books, to lead discussion group and
moderate panel discussion .He is experted to know and keep abreast of local and state
events and affairs all over the world . He must continue to improve his knowledge and
to broader his experience. He should attend inservice Courses.

6. LOVE OF THE PROFESSION.


The social studies teacher should feel the importance of his profession .
Without an exclusive attention to his job he would fail in bringing forth a fine harvest
of young people who are able to contribute their best of the welfare of the country.
7. KNOWLEDGE OF CHILD PSYCHOLOGY AND EDUCATIONAL
PSYCHOLOGY.
Knowledge of psychology goes a long way in providing that basic
orientation towards problem of education and child development without which these
would be a considered waste of time, energy and human resources.
8. PREPARATION
Poor planning is so devastating in teaching social studies ,careful and
systematic arrangement of the subject matter and the classroom activities is conducive
to creative discipline. Studies should be well equipped with the modern sophisticated
technology in teaching.
9.MASTERY OF TEACHING SKILL
A social studies teacher should be highly trained in teaching skills and
competencies.
SIGNIFICANCE OF PROFESSION
*Good communication with professional expert ,colleagues and students.
*Refined values and behaviour.
*It serves a great social purpose
*There is cooperation achieved through a profession organisation.

*There is a degree of autonomy accorded the professional.


*The profession has controlled.
CONCLUSION
A professional educators we need to coprate in our work a sense of history. We
need to realize the important of relationship and interdependence in the highly
organised heavily populated urban world in which we work .planning and execute in a
continuous program of education is part of our development as profession.
