Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the Claude Watson Arts Program. We offer an exciting, enriched program in which
students work together in a strong arts and academic environment. The program is enriched by guest artists in the
classroom, arts-related field trips, co-curricular activities as well as a curriculum that extends beyond the ministry
expectation.
The Claude Watson Arts Program is a dual thrust program of the arts and academics for auditioned students in
grades 9 12. We provide a unique program where students pursue learning paths under the guidance of enthusiastic
teachers with arts specialty training.
The audition process allows us to match the demands of the program with each applicants interests, talents and
educational needs. The auditions will take place at Earl Haig Secondary School 100 Princess Avenue, North
York, ON. The auditions for all students currently in Grades 8, 9 & 10 will be conducted on Saturday, January 19,
and Monday, January 20, 2014. Please keep these days free. If needed there may be an additional audition date of
Tuesday, January 21st, for music applicants only.
Our deadline for applications is Friday, November 29th at 3:00 PM. All applications must be received into the
Main Office, Earl Haig Secondary School with an audition fee of $25.00 cash (if delivered in person) or cheque
payable to Earl Haig Secondary School.

Claude Watson Arts Program

MUSIC AUDITION

Auditions are 10-15 minutes.


Auditionees will write a 20min RCM Intermediate music-rudiments test before their audition.
Auditionees must provide their own accompanist (if one is needed).
Wind players, string players and singers are encouraged to prepare an accompanied audition.
Auditionees will be asked to do the following in their audition:
-sight-read a musical selection of 24-48meas.
-take an ear-test (identify intervals: P1, P4, P5, M/m-2, M/m7, M/m-3, M/m-6, tritone)
-sight-sing a single line of vocal music (8 meas. in solfege or with a la syllable)
- clap a given rhythmic passage of about 4 measures.
-take part in a short interview to discuss his/her reasons/motivation for studying music

N.B. Students must bring a copy of their music for the auditioners
All Claude Watson students enter the program specializing on one instrument.
Students should refer to the Royal Conservatory instrumental syllabi to choose their audition piece(s).
They should engage their private teacher to help them choose appropriate repertoire.

Specific requirements for instrumentalists and singers


Pianists perform:
-one memorized piece from the standard repertoire (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, et al)
Recommended level: Gr-9 or higher
-our choice of 2-handed scales (preferably 4 octaves, major & minor)
-a musical selection for sight-reading (24-48meas)
-an ear-test (identify intervals: P1, P4, P5, M/m-2, M/m7, M/m-3, M/m-6, tritone)
-a single line of vocal music (8 meas. of sight-singing, treble or bass clef)
-a clapping test (clap a given notated rhythm: 4 meas)

Wind-players perform:
-one (preferably) memorized solo piece from their repertoire. (NB: not a part from a band score)
recommended level: Gr-6 or higher
-our choice of a 2 or 3-octave scale.
-a musical selection for sight-reading (16-32meas)
-an ear-test (identify intervals: P1, P4, P5, M/m-2, M/m7, M/m-3, M/m-6, tritone)
-a single line of vocal music (8 meas. of sight-singing)
-a clapping test (clap a given notated rhythm: 4 meas)

Percussion-players perform:
-one (preferably) memorized solo piece for vibraphone or marimba (NB: not a part from a band score)
recommended level: Gr-6 or higher
-one etude for timpani (or 24-36 measures from a band score)
-one snare-drum etude (or 24-36 measures from a band score)
-a musical selection for sight-reading (16-32meas)
-an ear-test (identify intervals: P1, P4, P5, M/m-2, M/m7, M/m-3, M/m-6, tritone)
-a single line of vocal music (8 meas. of sight-singing)
Singers perform:
-one memorized solo piece from the classical repertoire. with or without accompaniment. (preferably
with)
NB: no CD accompaniment
recommended level: Gr-5 or higher
-a musical selection for sight-singing (16-32meas)
-an ear-test (identify intervals: P1, P4, P5, M/m-2, M/m7, M/m-3, M/m-6, tritone)
-a clapping test (clap a given notated rhythm: 4 meas)
A student may choose to audition with a lower level piece than we recommend. In some areas, like voice,
where students tend to mature later, a promising student may succeed with a lower level piece. Our
recommendations however, reflect the current norms at Claude Watson Music.
String-players perform:
-one (preferably) memorized solo piece from their repertoire. (Could be an unaccompanied piece or a
movement
with piano accompaniment.)
recommended level: (Vln, Vla, Vc: Gr-6 or higher, Cbass: Grade 5 level or higher)
-our choice of 2-octave scales. (for violin, viola or cello---3-octaves)
-a musical selection for sight-reading (16-32meas)
-an ear-test (identify intervals: P1, P4, P5, M/m-2, M/m7, M/m-3, M/m-6, tritone)
-a single line of vocal music (8 meas. of sight-singing)
-a clapping test (clap a given notated rhythm: 4 meas)

Auditionees who have taken RCM performance or theory exams (rudiments, harmony, analysis, counterpoint
or history) are encouraged to include photocopies of their accomplishments with their application.

Q: What should I expect at a Claude Watson Music program audition?
A: See our Music Audition Information Page.
Q: How many people are accepted?
A: We typically accept up to 25 to 30 students per class. A typical instrumental
breakdown is this:
8-9 winds & percussionists, 8-9 strings, 8-9 singers, 3-4 pianists
For the year 2013-14 the music program has very specific needs:

Q: When and how will I be notified of my acceptance?


A: You will be notified by mail approximately 3 weeks after your audition.
Q: If Im not accepted into grade 9, can I re-audition for Grade 10 next
year or Grade 11?
A: Yes! Our students circumstances change from year to year. Students may
leave our school, city or country. Program space then becomes available.
Q: Do you offer composition as a field of music study?
A: Composition forms the core of our senior (Gr 11-12) music theory study.
Important to these programs are the resident professional ensembles that advise,
read and record our students compositions: the internationally famous GryphonTrio and Amici Ensemble. In the last several years we have also worked with the
Esprit Orchestra in the preparation of short orchestral worksrecorded by a
student orchestra complemented by Esprit players.In addition, particularly wellprepared candidates have elected to concentrate on composition for their Gr 11
and 12 years. (as composition majors)

Q: How active is the music department in performance?


A: We are very, very busy with public performances from October to June. Our
major departmental events are held at professional halls: MacMillan Theatre,
Grace Church on the Hill, Glenn Gould Studio. We are involved annually in many
music festivals: Contemporary Showcase, Kiwanis, North York Music festival,
Musicfest, OMFA(provincial level competition). We have held many orchestral,
choral and chamber music workshops with prominent musicians: Mario Bernardi,
Boris Brott, Victor Feldbrill, Gary Kulesha, Brian Current, Erica Rhaum, Jerome
Summers, Stephen Hatfield. We have been regularly invited to premiere
Canadian Music Centre commissioned works for strings and string orchestra and
we are regularly called upon by the TDSB to provide music for official functions.
Q: Where do music graduates go after completing the CW music program?
A: Our music graduates have been accepted into all of the prominent postsecondary music programs in North Americamost on significant scholarships.
The list of schools includes all of the major American and Canadian professional
schools.
In the US: Juilliard, Curtis, Manhattan, Eastman, Oberlin, Cleveland, Indiana,
New England Conservatory, Peabody, Interlochen Academy, Dave Brubeck
institute, Berklee School.
In Canada: U of T, McGill, UBC, Glenn Gould School, UWO, et al.
In addition to gaining entrance to prominent professional music schools, our
music graduates have gained admission to major academic institutions
(sometimes as double majors in music and another subject): Cornell, Harvard.

1) Priority of placement in the requested school will be based on a lottery if applications exceed the space
available at the requested school.

2) If admitted, a student is expected to continue at the requested school until graduation.
