KangGuruIndonesiatravelsalloverthecountryrunningworkshopsforEnglishteachers.Thisiswherewehavebeensofarthisyear.

Workshop 25 August 2015

AnaandGregheadedofftothebeautifulislandofAlor,northofKupang.Weweregreatedbyibu
Sophiawhohadorganisedtheworkshop.Shewasaballofenergyandenthusiasmandwantedtodo
whatevershecouldtohelpoutherteachers.TheopeningwasmadebyPakAlbert,theheadofthe
DinasPendidikan.HeremindedeveryoneofthelongrelationshipbetweenAlorandAustralia,with39
newschoolsbeingbuiltontheislandsince2008.The71teacherswereenthusiasticandexcitedabout
theworkshop,andasthephotosshow,theygotrightintotheactivitieswehadplanned.Averysuccessfulday.

ThetriptoGresikwasaninterestingoneforus.WewererunningtheworkshopattheonlyMTsNin
Gresik.Agreatschoolwithafantasticprincipalwhoobviouslydidagreatdealforherschool.The
workshopwasorgansiedbyPakSuryadifromtheMadrasahDevelopmentCentre,alongtimefriendof
KangGuruIndonesia.Fortytwoteachersattendedtheworkshop.Checkoutthephotos.

OurworkshopinKandanganwasagreatsuccess,withagroupof53enthusiasticteachers.Ourthanks
goespeciallytoPakNordiansyah(Kep.DinasPendidikanHuluSungaiSel.)andPakAsquallanyforall
theirhardworkandencouragementtobringtheworkshoptofruition.

GROBOGAN, CENTRAL JAVA

SixtytwoteachersattendedtheworkshopinGrobogan.TheworkshopwasablyorganisedbyFokus
MTsPSAAIBEPandheldatMTsSAAlHidayahKarangRayung.Theschoolhasalongassociationwith
Australia,havingbeenbuiltundertheAIDEPprogram.Theschoollogocontainsapictureofakangaroo,
andtherelationshipisincludedintheschoolsong.WefeltverywelcometotheAlHidayahfamily.

Rensing,EastLombok.


WewerewarmlywelcomedbyMr.H.M.Zulfadli,theHeadandFounderofthelocalorganisationthat
managestheschool,YayasanPondokPesantrenBirrulWalidainNWRensing.

TheworkshopwasopenedbyMr.H.MuhammadSaleh,theRegionalMadrasahDirectorfromthe
DepartmentofReligiousAffairs,EastLombok.Hiskindwordsspokeoftheimportanceofproviding
educationforallchildrenandtheimportanceofschoolinginthelivesofallyoungpeople.Hesawthe
workshopasawayofhelpingEnglishteachersimprovetheirskillsandknowledgetobenefittheirstudents.

ThiswasfollowedbyaheartfeltwelcomefromMr.Nuruddin,theprincipaloftheschool.Mr.NuruddinisalongtimesupporterofKangGuruIndonesia,
havingattendedapresentationwhilehewasastudent,thenasateacher,andnowasaprincipal.Itissoinspiringtoseeanindividualsocommittedto
Englishlearningandwantingthebestforhisstudents.

TheELTworkshopwasattendedby62juniorsecondaryschoolEnglishteachersfromthesurroundingdistricts.Itwasgreattoseesomanyyoung
teacherswhowereclearlykeentoimprovetheirskillsinteaching.Anatookthemorningsession,leadingtheparticipantsthroughademonstration
lessononlisteningusingthethreestagesofanactivity:prelistening,whilelisteningandpostlistening.Thisrequiredgroupsofteacherstofocusonthe
stagesofalessonandactivitiesthatcanbeincludedateachstage.TeacherstooktherolesofstudentswithAnaastheteacher,whichallowed
participantstoexperiencetheactivitiesasastudentwould.Thiswasfollowedbyademonstrationofhowtousesongsintheclassroom.Afterawell
deservedlunchbreak,Gregdemonstratedareadingactivityusingthethreestages,followedbyasessionexploringhowtousegamesandactivitiesin
theEnglishlanguageclassroomtosupportthelanguagelearningprocess.

Uponarrival,theKangGuruIndonesiateamandparticipantswerewelcomedbyMr.YahyaSoud,
SecretaryofthelocalDistrictEducationOffice,whoofficiallyopenedtheworkshopbytalkingabouttheimportanceofteachingandeducationandthe
roleofteachersinthelearningprocess.Healsospokeoftheimportanceofprofessionaldevelopmentforteachers.

TheELTworkshopwasattendedby46juniorsecondaryschoolEnglishteachersfromthesurroundingdistricts.Itwasgreattoseesomanyyoung
teacherswhowereclearlykeentoimprovetheirskillsinteaching.Anatookthemorningsession,leadingtheparticipantsthroughademonstration
lessononlisteningusingthethreestagesofanactivity:prelistening,whilelisteningandpostlistening.Thisrequiredgroupsofteacherstofocusonthe
stagesofalessonandactivitiesthatcanbeincludedateachstage.Thiswasfollowedbyademonstrationofhowtousesongsintheclassroom.After
lunch,Gregdemonstratedareadingactivityusingthethreestages,followedbyasessiononusinggamesintheEnglishlanguageclassroom.

Specialist,andRahmaDianaSari(Ana),EnglishLanguageTeaching(ELT)Outreach
SpecialistTrainingandResources,facilitatedanELTworkshopatMTs(Madrasah
Tsanawiyah,orIslamicJuniorSecondarySchool)AnnajahKalimukti,inthesmallvillageof
Kalimukti,inPabedilan,Cirebon.

Uponarrival,theKangGuruIndonesiateamwerewelcomedbyMr.SalimMasykur,the
RegionalDirector(PimpinanHarian)oftheMadinatunnajahKalimuktiorganisation.Heexplainedhowtheorganisationwasestablishedin1989to
provideeducationalopportunitiesfororphanedchildrenfromFloresandPapuafollowingadevastatingtsunami.Overtheyears,theorganisation
hasgrownandnowconsistsofIslamicschoolsatthenursery,primary,juniorandsecondarylevels,includingMTsAnnajahKalimukti.Therearenow

550studentsattendingtheIslamicschools,manyonfullscholarships,withmorethan200boarders.

Mr.SalimsaidhestronglybelievedthatEnglishisanimportantlanguageforthestudentstolearnasitwillhelptheminthefuture,particularlyin
gettingajob.Beforetheworkshop,Mr.SaliminvitedAnaandJoannetogiveamotivationalspeechtotheprimaryandsecondaryschoolstudents.
Anagaveaspeech,thenJoannetaughtthemasimpleEnglishsong,Head,Shoulders,KneesandToes,endingwithencouragingwords
remindingstudentstoworkhardanddotheirbest,notonlyinEnglish,butinallareasofthecurriculum.

TheELTworkshopwasattendedby26juniorsecondaryschoolEnglishteachersfromthesurroundingdistrict.Itwasgreattoseesomanyyoung
teacherswhowereclearlykeentoimprovetheirskillsinteaching.Joannetookthemorningsession,leadingtheparticipantsthroughareading
demonstrationlesson,requiringgroupsofteacherstofocusonthestagesofalessonandactivitiesthatcanbeincludedateachstage.Afterlunch,
AnacontinuedwithsessionsaboutusingsongsandgamesintheEnglishlanguageclassroom.

On10February,theKangGuruIndonesiateamfacilitateditsfirstEnglishLanguageTeaching(ELT)
workshopof2015,atSMK(SekolahMenengahKejuruan,orSpecialistVocationalSchool)Karya
Nasional,intheKuningandistrictofCirebon,WestJava.

JoanneDickinson,EnglishLanguageLearningSpecialist,andRahmaDianaSari(Ana),ELTOutreachSpecialistTrainingandResources,
travelledtoKuninganandwerewarmlywelcomedbyMr.EdiSunaryo,theheadoftheworkshoporganisingcommittee.Mr.Edi,whoisalsoan
EnglishteacheratSMKKaryaNasional,hadworkedtirelesslywiththecommitteeatveryshortnoticetoensurethevenuewaswellpreparedtohost
theworkshop.Duetothecommitteeshardworkinspreadingtheword,60juniorsecondaryschoolEnglishteachersfromtheKuningandistrict
joinedtheworkshop.

TheworkshopopeningceremonyincludedawelcomingspeechfromMr.Edi,whosaidthathehadbeenwaitingformanyyearsfortheKangGuru
IndonesiateamtocometoKuningan,andthathehopedthiswouldbethefirstofmanyvisits.TheSMKKaryaNasionalPrincipal,Mr.YepriEsa,then
followedwithaspeech,emphasisingthatstudentsabilitytospeakEnglishisaprioritytopreparethemforthefuture,andthatEnglish
teachersneedtocontinueupgradingtheirskillstoensuretheirstudentshavehighcompetencyinEnglish.TheofficialopeningwasmadebyMr.
AsepTaufik,DistrictHeadfromtheDepartmentofEducationandCulture,Kuningan.Therewasalsoanextratreatfortheguestsandparticipants
whenstudentsfromtheSMKKaryaNasionalEnglishClubgaveashortpresentation,Howtherainbowgotitscolours.

TheworkshopbeganwithJoanneleadingtheparticipantsthroughareadingdemonstrationlesson,requiringgroupsofteacherstofocusonthe
stagesofalessonandactivitiesthatcanbeincludedateachstage.Afterlunch,Anacontinuedwithsessionsexploringhowtousesongsandgames
intheEnglishlanguageclassroom.

Thisworkshopwasagreatstartto2015,astheparticipantswereveryenthusiasticandwillingtotrynewstrategiesandapproachestolearning
English.
