Factors to be aware of before beginning migration

Purpose

This topic describes prerequisites and other factors that you should be aware of before
beginning migration from Release LA2.0.x to Release LA3.0.
General

Before beginning migration from Release LA2.0.x to Release LA3.0, you should be
aware of or ensure the following have occurred:

In the migration from LTE RAN Release LE2.0 and Release LA2.0.x to LTE RAN
Release LE3.0.0 and Release LA3.0, the ePC (5620 SAM, 5780 DSC (PCRF), 7750
PGW, 7750 SGW, and 9471 MME) is migrated before the eNodeBs are migrated, as
would typically be the case.
Moreover, ePC LE2.0 supports only eNodeBs LA2.0 and ePC LE3.0 supports only
eNodeBs LA3.0. To ensure that the eNodeBs stay in sync with the ePC during the
migration, all eNodeBs must be migrated from Release LA2.0.x to Release LA3.0
during the same timeframe (a few days before the ePC is migrated) and the eNodeBs
must be migrated without any delays between the first eNodeB migrations and the last
eNodeB migrations.
The Alcatel-Lucent 9453 XMS Release LA2.0.x is replaced by 5620 SAM 8.0 Rx. If
the migration fails, a fallback can be done to return the eNodeBs back to
Alcatel-Lucent 9453 XMS. Do not decommission Alcatel-Lucent 9453 XMS until the
Release LA3.0 migration is complete and operational.
Existing Alcatel-Lucent 9959 NPO data will not be migrated to the new Release
LA3.0 Alcatel-Lucent 9959 NPO server.
No configuration management changes made using the Release LA2.0.x
Alcatel-Lucent 9453 XMS server will be reflected in the 5620 SAM 8.0 Rx server
after the Release LA2.0.x CM XML snapshot has been generated and sent to the
4G-OPENED team by the local team.
Custom CSA users created in the Release LA2.0.x Alcatel-Lucent 9453 XMS cannot
be migrated to the 5620 SAM 8.0 Rx. You will need to recreate them manually on the
5620 SAM 8.0 Rx server.
The local team will have to keep a copy in one repository machine of all eNodeB CM
XML snapshots.
The following principles will be used while migrating the CM XML data:

PRELIMINARY

Release LA2.0.x settings are kept and adapted to the Release LA3.0 model, except
for customer-restricted or system-reserved parameters, which are forced to their
Release LA3.0 recommended value.
New Release LA3.0 parameters are aligned with Release LA3.0 generic templates
provided by the 4G-OPENED team.
No Release LA3.0 features are activated until after the migration is completed.

Factors to be aware of before beginning migration

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

It is up to the eNodeB to migrate its data, and not the 9452 WPS.
Each eNodeB software release has an associated template delivery. The template
and software releases must match. For example, the template delivery for LA3.0.1
is not compatible with LA3.0.0 software and the LA3.0.0 golden parameter
template is not compatible with LA3.0.1 software.
Migration from IPv4 to IPv6 can be done only after eNodeBs are migrated to Release
LA3.0. Release LA2.0 does not support IPv6.

Overview

This procedure describes how to upgrade 9412 eNodeB LA2.0 clusters to LA3.0 from
5620 SAM.

PRELIMINARY

Migration procedures

General

The eNodeB upgrade is split into several steps which can be performed a few hours, days
or even weeks apart as follows:
1. The first step is the preparation of the upgrade: download the new software, perform a
backup and pre-checks.
2. The second step is the upgrade itself. After some checks, the eNodeB software is
activated and the eNodeB resets in order to take into account this software change.
This step has to be performed during the maintenance window because there is an
impact on the service (traffic).
3. The third step is the acceptance or rejection of the new software. The acceptance has
no impact on the service (traffic). A rejection does impact service (traffic), therefore it
also has to be performed during a maintenance window.
Between the second and third step, the eNodeB is in an uncommitted state also called
probing phase. It runs with the new software, accepts the configuration changes but in
case the reject is requested, all configuration changes are discarded and the eNodeB
comes back to the software and configuration data prior to the upgrade.

The eNodeB resets to accept the new software, this takes about 3 minutes.
The eNodeB will then be up in LA 3.0 software version. If the activated software
fails, the eNodeB falls back to LA 2.0.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Post-check after software activation: When the software activation is successful and the
eNodeB is running properly, the following checks are performed in order to ensure, as
much as possible, the correct eNodeB behavior and service:

Investigate any new alarms.

Check the lteCell, X2 and S1 status.

Check that the licensed capacity corresponds to the capacity before the upgrade.
Wait for the granularity period (15 minutes) and check that PM files are available on
the OMC.

Check performance monitoring on eNodeB and compare with the eNodeB

performance before the upgrade.

If all these operations are successful:

Restart if needed any stopped PCMD

Call trace and debug trace.
Backup the upgrade eNodeB

If any critical issue is detected or if the service is not satisfactory, the operator/on-site
team may perform a reject of this new software version. From this stage, the eNodeB is
running on an uncommitted state, or probing phase. All configuration updates are possible
and there is no restriction on the service it provides.
But in case the software is rejected or in case of eNodeB internal error, all the
modifications performed during this phase will be lost and the eNodeB falls back to the
software and configuration running prior to the upgrade. Therefore, special care is needed
for any transport modification, as they will be lost in case of the eNodeB returning to
previous version.

This procedure accepts the software on the eNodeB to end the probing phase, and
therefore to indicate that the software is running correctly. This can be performed outside
the maintenance window, a few hours or days after the software activation. In this phase
there is only one step indicated here below. This procedure includes one step: accept new
software.
See 5620 SAM LTE RAN User Guide, 3HE 06262 AAxx TQZZA, Part, LTE RAN
maintenance, Chapter 12, LTE RAN device maintenance, 12.5 eNodeB software
upgrades, for details.
Steps

Perform the following procedure to accept the new software on the eNodeB.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Accept new software: From the 5620 SAM, select the eNodeB, accept the new software
and launch the new software action.
It is possible to accept multiple eNodeBs at the same time. There is no service impact
(traffic) when accepting the software. The eNodeB does not reset, and the link to the
eNodeB is not lost.
Note: From this acceptance, it is not possible for the operator to reject the new
software.

Procedure 3-1: Reject eNodeB software upgrade from 5620

SAM to previous eNodeB software
Overivew

This procedure reject the install software on the eNodeB. If the new eNodeB software is
not satisfactory (or for any other reason), it is possible to return to previous software
version and configuration. This procedure includes the following steps:
1. Reject new software
2. Post-check EnodeB after software rejection
See 5620 SAM LTE RAN User Guide, 3HE 06262 AAxx TQZZA, Part, LTE RAN
maintenance, Chapter 12, LTE RAN device maintenance, Section 12.3, NE maintenance
preparation and Section 12.5, eNodeB software upgrades, for details.
Steps

Perform the following procedure to reject the new software load from the 9412 eNodeB
upgrade.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Reject new software: Reject new software load as follows:

1. From the 5620 SAM, select the eNodeB where the new software needs to be rejected
and launch the reject new software action.
All modifications which have been applied to the eNodeB since its new software
activation will be lost. If any transport modification has been performed, the
Operator/on-site team must ensure that the transport backhaul is compatible to the
previous LA 2.0 software and transport configuration (IPv4, etc.).
In order to return to previous version and take into account the previous configuration, the
eNodeB will reset. This will take about three minutes. The eNodeB will then be up in LA
2.0 software version and configuration prior to the upgrade.
If the rejection of the new software fails; the eNodeB falls back to LA 2.0.
It is possible to reject more than one eNodeB in parallel.
