Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty sat

A note from Ms. Hofer...

October was an adventurous month as we observed the seasonal changes around us. In visual arts we created abstract paintings of falling leaves. We are fully into the swing of our routines
and are ready to start focusing on our pre-literacy and math skills.
We will be starting Jolly Phonics this month.
November 4th and 5th I will be out of the classroom completing the EYE assessments with the four year olds, so the students will
have a guest teacher during this time.
Heres to another great month,
Mrs. Hollinger

The Theme of the month: HOW THINGS WORK

Throughout the month of November we will be exploring

how things work while focusing on machines. We will be doing
several science experiments, we will be taking apart electronics
and looking inside, and finding answers to whatever inquiries
your children may have. This will be a month of explorations!
We will be doing a mini-unit at the beginning of the month
based on the song: who stole the cookie from the cookie jar!

Show and Share Schedule for November

Below is a schedule for the pre-k Show and Share. Your childs job that day is to bring one small item to show
the class, and share something about it. Please pay attention to the date that your child is scheduled. If your child
is not scheduled for November, then they will start in December.

Celebration of learning
Once again the RCSD is continuing
The Celebration of Learning conferences will actively illustrate and
involve parents in the activities in which children take part at school.
Students will lead their parents around to learning centres that exhibit a variety of skills in areas such as knowledge and alphabet,
mathematics, oral language and literacy, fine motor, and gross
motor skills. By accompanying the child at each station, parents will witness the child completing a variety of engaging activities. They will gain insight into the learning environment of
the Prekindergarten and Kindergarten classroom, while observing their children demonstrating
essential skills.
The developmental skills represent the Prekindergarten Essential Learning Experiences and
Kindergarten curriculum as put forth by the Ministry of Education. They are assessed on the
Early Years Evaluation.
While completing the activities or upon completion of the stations, the teacher will meet with
the parent(s) and student to discuss their observations and the childs progress. This process
with the teacher will help celebrate the students success and outline opportunities for
growth. We trust that parents will feel engaged in their childrens learning.

EYE Testing
Our school division has continued to implement the Early Years Evaluation Direct Assessment (EYE-DA) for children starting kindergarten in fall 2014. All Prekindergarten teachers have received specialized training and will spend time with
your child one-to-one, observing his or her skills and abilities. This assessment
takes about 45 minutes and includes a variety of play-based questions and hands-on
activities; it is a lot of fun for children!

The EYE-DA is administered to incoming kindergarten children aged 4-5 years,

as they prepare to make the transition into school. The purpose of this initiative is to
determine each childs development in these four key areas:
1. Awareness of Self and Environment;
2. Cognitive Skills;
3. Language and Communication; and,
4. Physical Development.
Parents/Caregivers will receive a copy of their childs results after the assessment is complete, including information on the four key areas. This will
be discussed during the three way conferences.
In an effort to meet each childs learning needs, results of the EYE-DA can be
used by educators to plan instruction for the entire class, for small groups and for
individual student needs. If you would like more information about the EYEDA, please visit
www.earlyyearsevaluation.com or contact your classroom teacher.
