OBJECTIVE:
1. To understand the usage of condenser, valve and separation process.

1.0 PROCEDURE
1.Open the Aspen HYSYS
2.Press new, and firstly insert the component in component list

3.Insert the component, choosing from fluid packages and press stimulation.

3. Arrange the equipment and insert material streams.

4. Insert the feed component information

Under Principles of Process Flowsheet Simulation, access Getting Started in HYSYS (overview).
Its main menu consists of four sections (1. Define the Fluid Package, 2. Set Up the Simulation, 3.
Convergence of Simulation, and 4. Advanced Techniques). You should review the module
Property Package in the first section, and the first three modules in the second section on Setting
Up the Simulation.

4.0 QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSIONS

4.1 QUESTIONS
1. What is the temperature of the outlet stream of the condenser?
-The temperature of the outlet stream of the condenser is 123.7 C
2. What are the mole fractions for ammonia and water in the vapor and liquid stream of the
separator?
-Mole fractions of Ammonia is 0.8238 and water is 0.1762
3. Determine the mass flow rate for each outlet of the separator.
-The mass flow rate outlet for stream 4 is 4427 kgmol/h and for the stream 5 is 109.1
kg/h

4.2 DISCUSSION

This experiment is to perform separation of ammonia and water. The purpose is to

understand the separation process. First of all, the mixture of ammonia and water in vapor phase
is feed into the condenser. At the condenser, the pressure is at 1724 kPa. The heat is also
removed and the vapor phase will turn to vapor - liquid phase. The vapor liquid phase is then
flow into the valve. At the valve, the pressure was decreased to 1034 kPa. The effect of the
decrease of pressure will be observed. Then, the vapor liquid phase of mixture will flow into
the separator. At the separator, the product will divide into two streams which are liquid and
vapor product.

From the program run, the temperature of the outlet stream from the condenser is 123.7
C, the outlet pressure is 1034 kPa. The mole fraction for ammonia and water in the vapor outlet
of separator are 0.8238 and 0.1762 respectively. In the vapor outlet, the ammonia is the major
product.By referring to the results of this laboratory, the reason why we required a valve to
expand the pressure of effluent of the condenser is because the feed is in mixture of liquid and
gases. Thus, it is suitable to used valve to substitute the function of expander. Outlet pressure of
the valve should be 1034 kPa because it is the required pressure needs to be expanding before the
mixture of ammonia and water enters the flash vessel.
