The bald eagle is a large bird with a white head, brown body and bright yellow
eyes. It has sharp claws on its feet and a hooked beak to catch and eat fish. It is the
national symbol of the United States of America and it appears on US money. The bald
eagle got its name from the early colonists. In those days, bald meant white. In the
1700s there were hundreds of thousands of these birds in North America. The eagle
population became very small because people hunted them and because of a dangerous
chemical sprayed on crops.
