Task 1
Pasan is working as a research assistant in ITI (Industrial Technology Institute). The main function of
the institute to carry out the material tests for the samples sends by the various companies. The
institute is also looking forward to introduce new vehicles to the market (P7, M2, and D2)

1.5 Figure 2.1 shows the Stress strain curves for four different polymeric materials. Describe the
properties of each material.
Task 2
Materials fail in many ways. Failure is normally considered to occur when the component/structure.
Product is no longer fit for its intended purpose. This may be because the material has parted
and failure by breakage has many aspects. Failure might also occur because the material has
deformed without breaking. The failure might be due to wear and degradation so that that the
component will no longer function.
Ex: When a piece of iron material exposed to rain for a long time a brown colored powder can be
observed on the surfaces. If a concrete roof is exposed to rain for long time water comes inside. (P 6,
P8, M3)
2.1 Name and explain the four failure modes of engineering materials.
2.2 Describe the different types of degradation process associated with Metals, Ceramics and
polymers while
2.3 Describe the reason to observe the brown color powder on the surface of iron materials
2.4 Describe the prevention methods for iron materials
