Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 1 - Samkshepa Ramayanam

Saint Valmiki asks Narada Muni if there is a person with the following sixteen qualities in the present world.
Who exists at present in this world who has all good qualities, who is valorous, who is the one devoted to
just action, who is grateful and who tells only truth in all circumstances? Who is that man who has all the
good characters, who does only good to all, who is extremely knowledgeable, who is capable of doing all
right actions and who loves all? Who is that man who attracts minds of others, who has won over his anger,
who is sparkling, who does not have jealousy and who is fear to even devas in war?
I am extremely anxious to know about such a person. O Narada! , only you are capable of telling me about
a man with all these qualities.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 2 Brahmas Visit

Hearing Samkshepa Ramayanam from Narada Muni, Rishi Valmiki worshipped Narada Muni with his
disciples. Later, Narada Muni left to heaven. Pondering on the samkshepa Ramayanam for some time,
Rishi Valmiki left to Tamasa River with his disciples for Madhyanikam (Sandhya Vandanam at Noon).
Seeing the waters of the river free from mud, pleasant and transparent, Rishi Valmiki said to his disciple
Bharadwaja that he would bathe and do Madhyanikam at this very spot. As Rishi Valmiki saw the extensive
forest on all sides, he saw a pair of cranes moving about, without parting from each other and making
charming sounds. Suddenly, as Rishi Valmiki was looking on, a Nishada (Hunter) struck the male crane
mortally with his arrow. Seeing its mate fall to the ground stained in blood, the female bird gave out a piteous
wail. Feeling sorry for the female crane, Rishi Valmiki was filled with pity and compassion for the female
bird. Finding the Nishadas act sinful, Rishi Valmiki said
m nida pratih tvamagama vat sam .
yatkraucamithundekamavadh kmamohitam
May you not have peace of mind for endless years, O Nishada! Since you killed one of the pair of cranes
infatuated by passion.
Rishi Valmiki was now thinking of this verse again and again and was wondering how this verse set in four
metrical feet, each containing eight letters and rhyming like a song came out naturally. He instructed his
disciples Bharadwaja and others to note this as his poetry and the disciples memorized and repeated this
couplet. This couplet was suggestive of the entire theme of Ramayanam and the Rishi felt pleased.
Rishi Valmiki then returned to his hermitage still brooding over the same incident and the couplet. While
discussing other topics with his students, Rishi Valmiki had this couplet lingering at the back of his mind.
Then, Chaturmukha Brahma, the creator of the fourteen worlds appeared at the ashram of Rishi Valmiki.
The Rishi received Brahma with due respect, washed his feet and offered an asanam (seat).
Even though Brahma was in front of him and the Rishi offered due prayers, Rishi Valmikis mind was still
on the couplet and he repeated the couplet to Brahma thinking that he unconsciously subjected the Nishada
to a curse.
Brahma said Let this metrical composition be conducive to your glory alone. You need not brood over this
anymore. Through my will, Saraswathi made you utter these words. Tell the story of Sri Rama, his whole
life on earth as you heard from Narada Muni. Whatever account there is about Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and
all others, known and unknown will be revealed to you. No description of yours in Ramayanam will prove
false. Render the sacred and soul ravishing story of Sri Rama in similar verses. Ramayanam will remain in
the three worlds so long as the mountains and rivers remain on the surface of the earth and you will remain
where ever you like as long as Ramayanam is current. Saying so, Brahma disappeared.
Thereupon, Rishi Valmiki and his disciples were filled with wonder. His disciples repeated the verse again
and again and were delighted and astounded at the honor conferred on their Guru by Brahma. The
illustrious sage then composed the Ramayanam with soul ravishing versus set to even number of syllables
consisting of words depicting the noble deeds of Sri Rama.
Sri Krishnarmapamastu! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya! Rama Rama Rama!
Elders have commented in many ways on this opening verse of Valmiki Ramayanam. This is one example:
maa= Goddess Lakshmi;
niShaada= Oh! Vishnu
niShadiiti asmin iti niShaada; yat = by which act;
krounca midhunaat = the couple of demons, namely Ravana and Mandodari;

kaama mohitam= that impassioned one and stole Seetha;

ekam= that one, Ravana;
avadhii= you killed; by that act of yours;
shashvatiisamaa= everlasting for ages;
pratiShTaam= divine sanctity;
tvam agama= you, get.
The abode of Goddess Lakshmi, namely oh, Vishnu, by which act of your killing one male demon named
Ravana, who in his passion abducted Seetha, and thus you eradicated the vice from the earth, for that you
get an everlasting divine sanctity, as Rama, for ages to come.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 3 Sage Valmiki perceives Ramayanam

Having heard from Narada Muni, the entire theme of Ramayanam which promises religious merit and
worldly prosperity to its readers and hearers, Sage Valmiki sought to discover directly a detailed account
of Sri Ramas life on earth. Sitting on the Darbha grass, he did Achamanam and could perceive directly and
clearly in reality every detail of Ramayanam by the power of Yoga (Divya Dhristhi) conferred on him by
Brahma. Not only could Sage Valmiki see what had happened so far, but could also envision whatever
deeds were yet to be performed by Sri Rama. Thus, Sage Valmiki wrote the story of Sri Rama set to metrical
composition.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama! Rama! Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 4 Kusa Lava sing Ramayanam

Sage Valmiki composed the Ramayanam with marvelous expressions depicting the life story of Sri Rama
in twenty four thousand slokas and six kandams. The Uttarakandam, the sixth kanda dealt with future
events. As Sage Valmiki was wondering who could memorize the Ramayanam and sing for the people, he
found Kusa and Lava at his feet doing namaskaram in a muni vesham. Divine Mother Sita had taken refuge
at Sage Valmikis ashram and Kusa and Lava, the sons of Rama where growing up in the ashramam under
the care of Sage Valmiki.
Kusa and Lava knew their duty towards their Guru. They had acquired great fame, well versed in Vedas
and where gifted with musical voice. Sage Valmiki taught Sitayas Charitam Mahat the story of Sita and
Paulastya Vadham (death of Ravana) with an object of enlightening Kusa and Lava with the meaning of
Vedas. The two boys chanted Ramayanam, which was delightful to read. Ramayanam could be adapted
to slow, medium and fast pace, could be sung with proper rhythm and set to Saptaswaram. It was
characterized by nine sentiments like love, mirth, wrath, terror, heroism etc. Kusa and Lava, sang like
Gandharvas and knew the modulations in music. They were handsome and had auspicious marks on the
body. They looked like two Ramas sprung from Sri Rama. Having memorized the entire Ramayanam, Kusa
and Lava, who were devoted to virtue, and knew the real purpose of Vedas and Scriptures, sang
Ramayanam as they were instructed with mind fully concentrated in a gathering of Gurus, Brahmanas and
pious men.
One day, the two boys who were highly blessed and talented sang Ramayanam in an open assembly in
the presence of other sages. Seized with wonder upon hearing Ramayanam, the sages universally
applauded them. Though the events were of the past, the picture was vividly placed as if it is the present.
The boys sang in one voice entering into the spirit of Ramayanam. Pleased with the boys, the sages
presented items carried by sages such as Kamandalam, Deer Skin, Kusa Mat, Yagnopavitham etc. They
blessed the boys abundantly. They said It is conducive of long life, begets prosperity and ravishes the ears
and mind of all. One day Sri Rama saw the boys singing Ramayanam in the streets of Ayodhya and being
applauded by the people of Ayodhya. Bringing the two boys to his palace and warmly welcoming them, Sri
Rama requested the boys to sing Ramayanam in the presence of his whole family, ministers and others in
the royal court. Listen to the story which is of great consequence and conducive for our own wellbeing
said Sri Rama.
Urged by Sri Rama to sing, Kusa and Lava sang in Marga style of singing (singing in Sanskrit is called
Marga style). The sweet sound, the comfortable pitch sent a thrill and gladdened all men. Sri Rama
observed that the two boys were endowed with auspicious marks although they were dressed like munis.
Sri Rama gradually allowed his mind to be absorbed in the Ramayanam sung by Kusa and Lava with an
intent to experience the joy welling from it.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama! Rama! Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 5 Kusa Lava describe Ayodhya

This earth was ruled by kings starting from Vaivaswata Manu. Sagara was a descendant of Manu whose
sixty thousand sons excavated the ocean. This great story Ramayanam belongs to the descendants of
Ikswaku, the eldest son of Manu. We two, Kusa and Lava shall sing from the beginning in all its details the
whole story of Ramayanam which is conducive to piety, worldly prosperity and sense enjoyment along with
Moksham.
There is great region called Kosala extending along the banks of Sarayu River. It has a world renowned
city by name Ayodhya built by Vaivaswata Manu. It is a happy city, prosperous and full of abundant riches.
Ayodhya with its well aligned roads is ninety six miles long and twenty four miles wide. It is graced with
beautifully ramified extensive highway, which is sprinkled daily with water and with flowers dropped from
the heavens. King Dasaratha promoted the city making it more popular than Amaravati. It has an arched
gateway, beautiful doors, equipped with catapults, weapons and had all classes of craftsman. It is culturally
rich with panegyrists and bards. In all ways this city was most superior on the earth. King Dasaratha
repopulated the city with Brahmanas.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama! Rama! Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 6 Prosperity of Ayodhya

Raja Dasaratha protected his subjects. He was well versed in Vedas, loved by his people, farsighted,
glorious. An Atiratha of Ikswaku race, he was fond of performing Yagna, devoted to virtue, could control his
senses. Being a Maharishi, he enjoyed good reputation in all three worlds. He was strong and devoid of
foes. He had a number of allies. He was as prosperous as Indra and Kubera. His rule was comparable to
the rule of Manu. Raja Dasaratha was true to his word.
The people of Ayodhya were happy, virtuous, learned in scriptures, free from greed, truthful and contented
with their own fortune. All the men and women of Ayodhya were by nature virtuous, well regulated in life,
cheerful, faultless in character and were like Maharishis in their disposition.

na amRiShTo na aliptaa Ngo na asugandhaH cha vidyate
In that city none is there without his earrings, headgear, or garlands, none lacks in objects of
enjoyments, or misses his regular oil-baths. All apply sandalwood paste and perfume.
There is no one in Ayodhya that is not a nitya Agni hotri (maintains sacred fire and performs Yagna). No
Brahmana is found in Ayodhya that has not mastered the six branches of knowledge of the Vedas and does
not maintain pious vows. All four varnas lead by the Brahmanas worship God and honor the guests. They
are grateful, generous, heroic and powerful. They enjoy long life and are devoted to virtue and truth. Raja
Dasaratha protected Ayodhya on all sides. The city had refulgent warriors that have mastered the science
of archery. The city had high bred horses, elephants.
Ayodhya meaning unable to be attacked or defeated was thus ruled by Raja Dasaratha with its protective
gates and bars, graced with houses of various designs and inhabited by thousands of men.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 7 Eight Ministers of Raja Dasaratha

Raja Dasaratha had eight ministers. They were Dhrsti, Jayanta, Vijaya, Surastra, Rastravardhana, Akopa,
Dharmapala and Arthavit Sumantra. They were exceptionally high souled, knew how to weigh the pros and
cons of a problem, could read the mind of others and were ever devoted to Raja Dasaratha. Vasistha and
Vamadeva were the family priests. Additionally other priests included Suyajna, Jabali, Kasyapa, Gautama,
Markandeya and Katyayana. These Kula purohits were also functioning as counsellors to Raja Dasaratha.
The ministers were modest through learning, bashful by nature, clever, had fully controlled their senses,
were affluent, high souled, well versed in the use of weapons and possessed unbending prowess, glorious,
vigilant, true to their world, majestic, forgiving and far famed. They followed the scripture The time and
place of punishment as well as the age and capacity of the convict should be taken into consideration while
awarding punishment. As a result, there was no one that told a lie in Ayodhya, no wicked person, no
adultery. Ayodhya was perfectly tranquil.
The ministers were finely dressed and well adorned, were of holy resolve and the welfare of the king was
their sole purpose of their lives. Assisted by such ministers, priests and counsellors, Raja Dasaratha ruled
the whole earth while residing in Ayodhya.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 8 Aswamedha Yagnam Sankalpam

Raja Dasaratha had everything except a son. One day a thought came upon to him to do Aswamedha
Yagnam. After consulting with his ministers, he sent Sumantra to bring the family priests to get their advice.
Sumantra brought Suyajna, Vamadeva, Jabali, Kasyapa and Kula Purohit Vasistha. Raja Dasaratha made
a humble request to help him do the Aswamedha Yagnam as prescribed in the scriptures so that he can
get a son. The Brahmanas applauded the thought and blessed the desire. They ordered that all the prerequisites for the Yagnam be procured, the horse released and the sacrificial ground be prepared at the
northern banks of Sarayu.
The king ordered his ministers to get the required materials, send four hundred Kshatriyas with the horse
and a priest to offer havis to Agni at every place the horse conquers while trotting around the globe. He
ordered the grounds to be prepared and propitiatory rites done in accordance with the scriptures. The
Brahmanas and ministers then returned to their places. Raja Dasaratha then returned to his queens and
asked them to be ready to be a part of the Aswamedha Yagnam to get a son. The queens were very pleased
to hear the Kings sankalpam.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 9 Sanatkumaras Prophesy

Sumantra requests Raja Dasaratha to hear the Prophesy of Sanatkumara made in the presence of several
sages that he had heard. I have already heard that you will be doing the Aswamedha Yagnam and you will
be blessed with four sons. The legend I heard goes as follows: Sage Kasyapa has a son by name
Vibhandaka. He will beget a son by name Rsyasrnga. Constantly brought up in the woods and ignorant
about the rest of the world, he will know nothing but service to his father, Vibhandaka and sacred yagnam.
Rsyasrnga will be the ruler of Brahmanas and will observe both types of Brahmacharya. (Staying with a
guru and following the Brahmacharya, and being married and practice Brahmacharya by being with his wife
only on prescribed days as per the scriptures).
Romapada will be the king of Anga territory. Because of some transgression made by the king, there will
be a severe and fearful drought in that kingdom. He will call upon the Brahmanas and seek counsel to get
over the drought. The Brahmanas said Bring Rsyasrnga, the Brahmana highly learned in Vedas with due
respect and give your daughter Santa in marriage to him following the scripture. Pondering on how to bring
the young sage, the king will send his Kula Purohit and other Brahmanas to fetch the young sage. The
priests being afraid of the curse that will befall on them by Vibhandaka for luring away his son, will ask for
some time to think of a way to bring Rsyasrnga. They will then send courtesans to lure Rsyasrnga to the
kingdom. The minute Rsyasrnga steps into the kingdom, there will be heavy rains removing drought from
the kingdom. The king will then get his adopted daughter Santa (daughter of Dasaratha) married to
Rsyasrnga. Following the marriage, Rsyasrnga will pour havis into the Aswamedha Yagnam and bring sons
for Dasaratha. This is the Prophesy of Sanatkumara that I have heard in the past.
Raja Dasaratha was delighted to hear this from Sumantra and requested him to explain how Rsyasrnga
was lured into the kingdom of Romapada.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama! Rama! Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 10 Rsyasrnga marries Santa

Sumantra then began to tell Dasaratha in the presence of his ministers how Sage Rsyasrnga was lured
into the kingdom of Romapada. The Kula Purohit of Romapada said that Sage Rsyasrnga is unacquainted
with women and objects of senses and pleasures relating to them as he lives only in the woods engrossed
in the study of Vedas and service to his father. So, lets send beautifully adorned courtesans to lure him to
our kingdom. Receiving the royal command from the king and the Kula Purohit, the courtesans entered the
extensive forest and staying not very far from the sages hermitage in Srngaverapuram, they made attempts
to have a look at the Rishis son who was full of self-control and always stayed in the hermitage. Ever
content with his fathers care, the boy never stepped out of the hermitage. He never saw a man, a woman
or any other living being naturally seen in any town or countryside as he lived in the hermitage.
One day, impelled by providence, Rsyasrnga came out of his hermitage to the area where the courtesans
were camping and saw the lovely women singing melodiously. The courtesans approached him and
enquired who he was and what he was doing in this extensive lonely forest. Rsyasrnga was naturally
attracted to the courtesans and explaining that he was the son of Vibhandaka and that he was doing his
austerities nearby in a hermitage, he invited all of them to receive his hospitality at his hermitage. Unaware
that they are woman, Rsyasrnga offered them water to wash their hands and feet and offered fruits and
roots to eat. Accepting the hospitality, they decided to return swiftly being afraid of Vibhandakas curse if
he returned from his errand and saw this. In return the courtesans offered Modakam and Bhakshanam
saying that these are fruits and asked the sage to eat it without delay. On the way back each of them
hugged the sage and rushed back saying that they had to perform an austerity at some place.
After they left, Rsyasrnga felt uneasy at heart and was restless in agony. Thinking about them again and
again, the next day he went to the place where he had met them the previous day. Seeing the sage
approaching them, the courtesans humbly requested him to come to their hermitage. Hearing their prayer,
Rsyasrnga obliged. The courtesans took him on a boat on the Holy Ganga to the kingdom of Romapada.
Even as the holy sage was being escorted to the kingdom of Romapada, the god of rain sent down a shower
all of a sudden at that very time bringing joy to the world. Going forward to meet the sage who brought rain
synchronously, the king fell at the sages feet and did a shastanga namaskaram to the sage. Offering water
to wash his hands, the king begged the sage to grant him a boon that neither he nor his father should be
angry and curse him for bringing him away from his fathers hermitage. Later, the king took the sage to his
palace and following all scriptures gave his daughter Santa in marriage to the sage experiencing great joy
in the process. Sage Rsyasrnga then began to live in this palace with his wife Santa.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 11 Sage Rsyasrnga Comes to Ayodhya

Sumantra further continues to tell the legend he heard. This story was told in Satya Yuga by Sanat Kumara.
In the line of Ikswaku a highly pious and a glorious king by name Dasaratha will be born who will be true
to his promise. Friendship will develop between Dasaratha and Romapada. Dasaratha will approach
Romapada and request that Sage Rsyasrnga be sent to Ayodhya to perform a sacrifice so that he can get
sons that would propagate his race. Romapada will instantly part with his adopted daughter, Santa, his son
in law Rsyasrnga and Santas son. Taking the Brahmana with him, whose presence rids the agony of all,
Dasaratha will perform the Aswamedha Yagnam under the guidance of Rsyasrnga to obtain a son for
securing an abode in the heaven. As a result of the Yagnam, Dasaratha will get four sons possessed of
immense prowess, well known among all created beings, who will bring honor to their line. Sumantra
further advised Dasaratha to go personally with due ceremony to bring the Brahmana to Ayodhya.
Dasaratha was rejoiced to hear this from Sumantra. He consulted with Vasistha and with his consent, went
with his queens and ministers to Romapadas kingdom. Enroute he passed through the place where
Rsyasrnga grew up in the woods. Having reached Romapadas kingdom, Dasaratha saw Rsyasrnga Tejas
while he was seated next to Romapada. The king Romapada received Dasaratha with due worship and
offered worship to all who accompanied him. Romapada now introduced Rsyasrnga to Dasaratha and
informed Rsyasrnga that Santa was Dasarathas daughter and he had adopted Santa. Rsyasrnga in turn
offered prayers to Dasaratha. They stayed in Romapadas kingdom for seven or eight days and then
Dasaratha requested Romapada to send Santa, Rsyasrnga and their son to Ayodhya so that Rsyasrnga
can lead the Aswamedha Yagnam. Being obliged with the request, Dasaratha then returned to Ayodhya
with the Brahmana. He dispatched swift footed messengers to Ayodhya with instructions to decorate whole
of Ayodhya, sprinkle water, light agarbatti and adorn the city with thoranam. Overjoyed to hear the kings
orders, the citizens decorated the city as requested by the king. With Rsyasrnga walking ahead of him,
Raja Dasaratha entered Ayodhya amidst the auspicious sounds of conchs, kettle drums. The citizens were
happy to see Dasaratha return with Rsyasrnga. Dasaratha took Rsyasrnga to the palace after performing
due respects as per the scriptures and felt accomplished. The queens were over joyed to have Santa and
her son. Being treated with honor by the king, his queens and the citizens of Ayodhya, Rsyasrnga lived for
some time in Ayodhya.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 12 Dasaratha starts the preparations

After some time, when spring set in, Raja Dasaratha had the urge to seek blessings to start the preparations
for Aswamedha Yagnam. He fell at the feet of Rsyasrnga and sought his blessings to conduct the
Aswamedha Yagnam. Sage Rsyasrnga asked the king to start the preparations by letting the horse loose,
procure the requisites and prepare the sacrificial grounds on the banks of Sarayu River. Then, ordered by
Dasaratha, Sumantra brought in Brahmanas including Suyajna, Vamadeva, Jabali, Kasyapa and Vasistha.
Hearing the desire of the king and the blessing of Rsyasrnga, they also blessed Dasaratha and proclaimed
that he will get four sons.
The king requested that all preparations be made in accordance with the Shastras. He said that
Aswamedha Yagnam will yield its fruits and no transgression should be made as the demons are on the
lookout for such as opportunity to spoil the yagnam. He who undertakes a yagnam bereft of prescribed
procedures in the Shastras perishes. Therefore, care should be taken to get the preparations made in
accordance with the Shastras. Gaining support from all of them, Dasaratha returned to his palace.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 13 Dasaratha takes the Deeksha

A year after leaving the horse as a part of Aswamedha Yagnam, Raja Dasaratha called upon his Guru
Vasistha and Guru Matha Arundhati. He entrusted the whole responsibility of the Yagnam to Rishi Vasistha
so that it can be done in strict adherence to the scriptures. Sage Vasistha addressed a gathering of
Brahmins, Architects, Carpenters, servants, astronomers, artisans, actors, dancers, harikatha artists as
follows: Undertake your duties for the Aswamedha Yagnam. Prepare the Yagnashala with bricks, build
houses for royal attendees and people of all castes in accordance with their needs. Ensure that there is no
shortage of food and water. Build stables for horses and stalls for elephants, dormitories for the public.
Ensure that hospitality is given to all attendees with due honor. They approached Vasistha and said that
everything will be done as per his orders.
Sage Vasistha then summoned Sumantra and asked him to invite kings, Brahmanas, Vaisyas and Sudras
in thousands. Bring people from all lands with honor. Personally go and bring Rajarshi Janaka who is preordained to be Raja Dasarathas sambhandhi. Additionally personally bring the kings of Kashi, Kekayas,
Anga, Kosala, Maghada, Sindhusauvira and Saurastra. Go as an ambassador for Raja Dasaratha.
No gift should be made to anyone with disrespect or even with irreverence. A gift made with disrespect
brings ruin to the donor, there is no doubt out it.
Following the orders of Rishi Vasistha, Sumantra dispatched capable men to some kingdoms and
personally went to the places that Rishi Vasistha asked him to go. All others also reported the completion
of their assigned tasks to Vasistha in due course of time. Soon all the invited kings arrived with many
valuable gifts such as jewels, pearls, clothes, ornaments etc.
Rishi Vasistha and Rishi Rsyasrnga then requested Dasaratha to proceed to the Yagnashala to take the
Deeksha and start the proceedings. On an auspicious day Raja Dasaratha and his queens proceeded to
the Yagnashala. He made Rishi Rsyasrnga as the lead priest followed by Rishi Vasistha and others and
following all the Shastras and all Vidhis prescribed in the scriptures, took the Deeksha on the same day.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 14 Papa Vimochanam

The horse returned after a year and the Aswamedha Yagnam started on the northern banks of Sarayu.
Under the supervision of Rsyasrnga, three priests Hota, Adhwaryu and Udgata did the Aswamedha
Yagnam following the procedures laid down in the Kalpa Sutras namely Mimamsa Shastra, Pravargya, an
act of pouring hot milk into a heated vessel called Gharma, and Upasada Isti. Additionally they also
performed all other rites as stated in the scriptures. Soma is a kind of herb that drives away all sin. Its juice
was extracted three times as day as per the Vidhis. Rsyasrnga and the other Brahmins chanted the
Mantras purely invoking all the Gods to the Yagnam.
All the Brahmins present there were well versed in scriptures and in the six branches of knowledge auxiliary
to the Vedas namely Siksa or Phonetics, Vyakarana or Grammar, Chandas or Pattern of Rhythm, Nirukta
or knowledge of origin of words and its changes over time, Jyothisha or Astronomy, and Kalpa or the
science of scriptures. The guests that attended were honored and there was no lack of food and hospitality.
A place for sacrifice was built with six pillars of Bilva wood, Khadira, Palasa, Slesmataka and Himalayan
cedar wood. Two Himalayan cedar wood pillars needed for Aswamedha Yagnam were set 6 feet apart as
per the scriptural ordinance. There were a total of Twenty one pillars in the height prescribed in the
scriptures. All the pillars were plated with gold and adorned with pieces of cloth. The pillars were worshipped
with Chandanam and flowers.
The Yagna mantapam was built with the bricks as in the scriptures. There were eighteen homam pits made
of bricks. The mantapam shape resembled Garuda with his wings. The Brahmins performed all the pujas
and had the mantapam ready for Dasaratha. All the sacrificial animals were ready and tied to the pillars.
In accordance with the procedure for Aswamedha Yagnam, the horse that returned after a year was purified
with water and Kausalya gave three strokes with a sword. She then spent one night with the dead horse
with a composed mind. The four principal priests then made the remaining two wives come in contact with
the dead horse.
Taking out the edible piece of tuber known as Aswakanda, Rsyasrnga cooked it in the homam fire in
accordance with the scriptures. At an auspicious time, the king smelt the odor of the tuber thereby getting
Papa Vimochanam. Inhaling this smell drove away the sin that was preventing him from having a son.
The sixteen priests that were also a part of the ceremony then offered things into the homam as per the
scriptures by placing the items on mats of cane. As per the Kalpa Sutras the yagnam was performed for
three days named as Catustoma, Ukthya and Atiratha. Many other secondary homams were then
performed bringing the event to a conclusion. At the end of the yagnam, Dasaratha gave away his eastern
part of the kingdom to Hota, western to Adhwaryu, Southern to a Brahmana and Northern to Udgata. He
gave away the entire bhoomi to the priests that did the yagnam for him. Later the priests returned the
kingdom to Dasaratha saying that he is the best person to rule and in turn accepted cows, and coins. The
Brahmins gave the wealth to Rsyasrnga and Vasistha who then spilt the wealth among all.
Raja Dasaratha was very pleased at the successful completion of his Aswamedha Yagnam and did
shastanga namaskaram to Rsyasrnga asking him to do the needful to beget a male child that could transport
him to heaven. Rsyasrnga blessed the king and said that he will get four sons that will propagate his race
making Dasaratha extremely happy.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 15 Bhagavan Vishnu Sankalpam

Having deeply thought, Rsyasrnga said that he will do Putra Kama Isti Yagnam with the mantras prescribed
in the Atharva Vedam. The Rishi then began the Putra Kama Isti Yagnam by offering Ghee into the homam
along with other homam samagri. As a practice in that Yuga, the Gods including Brahma, Shiva, Indra and
all Gandharvas, Yakshas, Kinnaras, Siddhas etc. assembled there to accept the Havis in person. The
aforesaid celestials that assembled at the Yagnam approached Brahma and vented their troubles. Due to
the boon Brahma had given Ravana in the past, he was harassing the three worlds. The sun does not
scorch even in mid-summer, wind does not blow past him and the oceans turbulent waves stay calm in his
fear. They requested Brahma to think of a way to put an end to Ravanas tyranny.
Brahma pondered for a while and said he found a way to get Ravana killed. Ravana only wished that he
does not meet with death by Gandharvas, Yakshas, Devas or Rakshasas and I gave him that wish.
However, he did not say man. So, only a man can kill him. While the celestials now rejoiced having found
a way out, on the Garuda Vahanam, with a Shanka, Chakra, Gada, wearing a Pitambharam, Jagannathan
Bhagavan Vishnu arrived.
Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!
The celestials now prayed to Bhagavan Vishnu, cried out the atrocities of Ravana and asked Bhagavan
Vishnu to take Avirbhavam as Dasarathas four sons and help them get rid of Ravana. They did saranagathi
to Bhagavan Vishnu.
Bhagavan Vishnu blessed the gathering Give up your fear. Subham. In the battlefield I will destroy Ravana
along with all his extended family and ministers. I shall remain on earth ruling it for eleven thousand years.
Having given this boon, Bhagavan Vishnu considered Ayodhya as his Janma Bhoomi. He split himself into
four and did a sankalpam to have Dasaratha as his father.
The celestials including Rudra and Brahma now did a Stuti on Bhagavan Vishnu and said after destroying
Ravana and relieving the anxiety of your devotees come back to Vaikuntham.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 16 Dasaratha Receives Divya Payasam

Sriman Narayana addressed the gathering of celestials and asked what he should do. They revealed to
Bhagavan that Ravana did not consider man as a worthy creature and hence left man out while making a
wish to Brahma. So, Bhagavan should take the form of a man and end Ravanas tyranny.
Accepting their request, Bhagavan disappeared from there. Simultaneously the mantram that specifically
invokes a son was being recited in the Putra Kama Isthi yagnam. Suddenly in the homam, a divine celestial,
radiant, wearing red clothes appeared holding a golden basin with Paal Payasam covered with a silver
plate.
Receiving him with full honor Dasaratha prayed to him. The celestial said that he was a messenger of
Bhagavan Vishnu and this payasam was made by the God's. He asked Dasaratha to give it to his wives.
Dasaratha took the payasam and did a pradakshinam to the celestial.
Then after the end of the yagnam, Dasaratha gave half the payasam to Kausalya. From another half, he
split half and gave to Sumitra. Again from the left over half he gave half to Kaikeyi and the last half to
Sumitra again.
Soon, the queens felt the presence of the divine sons in their womb. The whole palace was radiant with
their tejas.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 17 Vanaras take birth

Now that Bhagavan Vishnu took the sankalpam to be born as a man, Brahma ordered the gods to get
offsprings capable of assuming any form and assist Vishnu. Through the celestials like Apsaras,
Gandharvas, Yakshas, Nagas, Vidyadharas, Kinnaras beget vanaras equal in strength to you, well versed
in warfare, swift as wind, experts in policy, intelligent, skilled in the use of missiles. Jambhavan, the bear
already took birth from my yawn.
Following the command of Brahma, the gods begot vanaras. Indra got Vali, Surya got Sugriva, Brihaspati
got Tara, Kubera got Gandhamadana, Vishwakarma got Nala, Agni got Nila, Ashwini kumaras got Mainda
and Dwivida, Varuna got Susena, Parjanya got Sarabha, and Vayu got Hanuman. Hanuman is the cleverest
and strongest among all vanaras.
Crores of Vanaras were thus gotten. They were mighty, could take any form they wanted, could go where
ever they wanted and were ever ready for battle with Ravana. Thus bears, monkeys and long tailed
monkeys were gotten in no time. They used rocks as missiles and had claws and teeth as their weapons.
Many assembled in Mount Rksavan under the leadership of Vali, Sugriva, Hanuman, Nala and Neel. The
rest of the monkeys gathered around the country in various mountains. Thus the vanaras were born ready
to assist Bhagavan Vishnu.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 18 Prodyamaane Jagannaatham Sarva

Loka Namaskrutam
The celestials returned after receiving their share of havis in the Putra Kama Isti Yagnam and Aswamedha
Yagnam. All the assembled kings returned to their kingdoms after the end of the Yagnam fully satisfied. In
due course of time Rishi Rsyasrnga and his wife Santa also returned to their kingdom. Raja Dasaratha was
now eagerly awaiting the birth of his sons.
In the meantime, six seasons, each consisting of two months went by after the Yagnam was completed.
On the Chaitra Sukla Navami, during Punarvasu Nakshatram, when Surya, Angara, Sani, Guru and Sukra
appeared in Mesa, Makara, Tula, Karkataka and Mina Rashi respectively, when Guru was in conjunction
with Chandra, Kausalya gave birth to Sri Rama (Prodyamaane Jagannaatham Sarva Loka
Namaskrutam), ordained with divine auspicious marks who represented one half of Vishnu.
Next Bharata who represented a quarter of Vishnu was born of Kaikeyi. Lakshmana and Satrughna both
representing a sixth of Vishnu were born of Sumitra after two days. Bharata was born in Pushya Nakshatram
during Meena Lagnam. Sumitras sons were born in Aslesha Nakshatram at noon when Sun reached
Kartakata Rashi.

The Gandharvas sang, the apsaras danced, the Devas sounded kettledrums, the citizens of Ayodhya
rejoiced. There were Vedic chanting, singing by bards and panegyrists simultaneously. Raja Dasaratha
gifted everyone and gave cows to Brahmanas.
When Rama was thirteen days old and Lakshmana and Satrughna were eleven days old Sage Vasistha
named the boys. From time to time Sage Vasistha performed Jatakarma, Upanayanam and educated the
boys in Vedas. Lakshmana was inseparable to Rama and Satrughna to Bharata.
Now that the education was complete. Raja Dasaratha was in an assembly discussing the boys marriage
with Sages Vasistha, Vamadeva and King Romapada. The guards came and informed that Brahmarishi
Vishwamitra, the son of Gadhi was at the door. Raja Dasaratha received the Brahmarishi will due honors
as prescribed in the scriptures. Brahmarishi made enquiries about the welfare of the kingdom. Raja
Dasartha expressed his gratitude and said that his birth stands fulfilled and his life is blessed today by the
arrival of the Brahmarishi.
adya me saphalam janma jiivitam ca su jiivitam
Dasaratha further promised that he will fulfill whatever Brahmarishi Vishwamitra wanted and asked the
reason for the holy visit.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 19 Brahmarishi asks Rama

Hearing the warm welcome from Dasaratha, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra spoke as follows: Your words are
befitting your dynasty and are not a surprise for one with a Kula Guru like Vasistha. I shall say what my
concern is and being truthful to your promise take the decision. I am doing a Yagnam for a Siddhi and two
asuras by name Subaahu and Mareecha are causing obstacle to that Yagnam. At the end of the Yagnam,
they are pouring meat and blood into the homam. Having taken the Yagna Deeksha, I cannot get angry or
curse anyone. So I had to come to you.
Therefore Raja, spare Rama whose valor is his truthfulness. He has the capability of eradicating the
demons that are disrupting the Yagnam and Rama will be protected by me. I will accord many blessings on
Rama by which he will acquire fame in the three worlds. Except for Raghava, no one else can control them.
I have recognized who Rama is. It is unapt for you to show your paternal apprehension. Not only me, Rishi
Vasistha and other Rishis here know who Rama is in reality. For your own fame, give Rama to me for ten
days. Feel free to seek counsel of Vasistha and other ministers present here. By taking a favorable decision
you can help save my Yagnam.
Raja Dasaratha shuddered in fear and lost consciousness. After regaining consciousness he found himself
battling between his mind and heart and sat on the throne disturbed.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 20 Dasaratha Declines

Upon hearing the Rishis request, Dasaratha says that Rama is less than sixteen years of age. He has no
experience in war. Instead, I will come with my Akshowhinis Senna and personally guard your yagnam.
Rama does not know the strengths and weaknesses of war opponents nor does he know the use of arsenal.
If you are particular that Rama has to go, then I along with my Chatur Angam (chariots, elephants, cavalry
and soldiers) will come along. I am sixty thousand years old and Rama being the eldest is the crown prince.
Hence I cant send Rama. By the way who are their demons and what is their lineage?
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra replied Born in Pulatsya Vamsham there is a Rakshasa named Ravana. He is
empowered with boons from Brahma and tortures all creatures. He is the brother of Kubera and son of
Sage Vishravasa. Instigated by him, Mareecha and Subhahu are creating the havoc.
Hearing this from the Brahmarishi, Dasaratha got even more disturbed and said I myself cannot defeat
Ravana with my entire army, how can Rama handle them? Devas, Asuras, Gandharvas, Yakshas,
Pannagaahs cannot defeat him, what to say of humans? Mareecha and Subhahu are like Yama. There is
no way I can spare my son!
Brahmarishi Vishwamitras expressions looked like one in anger upon hearing these words from Dasaratha.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 21 Satguru Satsangam

Hearing Dasarathas denial, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra said Having first promised to give me what I want,
you now want to go back on your word? This breach of promise is unworthy of Raghu Kulam and will prove
to ruin this race. If this is bearable to you, I shall return as I came without Rama. With your promise falsified,
remain at ease in the midst of your relations. With Brahmarishi seized in fury, the earth shook and fear
gripped the Devas. Perceiving this, Kula Guru, Satguru Vasistha spoke to Dasaratha as follows:
Being born in the race of Ikswakus, who are known for firmness and observing excellent vows, you should
not abandon righteousness in the form of fidelity of your words. You should not embrace adharma in the
form of breach of promise. You have once solemnly declared that you will do whatever the Brahmarishi
asked. So send Rama with him. The Rakshasas will not be able to overpower Rama whether he knows
warfare or not as long as Rama is under the protective shield of Brahmarishi Vishwamitra.
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra is piety incarnate and foremost of those endowed with prowess. He is superior in
learning and is a great repository of asceticism. He knows the use of different types of missiles. In all the
three worlds, no one knows him other than me. All the missiles where sons of Krusaswa and were gifted to
Vishwamitra by Bhagavan Shiva. The sons of Krusaswa, born of the daughters of Daksha Prajapathi, were
possessed of varied forms, endowed with extraordinary prowess, full of splendor and brought victory to
Vishwamitra when he employed them in his service. Jaya and Suprabha, daughters of Daksha gave birth
to a hundred effulgent missiles and weapons. Of these Jaya secured a boon and gave birth to fifty excellent
sons, possessed of infinite glory and devoid of form, for the destruction of Asuric forces. Suprabha too
brought forth fifty more sons, hard to overpower, difficult to assail and collectively known as Samharas.
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, not only knows the use of these missiles, but is capable of evolving new ones.
Nothing relating to the past or future is unknown to the Brahmarishi with regards to Dharma. He is highly
renowned and exceptionally glorious. You should not entertain any doubts about sending Rama with him.
Though capable of punishing the Rakshasas himself, he has sought Rama as a loan for doing good for
Rama.
From the satsangam of Satguru, Dasaratha felt rejoiced and mentally accepted sending Rama with
Vishwamitra.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 22 Bala Athi Bala Mantropadesam

Delighted by the guidance from his Satguru, Dasaratha personally invited Rama and Lakshmana. Kausalya
first blessed Rama, following which Dasaratha smelled the crown of Rama as a token of affection, blessed
him. Vasistha chanted some Vedic mantras and then Dasaratha committed Rama and Lakshmana to
Brahmarishi Vishwamitras care. The wind blew delightful breeze and just as Rama started behind
Vishwamitra the heavens showered flowers and sounded celestial drums and conchs accompanying the
kettle drums and celebrations at Ayodhya. Lakshmana followed Rama. They were following Brahmarishi
Vishwamitra by their heels (walking very fast) carrying their bows, wearing royal jewelry and clothes.
Having walked twelve miles along the Sarayu River, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra asked Rama to do Sandhya
Vandanam and do Achamanam to receive the Bala and Athi Bala Mantram. By going Japam of Bala and
Athi Bala Mantram, one does not feel fatigue, does not get fever, beauty is not lost in old age, Rakshasas
cannot overpower in sleep or when one is careless.
O Rama, none will be a match to you in the three worlds either in good fortune or prowess of wisdom,
judgment, intellect or counter arguments. They dispel hunger and thirst, they are the source of all wisdom.
Doing Achamanam, Rama along with Lakshmana received the Bala and Athi Bala Mantropadesam from
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra. Then Brahmarishi taught Rama all the duties one owes to a teacher and they
spent that delightful night on the banks of Sarayu sleeping on a Darbha under the fondling care of
Brahmarishi.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 23 Kausalya Supraja Rama Purva

Sandhya Pravartate Uttistha Nara Shaardula Kartavyam Daiva maahnikam
As dawn approached, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra spoke as follows to Rama and Lakshmana sleeping on the
Darbha.
Kausalya Supraja Rama Purva Sandhya Pravartate
Uttistha Nara Shaardula Kartavyam Daiva maahnikam
Fortunate is Kausalya to beget you as her son Rama; get up oh, tiger among men, eastern aurora
is emerging, daytime tasks towards gods are to be performed
Hearing this gentle wake up by Brahmarishi, Rama and Lakshmana, got up, did their Sandhya Vandanam
and Gayatri Japam, Brahma Yajna which includes reciting some texts from the Vedas and then did
namaskaram to the Brahmarishi and were now ready to continue the so journey. While moving forward,
they sighted Pavitra Ganga which has its confluence with Sarayu at this region. There they saw the holy
hermitages of Rishis that have been doing Tapas for thousands of years. Being extremely delighted to see
the holy hermitage, Rama and Lakshmana asked Brahmarishi, Oh Bhagavan, Whose Ashram is this? Who
lives here? We are curious to know.
Brahmarishi replied This is Bhagavan Shivas hermitage. Once when Shiva was in Tapas, Kandarpa, also
known as Kama Deva tried to disturb Shiva by releasing his arrows of love. With a HUM sound produced
by Shiva and with the opening of his third eye, Shiva burnt Kandarpa who was once with a form. It was then
that Kandarpa body became ashes and he became to be known as Ananga, one without a body. This
territory was then called Anga in lieu of this incident. Shivas disciples are practicing Tapas here. They are
devoted to piety and no sin exists here. Let us purify ourselves with bath and spend the night here in the
confluence of Ganga and Sarayu.
The sages present in the hermitage, welcomed Vishwamitra and his two disciples and offered Water to
wash their feet and hands. After receiving all the hospitality, they spent the night there while Vishwamitra
was telling delightful stories to Rama and Lakshmana.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 24 Origin of Sarayu River

The next morning, after Brahmarishi Vishwamitra finished his morning puja, the sages arranged for a boat
for the Brahmarishi followed by Rama and Lakshmana. They started their journey at an auspicious time.
Sitting on the boat, they were crossing Pavitra Ganga. Reaching the middle of the stream, Rama heard
distinctive noises caused by the striking of waves against each other. Being curious, Rama asked
Brahmarishi what the tumultuous noise was. The Brahmarishi replied On Mount Kailasam, Brahma created
a lake by his mind called Manasa Lake. This Sarayu River originated from that lake and is holy. It encircles
Ayodhya except for the south. This tumultuous sound is being caused by the confluence of Sarayu with
Jahnavi (Ganga). Do namaskaram at this sacred spot.
After Rama and Lakshmana did a namaskaram at the Sarayu and Ganga Sangamam, they proceeded on
their onward journey keeping up with the quick pace of Vishwamitra. They reached a terrible forest
uninhabited by men and heavily invested with fierce beasts, vultures, birds uttering fierce cries and difficult
to pass through. Rama, questioned Brahmarishi what this forest was. The Sage replied There were two
prosperous kingdoms called Malada and Karusa in this spot at one time. When Indra was struck with
Brahma Hatya Papam for killing Vritra, the Rishis and Devas bathed Indra with Ganga at this spot relieving
him from the Brahma Hatya Papam. In turn Indra blessed these two cities with prosperity. For a long time,
these two cities were very prosperous.
Now, a Yaksha by name Tataka, that has the might of a thousand elephants lives in this region, her body
stretching over twelve miles. She is the wife of Sunda and mother of Maricha. She is a wicked women and
that is the reason no one goes into this forest any more. Take it as my order and kill Tataka. Make this
region holy as before.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 25 Go Braahmana Hita Arthaaya

Hearing the order of Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Rama asked how a Yaksha, a lady who is generally weak
got the strength of a thousand elephants. Brahmarishi said that she was born to Suketu as a result of his
Tapas. Being pleased with the Tapas, Brahma gave Tataka as a daughter to Suketu. Thus she was blessed
with the strength of a thousand elephants. She was very pleasing and charming in her youth as a blessing
from Brahma. Following the tradition of marriage between a Yaksha and a Rakshasa, Suketu gave her in
marriage to Sunda through whom she got Maricha, a Rakshasa who survives on raw flesh.
Sunda was killed by Sage Agastya because of a curse. Tataka and Maricha rushed towards Agastya to kill
him. It was then that Sage Agastya cursed Tataka to become a Rakshasa and loose her charming
appearance.
For the sake of Cows and Brahmins, go braahmana hita arthaaya kill Tataka who is evil. None other than
you can kill Tataka. Being a Kshatriya, it is your duty for the sake of the four varnas to protect them from
evil. No harm will befall you by killing this wicked women. Indra killed Manthara, daughter of Virochana, son
of Prahlada when she tried to destroy the earth. The wife of Bhrigu was killed by Vishnu as heard in the
Matsya Purana when she tried to destroy the Devas. Women characterized with evil were killed by
Kshatriyas before. Therefore, shake off the doubt that she is a women and kill her Rama.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 26 Pitur Vachana Nirdeshaat Pitur

Vachana Gauravaat
Hearing the words of Vishwamitra, Rama said Pitur Vachana Nirdeshaat Pitur Vachana Gauravaat My
father said in the assembly of Gurus and ministers that your order should be carried out. Therefore, I shall
kill Tataka thereby protecting the Cows, Brahmins and the citizens of my land and for the sake of honoring
your command, I shall kill Tataka.
Then, Rama made a twang with his bow producing sharp resounding noise. The rakshasas and Tataka
were terrified at the noise. As Tataka approached Rama, Rama addressed Lakshmana and said her form
is so scary that normal people would die seeing her. I shall cut her ears and tip of the nose, her hands and
legs making her mobile so that she cant cause any more destruction. Even as Rama was talking, Tataka
rushed towards Rama and Lakshmana. Brahmarishi did HUM to the Rakshasi and wished the boys
victory. For an hour or so, she raised a lot of dust on the boys by throwing rocks. Rama then cut of her arms
and legs as she came rushing towards him. Lakshmana cut of her ears and tip of the nose. She then
disappeared using her maya and started throwing rocks at the boys. Seeing that Tataka was resorting to
Maya and fighting, Vishwamitra addressed Rama that she should be killed before sunset as Rakshasis
gain power in the night. Estimating her location based on the sound, Rama intercepted her rocks. When
she was thus attacked, she came pouncing towards Rama who then struck an arrow and killed her.
Indra and the Devas now showed up to congratulate Rama. They then prayed to Vishwamitra to impart the
knowledge of missiles presided over by the sons of Krusaswa to Rama. Saying so, all the Devas
disappeared. Lovingly smelling the crown of Rama, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra said they should spend the
night here and proceed to his ashram tomorrow. That forest instantly turned into a delightful grove and they
spent a peaceful night.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 27 Rama Receives Divya Astrams

Brahmarishi Vishwamitra was extremely pleased with Rama. The next day morning, after finishing the
morning rituals as per the scriptures, Brahmarishi said I am extremely pleased with you. I shall impart the
knowledge of all the Astrams whereby you will be able to conquer in battle all your enemies on earth,
Devas, Asuras, Gandharvas and Nagas. These are powerful and supremely beneficent Astrams capable
of taking any form at will. Then facing east, Brahmarishi started imparting a series of Mantrams for each
missile to both Rama and Lakshmana. As and when he imparted the mantram, the Astram showed up in
its Divine form and stood at Ramas command. After Brahmarishi finished imparting all the Mantrams they
said they are ready to carry out Ramas command. Rama accepted them cheerfully, stroked them and said

you, appear in my mind and render assistance to me in times of emergency. They did a pradakshinam to
Rama and disappeared.
Then, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Rama and Lakshmana continued their journey. Rama sited a cluster of
trees not far from a nearby mountain. It was pleasing to sight, soul ravishing, full of deer and graced with
various species of chirping birds. Rama addressed the Brahmarishi and said looks like we have come out
of the haunted place of Tataka. Whose hermitage is this? Where is your hermitage where I should guard
against the Rakshasas? Please let me know.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 29 Siddhashramam

When Rama enquired about the Siddhashramam, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra replied that Bhagavan Vishnu
had spent several Yugams at this place practicing Tapas and Yoga. This is also the hermitage where
Bhagavan in the form of Vamana practiced Tapas and Yoga. This is called Siddhashramam because Sage
Kasyapa attained his siddhi here.
When Bhagavan Vishnu was practicing his Tapas and Yoga in this Siddhashramam, Bali was the king and
had conquered the three worlds. Once when Bali was conducting a Yagnam, all the Devas came here and
sought the help of Vishnu. They informed that Bali has taken a vow to give whatever anyone asks in that
Yagnam. So Bhagavan Vishnu should take the form of Vamana, approach him and help the Devas with his
Vishnu Maya.
While the Devas were making this request, Kasyapa Muni and Aditi came there. Kasyapa did a Stuti of
Bhagavan Vishnu and did saranagathi. Bhagavan Vishnu asked Kasyapa to ask for a boon. Kasyapa asked
that Bhagavan Vishnu fulfill the wish of Aditi in having Bhagavan Vishnu as her son and also help the Devas
from Bali. Let this Ashram be called Siddhashramam and begin your Vamana avataram from here.
Bhagavan Vishnu then came out of Aditi as a Vamana and approached Bali at his Yagnam. When Bali
asked to make a wish, Bhagavan Vishnu asked for three strides of land and conquered the three worlds.
Bhagavan then gave Indra his kingdom.
This Ashram is Bhagavan Vishnus and is the eradicator of stress and strain caused by evil on earth or the
stress of going through cycle of birth and death. This Ashram grants Moksham and that is the reason I am
doing my Yagnam here.
Rakshasas are coming to this Ashram with evil pursuit and have to be stopped. Rama, this Ashram belongs
to you. We are now going to the Siddhashramam.
As they approached the Siddhashramam, the munis there rushed and did Guru Puja to Brahmarishi
Vishwamitra, and puja to Rama and Lakshmana, honoring them as guests. After taking rest for a
muhurtham (a brief period), Rama did namaskaram to Brahmarishi Vishwamitra and said Please take the
Yagna Deeksha today itself and start the Yagnam following which Brahmarishi Vishwamitra took the
Deeksha.
After spending the night vigilantly, Rama and Lakshmana got up early, finished Sandhya Vandanam and
started guarding the Agni lit in the Yagnam by Brahmarishi Vishwamitra who started the Yagnam.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 30 Guru Vachanam

Rama asked Brahmarishi Vishwamitra at what time Subhahu and Mareecha are expected so that they can
be ready. Pleased by this question, the munis present there responded that Brahmarishi has already taken
the Deeksha which means he is maintaining Maunitvam (Silence) and hence will not talk until the end of
the Deeksha. Starting from today, the Yagnam has to be guarded for six days and night as the Rakshasas
can come at any time.
Rama and Lakshmana guarded the Yagnam continuously for six days. On the sixth day, when the Soma
juice from the Yagnam is to be extracted, Rama said to Lakshmana be prepared and vigilant. Even as
Rama was saying this the Agni from the Yagnam flared up high all of a sudden indicating that the evil forces
are here by surrounding Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, and the items being used for the Yagnam namely
Darbha, Camasa, Sruk, pieces of firewood and heaps of flowers.
While the Mantras where still going on there was a loud and fearful noise in the sky. Mareecha and
Subhahu came with their army and using their Rakshasi Maya started pouring blood, pus, flesh etc. into
the Yagnam. Rajeevalochana Rama spoke briefly to Lakshmana, and said I will scatter these Rakshasas
that feed on raw flesh by means of Manavastram. I dont feel inclined to kill Mareecha. So saying Rama
released the Manavastram. Forcibly hit by the Manavastram, Mareecha flew a hundred yoganas (800 miles)
and was flung to mid ocean. Seeing Mareecha struck by the force of Sitesu (Manavastram), Rama said to
Lakshmana that he will get rid of the remaining Rakshasas that arrived here to attack.
Using the Aagneya astram, Rama killed Subhahu. Then, using the Vaayavya Astram, Rama dispersed all
the other Rakshasas that came with Mareecha and Subhahu. All the munis applauded Rama for the victory.
At the end of the Yagnam, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra seeing that the Siddhashramam was now rid of pests,
felt grateful that Rama has kept the honor of his Gurus word and proclaimed by his actions that this is
indeed a Siddhashramam. Soon, it was time for Sandhya Vandanam and Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Rama
and Lakshmana went for Sandhya Vandanam.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 31 Dhanur Yagnam

Having spent the night at the Siddhashramam, the next day, Rama and Lakshmana approached
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra after finishing their morning duties of Sandhya Vandanam. Doing Namaskaram,
Rama asked what are the orders for us from the Brahmarishi. Hearing this, the Rishis present there said
with the permission of Brahmarishi as follows We are going to Mithila to see the Dhanur Yagnam being
conducted by the king of Mithila. You should join us and come and see this adbhutha Dhanas that was
given to the king of Mithila by Shiva after the king performed a Yagnam as a gift. No one can gauze the
size and weight of it. Many celestials have tried to bend it but failed. It is highly revered and receives puja
regularly with various kings of sandalwood pastes and incense.
Now Brahmarishi took a farewell from the deities of the Siddhashramam and proceed north towards the
Himalayas on the northern bank of Ganga. The Vedic sages followed him with a hundred carts filled with
materials used in Yagnam along with Rama and Lakshmana. Even herds of beats and flocks of birds
followed the Brahmarishi for some time and were later sent back by the Brahmarishi.
Having covered a long distance, as the sun was setting, they paused for the night on the banks of Sona
River. They did the evening Sandhya Vandanam and Yagnam and gathered around Brahmarishi. Seeing
the thriving forest on the banks, Rama, being curious prayed to Brahmarishi to explain what this land was
that was thriving so well.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 32 Sons of Kusa and his Grand
daughters
Once there lived a holy sage, called Kusa, born of Brahma. Through his wife Vidarbha, he got four sons
named Kusamba, Kusanabha, Asurtarajasa and Vasu. The sons were brilliant, had a great zeal
(enthusiastic), pious and veracious (spoke the truth). One day Kusa told his sons, being Kshatriyas your
duty is to protect people and through this act you will earn undiminished merit. They then laid four
foundations for four cities:

Kusamba known for glory built Kausambi

Kusanabha known for piety built Mahodaya, known as Kannauja now
Asutarajasa built Dharmaranya
Vasu built Girivraja, known as Rajgir now. His capital was named Vasumati. Five hills surround the
city adding to its splendor. The beautiful river Sona, spreads its charm like a garland in the midst
of the five prominent hills. It flows from the west into the territory of Magadha, known as Magadhi.
This holy Magadhi, O Rama, which flows in the eastern direction is lined with charming fields on
both sides and is thus adorned with rows of crops and is connected to Vasu.

The royal sage Kusanabha, was very righteous had a hundred daughters who were very pretty. They would
dress up beautifully and enjoy themselves in the royal gardens singing, dancing and playing. One day Vayu
Deva got mesmerized seeing their youthful beauty and asked to marry them. He said you can retain your
youth for eternity by being my wedded wives as youth goes away quickly in human beings.
Hearing the proposal, the girls said in the form life breath, you move inside all living beings. We are aware
of your glory. We are the daughters of Kusanabha. We can curse you for this act, but we do not want to
use our Tapas Shakti for cursing you. Let that hour never come in our lives when we select our own groom
out of lust disregarding our father. Our father is our master, our God. Only our father will select a groom for
us.
Angered by this statement, Vayu Deva entered their limbs and distorted them. Perturbed and crying, the
daughters returned to their father. Kusanabha asked how did this happen? Who made you hunch back?
Why are you all making only gestures and not uttering a single word? Have I violated Dharma for this to
happen? Saying this Kusanabha waited for the response.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya.
Mahabharatam refers to Dharmaranya and encompasses a sacred forest with the same name. This
represents the tract lying round Gaya. The lake Brahmasarovara is in the township of Gaya. Pitru Karyam
is done in Dharmaranya as stated in Mahabharatam. The names of the five hills mentioned above are also
given in Mahabharatam namely Vipula, Varaha, Vrsabha, Rsigiri also called Matanga and Caityaka.

kSamaa yashaH kSamaa dharmaH kSamaayaam jagat vi Sthitam

Upon hearing their father, the hundred daughters of Kusanabha touched his feet and said Vayu Deva
made an improper approach. We told him that our father will decide our groom. He tried to bribe us and
then harmed us.
On hearing these words, Kusanabha, said kSamaa daanam kSamaa satyam kSamaa yashaH kSamaa
dharmaH kSamaayaam jagat vi Sthitam. Forgiveness is a virtue and you have upheld our family honor by
not cursing Vayu Deva. Forgiveness is an adornment for women (alankaaraH hi naariiNaam) and the
patience you showed is indeed applaudable. Grace is altruism (selfless concern for the well-being of
others), grace is ritualism, oh, my daughters, grace is glory, grace is virtue, and this universe is verily
abiding in graciousness alone for grace itself is the truth, isn't it!' Thus king Kusanabha said to his daughters
and sent them away.
After sending his daughters away, the king called an assembly to discuss his daughters marriage. During
this time, there was a Sage by name Culi who was practicing strict Vedic Rituals. While he was practicing
Vedic Rituals, Celestial Urmilas daughter Somada was serving him. After the rituals were done, one day
Culi asked Somada to ask for a boon for her service. She said, O Rishi, you have realized Brahman. May
I get a son that is righteous, spiritual, knows the Vedas and is like you Through his yogic power
Brahmadatta was born. King Brahmadatta ruled Kampilyaam with grandeur.
Kusanabha now decided to get his daughters married to Brahmadatta and arranged the marriage. As and
when Brahmadatta took each daughters hand into his hand for Pani Grahanam a part of marriage, they
got their beautiful form back. Kusanabha was very pleased and Brahmadatta left with all his wives back to
his kingdom. Somada, Brahmadattas mother was proud of her sons noble deed in curing his wives and
welcomed them home as they were touching her feet during Gruha Pravesham. She thanked Kusanabha
for giving such nice daughter-in-laws.

After Brahmadatta left, Kusanabha performed a Putra Kama Isti Yagnam to get a son. While the yagnam
was going on, Kusa, the son of Brahma and the father of Kusanabha, appeared and made this prophesy
A most pious son, worthy of you, will be born to you. He will be known as Gadhi and you will have eternal
glory in this world. So saying, Kusa left to Satyaloka (Brahmalokam). After some time Gadhi, my father
was born. Being born in that line I am called Kausika. I had an elder sister named Satyavati who was
married to Rcika.
Following her husband, my sister ascended to heaven following her husband and then turned into a
beautiful river, Kausiki, now known as Kosi and flows by the side of Himalayas conferring merit to those
who use it and thus doing good to the world. Out of affection to my sister, I live in the Himalayas by Kausiki
River leading a life of a Rishi. She is still alive in the form of the river. Leaving my sister to accomplish my
vow at the Siddhashramam, I came down here and by your tejas I accomplished my vow. This Girivraja
extending along the side of Sona belongs to my ancestors.
Half the night has passed and let us sleep now. The nocturnal animals are freely roaming around. The
sages applauded the glory and every one slept for the night.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 35 Ganga Tripathaga Gaamini

The next day morning, they all got up and got ready to continue the journey. Rama asked if they would
follow the River Sona along its dunes or through the boat. Brahmarishi Vishwamitra suggested that they
follow the sages. They thus crossed the river beholding diverse forests and nature. After traveling for half
a day, they reached Ganga.
Har Har Gange! Har Har Gange! Har Har Gange!
All of them rejoiced reaching Ganga. They went to the bank of Ganga and did Pitru Tarpanam. Then they
did Yagnam and gave havis to Devas. Then, they ate the left over part of the havis and sat around
Vishwamitra. Then Rama asked Brahmarishi Vishwamitra to tell the Origin of Ganga, how it traverses in
the three worlds and how it finally reaches the ocean.
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra then began narrating the origin of Ganga and how it traverses across the three
worlds. Himavan Mountain, the greatest treasure trove of minerals has a pair of two daughters who are
equal to none. Mount Merus daughter Mena is the wife of Himavan and mother of his two daughters. Ganga
is the elder daughter of Himavan and Uma is this second daughter.
UMA UMA UMA = AUM = Shakteya Pranavam
Later the Devas requested Himavan to spare Ganga to heaven to fulfill Deva Karyam. For the welfare of
the world, Himavan spared Ganga for making the world pure. Ganga follows her own way. The Devas were
overjoyed to have Ganga in the heaven as Akasha Ganga.
The daughter of Himavan is known for her Tapas. Himavan gave Uma (AUM Parasakthi) as a wife to
Rudra. Both Uma and Ganga are very pious and worshipped by all in the world. The Ganga that flows in
heaven is called Deva Ganga. O Rama, I have now described how Ganga flows in heaven.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 36 Kumara Sambhavam

Rama and Lakshmana were overjoyed hearing the story of Himavans daughters. Rama said O Bhagavan,
you have narrated an excellent story capable of conferring merit to those who hear it. Please give all the
details of Gangas flow in Akasha, Bhumi and Patala Lokham. With what motive did that world purifying
stream choose to wash all three regions? How did Ganga become the foremost among the rivers? With
what achievements is she associated in all three worlds?
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra now began to give a detailed account. Being newly married Bhagavan Shiva
spent a hundred celestial years with Uma enjoying conjugal bliss. All the Devas were worried wondering
who could bear the glory of a Son born to Uma through Shiva. So they made loud prayers attracting Shivas
attention. They said a son born of you will be extremely glorious and will burn the three worlds with his
tejas. Hence, discontinue the conjugal bliss and resort to Tapas with Uma. Bhagavan Shiva said Uma and
I will retain our Tejas within ourselves saving the worlds. However, a portion of my Tejas has already left
my heart and is ready to be dropped. Tell me who will receive this? They said in unison that Bhumi will
receive the Tejas. So, Bhagavan Shiva dropped his Tejas on Bhumi. The Tejas spread across the entire
Bhumi with its mountains and forests. Fearing that the Bhumi will crack with the heat produced by the Tejas,
the Devas prayed to Agni to hold the Tejas with the help of Vayu. Agni consolidated the Tejas into a white
mountain and transformed into a Saravanam, a thicket of white reeds shining as Agni and Surya.
The Devas now prayed to Bhagavan Shiva and Uma. Angered by their behavior Uma cursed them as
follows Since you stopped me from having a Son from my husband, your spouses will remain without
children as well from this day. Uma then cursed Bhumi You will have a multiform surface. You will have
many husbands. You will never enjoy the delight of having a son. Seeing all this Bhagavan Shiva left to
Himalayas accompanied by his spouse Uma.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!
In the next Sarga, Brahmarishi describes the birth of Kartikeya and concludes with a Phala Stuti. Elders
say that if pregnant ladies listen to this, they will be blessed with sons like Kartikeya.
Maha Periyava of Kanchi Kamakoti has explained why the Devas had sought this weird wish from Shiva
and obstructed Saravana Bhava from being born of Uma. The legend goes as follows. Once Sanat Kumara
dreamt of a war and that he was the Senapathi. The next day morning when he got up and asked Brahma
why he dreamt this way, Brahma said it indicates that you have to take a birth and be a Senapathi. So,
Sanat Kumara came down to Srisailam and was meditating on Shiva. While Shiva and Parvati were
crossing that path, Sanat Kumara did not get up to pray as he saw Parabrahman everywhere. Shiva came
down and asked Sanat Kumara to be born as his son. Sanat Kumara said I will be born only as your son.
Parvati questioned, what about her. Sanat Kumara being celestial did not want to be born in the womb. So
he promised to be born in Saravanam thereby becoming Parvathis son as well. That is the reason the
Mantram for Kartikeya is Om Saravana Bhavaya Namah. This explanation is not in Valmiki Ramayanam,
but Maha Periyava has explained this in one of his discourses.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 37 Kumara Sambhavam Continued

After Shiva left for his Tapas, all the Devas approached Brahma desiring a Deva Senapathi. They did
Namaskaram and said Shiva has given his Tejas and is doing Tapas with Uma. Please guide us now.
Brahma said, Umas curse will come true and you all will not have a progeny. Reach out to Ganga and have
Agni drop the Shiva Tejas on Ganga. Uma will also be fine with her sister Ganga carrying the Tejas. All the
Devas did namaskaram to Brahma and proceeded to carry out his order, O Rama. They reached Kailasa
Parvatam and asked Agni to follow Brahmas orders. Agni now prayed to Ganga to bear the Shiva Tejas in
her womb.
Ganga look a form of a celestial and Agni spread around her passing on the Tejas. After getting the Shiva
Tejas, Ganga said she is unable to bear the heat. Agni seeing the condition of Ganga, said lay the embryo
on this Himalaya Mountain. Ganga ejected the embryo and a glitter of molten gold, silver with matches
dazzle emerged on that mountain. In the process of combustion of fire, copper, iron, lead and several
dhatus (metals) emerged in that area. Just as the embryo was laid on the Himalaya Mountain, the entire
Saravanam became brilliant and golden. From then onwards gold with brilliance is called jaata rupa, one
that retains its birth time form.
Then Kumara was born in the assembly of Indra and Marut Ganas. The Devas arranged the milk through
the Kritikas. The Kritikas now resolved that since they are feeding Kumara, he is their son. The Devas
then named him Kartikeya and said he will be renowned in all three worlds. Glad to hear the Devas, they
gave a bath to auspicious Kartikeya who shined like gold. The Devas then called the boy Skanda, who slid
down from the secretions of a womb. Kumara then became a six faced boy, Shanmuka and suck the milk
from the six Kritikas. After sucking milk for just one day, Kumara became an adolescent and attacked the
demons with his our vigor. The Devas now appointed him as Sura Sena Gana Pati. I have now narrated on
the banks of Ganga, Kumara Sambhavam O Rama which confers divinity and merit on its listeners.
Phala Stuti Kartikeyas devotees on Bhumi will lead a long life with sons and grandsons and upon death
will reach Skandas abode Skanda Saalokyam.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 38 Story of Ganga Sagara

O Rama, once Ayodhya was ruled by King Sagara who was very pious. He desired a son as he did not
have any sons. Kesini, the daughter of Vidarbha was his elder wife. She was extremely pious and truthful.
The second wife was named Sumati. She was the daughter of Aristanemi, also called Kasyapa. She was
the sister of Garuda. Sagara reached Himalayas with his wives and did Tapas at Bhrigu Prasravana for a
hundred years. Bhrigu, the son of Brahma conferred a boon to Sagara at the end of the Tapas. He said
Good sons will be born to you and will attain unequalled glory. One wife of yours will bear a son that will
perpetuate your race. The other wife will give birth to sixty thousand sons.
Hearing the sages boon, Sagaras wives enquired who will have one son and who will have sixty thousand.
When Bhrigu asked them to choose, the elder wife Kesini desired to have one son while the younger wife
opted for sixty thousand sons. They did a pradakshinam to the sage and returned back to the kingdom.
After sometime Kesini gave birth to Asamanja. Sumati delivered a fetus shaped like a bitter gourd. On the
gourd being split sixty thousand sons emerged from it. The nurses nurtured them, placing them in a jar full
of ghee. After a considerable period of time, they attained maturity. After a really long time, the sixty
thousand sons endowed by youthful vigor stood by Sagara.
Asamnaja, on the other hand turned out to be cruel. He would catch hold of infants and throw them in
Sarayu River. He would laugh seeing them drowning. Because of his sinful conduct of tormenting pious
men, harming citizens, Sagara exiled him from his capital. Amsuman, the son of Asamanja was however
valiant, loved by all people and spoke kindly to all.
After a long period of time, Sagara decided to perform a Yagnam with the help of his family priests and got
ready for the Yagnam.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!
Although not in Valmiki Ramayanam, Krishna Premi Swamigal says in one of his discourses on
Ramayanam that Asamanja was a spiritually elevated person and wanted to do Tapas. Hence he was
acting this way so that he is exiled from the kingdom and he can continue on his spiritual journey.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 39 Story of Ganga Jambudwipa

Excavated
Rama asked Brahmarishi Vishwamitra to tell in detail how his fore father Sagara did the yagnam.
Brahmarishi continued Shankaras father-in-law Himavan and Vindhya Mountain always compete with
each other. The region between these two mountains is called Aryavarta and the yagnam took place in this
region. That land is known as Yagna Bhumi. When the horse was sent for the Aswamedha yagnam,
Amsuman, being a Maharadhi kept guard of the horse during its wanderings.
While the yagnam was going on, on the day of Ukthya (concluding day), Indra assumed a form of a
Rakshasa and stole the horse. The priests present there told the king that the horse is being taken away
by force and this would bring ill luck to all. King Sagara then addressed his sixty thousand sons asking them
to allocate a yogana (64 square miles) for each of them and search the entire Jambudwipa and if you cannot
find it, excavate the Jambudwipa and find the thief and bring the horse back. As per the rules of the yagnam,
I along with the priests doing the yagnam here cannot get up until we finish the yagnam.
Following their fathers orders, they searched the entire Jambudwipa and when they did not find it, they
started digging the earth until they reached Rasatala. Loud roars of creatures that live in the subterranean
regions where heard made by Nagas, Rakshasas, etc. They thus excavated the entire Jambudwipa from
all sides.
Agitated with all this, Devas, Gandharvas, Nagas, and Rakshasas went to Brahma for advice. They did
namaskaram and told Brahma that the sons of Sagara have excavated Jambudwipa causing misery to the
creatures living there.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 40 Story of Ganga Maha Gajah

On hearing the Devas, Brahma said Vasudeva, to whom this Bhumi belongs, is there in the form of Kapila.
These sixty thousand sons of Sagara will be burned by his Hum karam. The ancient Rishis have already
prophesied through Divine vision that Bhumi will be split and the sons of Sagara will be turned to ashes by
Bhagavan Kapila. The Devas then returned to their abode.
As the sons of Sagara were digging the Bhumi a huge unbearable sound emerged. After hallowing the
Bhumi and making pradakshinam, they rushed to Sagara and informed that they did not find the horse.
Infuriated, Sagara ordered vasudhaa talam vi bhedya, split open the Bhumi, and find the thief and the
horse and then return. On hearing the words of their father, they rushed to Rasatalam. This is the last
mantle of earth from its crust. Atala, vitala, sutala, talaatala, rasatala and paatala are the seven layers of
earth.
While digging the Bhumi on the eastern side, they saw a huge elephant, Viruupaaksha Maha Gajah bearing
the entire eastern Bhumi on its head. O Rama, on certain occasions when the Maha Gajah moves its head
due to tiresomeness, earthquakes occur on earth. They did a namaskaram and puja to the Maha Gajah
that bears the entire eastern Bhumi and proceeded towards the south splitting the Bhumi. Even on the
southern direction they found a mammoth Maha Gajah by name Mahapadmam bearing the weight of the
southern side. They were surprised to see this, did a namaskaram and proceeded to the western direction
splitting the Bhumi enroute. A Maha Gajah by name Sumanasa was bearing the weight of the western
direction. Doing pradakshinam to the Gajah and asking its welfare, they moved to the northern direction
where a lot of Soma juice is found as they do a lot of yagnam in the northern direction. In the northern
direction, they saw the most auspicious Bhadra Gajah, snow-white in color, bearing the weight of the
northern side. On touching the head of the Bhadra Gajah and doing namaskaram they continued digging
towards the east. Upon reaching the most auspicious north east direction eshaana digbhaaga, Shiva
sthaanam, they tunneled the Bhumi.
On reaching the eshaana digbhaaga, they saw Bhagavan Vasudeva in Kapila Avataram and they saw the
horse moving around nearby. Assuming Kapila Bhagavan as the thief they furiously dashed with crowbars,
ploughs, trees, boulders shouting stay! They announced that they are sons of Sagara and Kapila Bhagavan
was the thief that stole the horse while rushing towards Kapila Bhagavan.
Hearing them, Bhagavan Kapila did a Hum Karam (sound). By the Hum Karam, all the sixty thousand
sons of Sagara became bhasma raashii kritaah heaps of ashes.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 41 Story of Ganga Garuda

Seeing that his sons have not yet returned, King Sagara sent his grandson Amsuman in search of his sons
and to bring the horse back. Sagara cautions Amsuman to be prepared for war if he is attacked in his
search. Offer namaskaram to worthy celestials that you encounter on your way and help me complete my
yagnam thereby gaining merit in paralokham.
Amsuman now proceeded with his Dhanus and sword in search of his uncles. He proceeded in the tunnel
dug by his uncles and saw that Devas, Danavas, Nagas, Pannagas where worshiping the Disha Gajah.
Amsuman offered his pradakshinam to the Disha Gajah and enquired about his uncles and the horse. The
Disha Gajah blessed Amsuman On achieving your mission, you will return expeditiously along with the
horse. He then sequentially reached the other Disha Gajah and offered the prayers based on their
direction. They also gave the same blessings as the first Disha Gajah. Amsuman finally reached the place
where the bhasma rashii (ashes) of his sixty thousand uncles were. He wept seeing the ashes of his uncles.
He also saw the horse grazing nearby. Wanting to offer Jala Tarpanam, he searched for a water tank.
Looking around Amsuman saw Garuda, the maternal uncle of his father. Garuda consoled Amsuman and
said that since his uncles were burned by Bhagavan Kapila. Laukiki (earthly) water will not reach them even
if he offers Pitru Tarpanam with Laukiki water. Only the divine waters of Ganga can reach your paternal
uncles. Only when Ganga drenches the ashes, your uncles will reach heaven. You leave with the horse
and help your grandfather finish his yagnam.
On hearing Garudas advice, Amsuman took the horse and reached the place where his grandfather was
doing the yagnam. He told everything that happened to his grandfather Sagara. On hearing his grandson,
Sagara first finished his yagnam as per the scriptures. Sagara then reached his capital and could not come
to a conclusion on how to bring Ganga to Bhumi. He ruled for thirty thousand years and could not find a
way to bring Ganga. He eventually died.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!
As per the Smrti - Death in the hands of a Chandala, or a Brahmana, or being submerged in water, or
through a snake bite, struck by lightning, or being bitten by poisonous animals falls on men of sinful deeds.
Offering of Udakam, Pindanam will not get them to paralokham. This is the reason Garuda suggested that
Ganga be brought to help them reach the Paralokham. Vishwamitra shows the importance of Pitru Karam
to Rama through the story of Rama's ancestors.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 42 Story of Ganga OM NAMAH

SHIVAYA
As per the law of Time, Sagara met his end after his role on earth was over. Per the wishes of the citizens
of Ayodhya, Amsuman became the king. He was a great ruler. His son Dilip was equally great. Entrusting
the kingdom to Dilip, Amsuman practiced Tapas in the highest peaks of Himalayas for Gangavataranam.
After thirty two lakh years of severe Tapas in a cave alone, Amsuman died and because of his tapas,
reached heaven.
Dilip was constantly thinking of a way to bring Ganga to help relieve this agony of his departed ancestors
in the ash lump form. While he was thus thinking Bhagiratha, his son was born. Dilip was a glorious king
and met his death after thirty thousand years due to an illness. He had installed Bhagiratha as the king and
ascended to Indra lokam based on the merit he earned for his own self.
Emperor Bhagiratha did not have a son. Being a royal sage by nature, he entrusted the citizens and the
kingdom to his ministers and practiced tapas in Gokarnam. With uplifted arms and senses fully controlled,
he exposed himself to five fires, four on all four sides and fifth in the shape of sun above. He partook food
only once a month. After a thousand years of such practice, Brahma was pleased.
Brahma came with all the gods and asked Bhagiratha to ask for a wish. Bhagiratha prayed doing
namaskaram. If you are pleased with me bless me so that the sons of Sagara can receive Ganga through
my hands. Bless me with a male child so that the line of Ikswaku can continue. Brahma blessed Bhagiratha
saying Here is Ganga. However, this Bhumi will not be able to bear the weight of Ganga. Pray to Hara,
Trishula Dara to bear the weight of Ganga as he alone can sustain the fall of Ganga. Having thus spoken
to the king, Brahma instructed Ganga to oblige Bhagiratha when time comes and ascended back to heaven
with the gods.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 43 Story of Ganga Gangavataranam

After receiving guidance from Brahma to pray to Shiva to bear the weight of Ganga, Bhagiratha again did
tapas for Shiva for one year standing on the tip of his great toes stamped to the ground. After a year,
Umapathi, Pasupathi, Sarva Lokha Namaskrutam, appeared with Uma by his side and said as follows O
Bhagiratha, I am pleased with you. I shall receive Ganga on my head as she descends to Bhumi.
Swelling into a form of a mighty stream and acquiring great force Divine Ganga rushed to the head of Shiva.
Glorious Ganga who is most difficult to sustain, thought within herself, Passing Bhagavan Shiva, I might
as well enter Patala. Enraged by her arrogance, Bhagavan Shankara on his part, made up his mind to
conceal Ganga in his head! Fallen on the holy head of Rudra, O Rama, the sacred river Ganga could not
reach Bhumi even though she tried her best. Revolving in coils on the head of Bhagavan Shiva, unable to
even seep through, the divine Ganga made several rounds of years!
Bhagiratha saw this and again started his tapas for Shiva. Hara obliged Bhagiratha and let Ganga fall into
Bindusara, a lake near Himalayas created by Brahma. While the river was being released, it got split into
seven streams. Of these, three streams Hladini, Pavani and Nalini ran in an eastern direction with delightful
waters, Sucaksu, Sita and Sindhu ran in the western direction with blessed waters. The seventh stream,
followed Bhagiratha behind his chariot. Mounted on a beautiful chariot, Bhagiratha with unique splendor
marched again and Ganga followed along keeping up with his pace, hence is known as Bhagirathi, daughter
of Bhagiratha. Because the holy river descended from heaven to Shivas head and then came to Bhumi, it
is called Tripathaga.
On Bhumi, as Ganga fell with terrific noise and went through its mountains and passages, a lot of aquatic
animals from Ganga also fell along. All the celestials saw with bewilderment the descent of Ganga on
Bhumi. Ganga, who rids all who come in contact with it of their sins, continued flowing broad in some places,
narrow in some, swiftly as it went along with Bhagiratha. All the celestials touched and did Achamanam
with the Ganga water that came from Shivas head as an act of purification. Those who had fallen from the
heaven due to their sins were rid of their sins by bathing in it. Having been rid of their sin through the very
touch of that water and further invested with merit, their reached their abode. Delighted with the sparkling
water, rid of their sin having bathed in Ganga, people rejoiced even more.
Delighted at the sight of mighty Ganga following Bhagiratha, all the celestials also followed along behind
Ganga in whatever direction Bhagiratha went. Enroute Ganga washed off the Yagna Bhumi of Rishi Jahnu
who performs miracles. Enraged at the pride of Ganga, Jahnu drank up the entire Ganga by his yogic
power. Astonished, the Devas and all celestials prayed to Jahnu to release Ganga as his daughter Jahnavi.
The sage then released Ganga as Jahnavi through his ears. Finally following Bhagiratha, Ganga reached
the place excavated by the sons of Sagara. Ganga forced its way to the Rasatala to give a fruitful end to
Bhagirathas tapas. Out of exhaustion and out of the sight of his forefathers as ashes, Bhagiratha fainted.
Divine Ganga then washed the ashes of all the sixty thousand sons of Sagara purging their sin and helping
them ascend to heaven, O Rama.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 44 Gangavataranam Phala Stuti

After Bhagiratha reached Rasatala to the place where his forefathers where laid to ashes, and after Ganga
had washed their ashes, Brahma addressed Bhagiratha Your sixty thousand fore fathers have been rid of
sins and have now reached heaven and become Devas. They will remain in heaven as long as the water
of the ocean remains on Bhumi. This Ganga will be widely known as Bhagirathi after you. It will also be
called Tripathaga, Divya. Offer Jala Tarpanam here on the banks of Ganga to your fore fathers and
implement the vow taken by your ancestors to help relieve them. This ambition to bring Ganga was not
realized by your great ancestors Sagara, Amsuman, Dilip. By this act of bringing Ganga you have attained
a great virtue and Bharma Lokham. Even though you are pure, bathe in Ganga and attain merit. Unlike
other rivers, Ganga is fit to be bathed in all year around. I shall now go back to my abode and you return to
your kingdom.
Saying so Brahma left. Bhagiratha did the Jala Tarpanam to all his forefathers in the seniority and following
scriptures and then returned to his kingdom. Hic citizens rejoiced to have their king back. In this way the
story of Ganga has been narrated to you at length O Rama. Attain blessedness as a reward of hearing it.
May prosperity attend you! It is time for your Sandhya vandanam.
The departed forbears of a man who narrates to the Brahmanas, Kshatriyas and others, this story feel
gratified and Devas too get propitiated. The story of Ganga fetches wealth and renown, is conducive to
longevity, and ensures birth of male child and residence in heaven. He who listens O Rama to this blessed
story of the descent of Ganga to Bhumi, which is conducive to longevity, bids fair to attain all his desired
objects. All his sins totally disappear and the span of his life as well as his fame extends.

Rama and Lakshmana were very happy to hear the story of Ganga and pondered on it all night. The next
day morning they all got into a boat sent by Rishis to cross over Ganga. Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, along
with Rama and Lakshmana and all the sages now crossed Ganga on the boat and reached the city by
name Visala which looked like paradise. They were received by a host of sages. Seeing the beautiful city,
Rama requested Brahmarishi Vishwamitra to tell him about this city and its rulers.
O Rama, I shall narrate the story of Indra throwing light on the glory of Visala as heard by me and what
actually happened here. In a Satyayuga, mighty sons were born to Diti and highly blessed ones to Aditi.
They wanted to be immortal, immune to old age and free from disease. They wanted to churn the ocean to
get the amrutham. Using Vasuki as the cord, Mount Mandara as the churning rod, they started churning
the ocean. After a thousand years, Vasuki began to bite the rocks throwing up copious venom. As a result
of churning, a deadly poison Halahalam appeared on the surface of the ocean. The universe consisting of
Devas, Rakshasas and humans began to be consumed by it. The Devas rushed to Shiva and sought his
protection. Sri Hari appeared and asked Shiva to accept Halahalam as Agrapuja. Shiva consumed the
Halahalam and returned.
They again continued churning the ocean, but Mount Mandara slipped into Patala. They now prayed to
Vishnu and Sri Hari took the Kurma Avataram and supported the mountain on his back. Sri Hari also held
the top of the mountain with his hand and started churning the ocean with the Devas and Asuras.
Then after churning for a thousand years, Dhanvantari, the embodiment of Ayurveda emerged with a
Kamandalam. Apsaras also emerged from the ocean. Varuni, a spirituous liquor, a daughter of Varuna,
seeking a husband also emerged. Then Ucchaisravas, a horse, Kaustubha, a gem and amrutham emerged.
Colossal destruction started as they were fighting over the amrutham. Sri Hari took the Mohini avataram
and gave the amrutham to Devas who eventually won a war against the sons of Diti. Then Indra ruled over
the three worlds.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 46 Ditis Revenge

Diti approached her husband, Kasyapa requesting to get a son that is capable of killing Indra as a revenge
for the loss of her sons in the war during the Ksheera Sagara Madanam. Kasyapa blessed her that she will
get a son that is capable of killing Indra in war if she practices Tapas for a thousand years observing all the
rules of purity and left for his own tapas.
Diti reached Kusaplava to practice her tapas and austerities. Indra came to Diti during this period and
offered his services to Diti while she was practicing her austerities. Indra brought fire, darbha, firewood,
water, fruits, roots etc. He massaged her tired legs and helped her get over her fatigue. Except for the last
ten years, a thousand years had almost passed and being happy at the success of her Tapas, Diti spoke
to Indra May prosperity attend you. Your half-brother is to be born in ten years. Although I sought him for
your destruction, be free of all anxiety. I shall place friendly terms with you and together with your halfbrother you both can conquer the three worlds.
Saying so, at noon, she slept in a wrong position with the head placed in the side where feet should be
placed. Indra laughed and rejoiced to see her hair touch her feet in an impure posture. Through his yogic
power, Indra entered her womb and cut the fetus into seven with his Vajrayudam. The fetus cried do not
cut O Rama, and Indra said Do not cry. Diti got up and said the fetus should not be killed. Out of respect
to his step mother, Indra came out and stood with his Vajrayudam. Indra said, you lay asleep in an impure
posture and I cut the fetus that was being delivered to kill me. Pardon me for this offense.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 47 City of Visala

Seeing her fetus cut into seven parts, Diti made a plea to Indra. Through my fault, the fetus has been cut
to seven. No blame attaches to you. I wish to see your attempt of destroying my fetus turn favorable to both
of us. Let them be called Maruts (Ma Ru da Dont Cry), as addressed by you and let them become wind
gods and occupy seven belts of air in their ethereal form. They will be called Avaha, Pravaha, Samvaha,
Udvaha, Vivaha, Parivaha and Paravaha. Let one of these batches flow in Brahma lokam, one in Indra
Lokam, one in aerial region. The other four will actually traverse the four quarters from time to time
according to your direction. Indra obliged his step mother and said that Maruts will move about in the form
of wind gods as wished by Diti. They both then ascended to heaven.
O Rama, this Visala, is the tract where Indra offered his personal service to Diti when she was practicing
her austerities. Ikswaku had a pious son born of Alambusa. He was widely known as Visala. This city was
built by Visala and named after him. O Rama, Visalas son was Hemachandra and his son was Sucandra.
His son was known as Dhumraswa and Srnjaya. Srnjayas son was Sahadeva and Kusaswa was his son.
His son was Somadatta and his son was Kakutstha. His glorious son Sumati is now ruling this city. By the
grace of Ikswaku, all the rulers of Visala are long lived, high souled and powerful and pious. We shall stay
here comfortably for one night and tomorrow morning you ought to be able to see Janaka, O Rama.
Hearing that Brahmarishi Vishwamitra had arrived King Sumati rushed to personally receive him. Doing the
athidi puja and welcoming them the king said I am blessed to behold you O sage, in that you have visited
my city and come within my sight. None is more blessed than myself.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 48 Sage Gautama Ashram

King Sumati asked Brahmarishi Vishwamitra who the young princes with valor matching that of Vishnu
were. They look like Ashwini Kumaras and seem to belong to Deva Lokam. Whose sons are they? They
look alike and are like Sun and Moon. Why are they carrying weapons on them?
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra explained that they had come to the Siddhashramam and helped eliminate the
rakshasas and they are the sons of Dasaratha. Knowing who they are King Sumati received them with full
honors. After spending a night there, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra proceeded towards Mithila with his retinue.
On seeing Janakpur, the sages accompanying Brahmarishi Vishwamitra said Saadhu Saadhu meaning
splendid and admired the city. On the outskirts of Janakpur, Rama saw an ashramam that looked old and
was uninhabited and asked the Brahmarishi Vishwamitra about it.
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra said Hear about whose Ashramam this is and who cursed it. This ashramam that
looks divyam and was a holy place even for the Devas belonged to a great rishi by name Gautama. In this
Ashramam Gautama sat in Tapas along with his wife Ahalya for thousands of years.
Once seeing that Gautama was not in the Ashramam, Indra disguised as Gautama came to Ahalya seeking
sangamam. Although Ahalya realized that this was not Gautama, O Rama, she obliged to Indras wishes.
Feeling fulfilled to honor Indras wishes, Ahalya asked him to leave before Sage Gautama comes and
protect both of them from his wrath. Being delighted, Indra said, I am going as I came.
Seeing Indra disguised as him Sage Gautama cursed You have taken my form and committed this
unacceptable deed. You shall lose your male body parts. As soon as the Sage cursed, Indras male body
parts fell on the ground. Sage Gautama now cursed his wife you shall be here for thousands of years, in
dust, unseen by anyone, surviving only on air without any food and do tapas. You shall remain here until
Rama, Dasarathas son comes to this ashramam and purifies you. After worshipping Rama, your evil
tendencies will leave you and then you can come to my presence.
Cursing the immodest Ahalya, Sage Gautama went to Himalayas leaving this ashramam that was adorned
once with Siddhas, Charanas and other celestials.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!
Although not in Valmiki Ramayanam, elders commenting on this Sarga give a history of Ahalya as being
the Brahma Manasa Daughter. After the Ksheera Sagara Madanam, when Brahma sees Mohini, he feels
like creating a daughter that looks very beautiful. Thus Ahalya was created by Brahmas mind. Brahma left
her with Sage Gautama to raise her. When she reached her youth, Sage Gautama takes her back to
Brahma to get her married to a suitable groom. All Devas including Indra will want to marry Ahalya as she
looked very beautiful. Even Ahalya in her heart wanted to marry Indra. Brahma did not know this fact and
seeing that everyone wanted to marry Ahalya, says whoever comes first after doing a pradakshinam to
Bhumi will get Ahalya as their wife. Wanting to show Dharma, and the importance of Go Mata, Sage
Gautama does a pradakshinam of a Cow that is near Brahma while all others start doing pradakshinam of
Bhumi. Thus, Sage Gautama is the chosen groom and Ahalya is married to Sage Gautama.
Elders also comment as stated in the next chapter that this curse by Sage Gautama purifies Ahalya and
after that her tapas is so strong that no one can even see her due to her brightness. Elders comment when
they talk about this Sarga, that the concept of Divorce does not exist in Sanatana Dharmam. Methods like
this where the wrong doer is made to do Tapas for self-purification existed instead.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 49 Ahalya Sapa Vimochanam

Being castrated by the curse of Sage Gautama, Indra approached the Pitru Devas keeping Agni as the
head. Indra said he succeeded in hampering the tapas of Sage Gautama by making him angry and
pronounce a curse and their by helped the Devas by safe guarding Indra Lokam from Sage Gautama. The
Pitru Devas saw a goat (mesham) there that was kept for sacrifice for the Pitru Devas. They transported
the goats male body parts to Indra and thereafter said that only castrated goats should be offered in
sacrifice to Pitru Devas. In turn, the Devas will confer a reward to men to sacrifice castrated goats to Pitru
Devas.
O Rama, from then onwards Ahalya has been practicing Tapas in this ashram. Step into it and bless Ahalya.
Honoring Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Rama and Lakshmana entered the Ashram and beheld the holy lady
that looked like fire. Her effulgence due to tapas was so bright that it was hard even for celestials to see
her.
Rama and Lakshmana touched the feet of Ahalya and did namaskaram. All the celestials rained flowers
and sounded kettle drums. Being freed from the curse, Ahalya offered athidi puja by offering water to wash
and other hospitality. Sage Gautama also offered athidi puja to the revered guests at his ashram as per the
scriptures. Then, the sage resumed his austerities and Brahmarishi Vishwamitra left to Mithila with Rama,
Lakshmana and the rest of the rishis.

Proceeding in the north east direction from Sage Gautamas ashram, with Brahmarishi Vishwamitra leading
them, Rama and Lakshmana reached the Yagnam enclosure of Raja Rishi Janaka. Seeing the place with
highly learned Brahmins from all parts of the country, their camps, and their carts with items for Agnihotram
and Yagnam, Rama said to Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, this place is excellent, please select a suitable place
for us to camp. Brahmarishi selected a secluded and clean place that had access to water.
Hearing that Brahmarishi Vishwamitra has arrived, Raja Rishi Janaka rushed at once with his Kula Guru
Satananda and other Brahmins along with water and Madhuparka to offer to the highly honored Brahmarishi
as per the scriptures. Accepting the athidi puja, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra enquired the welfare of Janaka
and the accompanying priests and the Yagnam that was going on. On Janakas request, everyone sat in
their seats in the order of seniority.
Looking at Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Janaka said the fruits of my Yagnam have been achieved today by
your very presence here. I feel blessed and indebted to you for your arrival to this yagnam enclosure along
with these sages. The Brahmanas doing the Dhanur Yagnam have said that my yagnam is going to go on
for twelve more days. After that you will see all the Devas here as they come to receive the Havis from the
yagnam.
After saying this to Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Janaka, doing namaskaram enquired who the boys were.

These two youngsters, oh, sage, let safety betide you, striding like audacious elephants and
arrogant lions, bearing a similitude to adventurous tigers and adamantine bulls, and wielding
quivers, swords, and bows, are valorous with their valour matching that of Vishnu, and with their
eyes broad like lotus-petals and with youthfulness in the offing they look like the exceptionally
beautiful twin-gods, Ashwini-brothers, by their physique. How these two have footslogged and
chanced here as though immortals have chanced on earth from the abode of gods at their
pleasure? What for they have come here, and whose scions are they?
Hearing Janaka, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra declared them to be sons of Dasaratha and their success at
Siddhashramam, their visit to Visala, their meeting with Ahalya and Sage Gautama and how they have
come here to see the Maha Dhanus. Saying this Brahmarishi Vishwamitra paused.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 51 Satananda Narrates the Story of

Brahmarishi Vishwamitra
Hearing the story as told by Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Satananda, the eldest son of Sage Gautama and
Ahalya was thrilled with joy at the sight of Rama. Beholding the sight of Rama and Lakshmana who were
now seated, Satananda asked Brahmarishi Vishwamitra Was my illustrious mother who was doing Tapas
for so long shown to Rama? Did my mother offer fruits and hospitality to Rama? Did you tell Rama of how
Indra had violated decency? Was my mother united with my father as a result of the sight of Rama? Did my
father also offer hospitality to Rama? Was my father greeted with a tranquil mind by Rama?
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra replied What ought to have been done by me was done. No omission was made.
Ahalya has been united with Sage Gautama just as Renuka was united with Jamadagni. Hearing this
Satananda spoke to Rama as follows Welcome to our place O Rama. Coming with a guru like Brahmarishi
Vishwamitra is a sign of good luck for us. The glorious Vishwamitra is credited with achievements that are
unthinkable for others. He attained the stature of Brahmarishi by pure tapas. His splendor is beyond
measure. He has received the highest spiritual knowledge. No one is more blessed than you, O Rama, who
has a guru like Brahmarishi Vishwamitra. I shall tell you the story of Vishwamitra. Please listen O Rama.
This sage has been a pious king for a long time, capable of subduing the enemy, knowing what is right,
learned and devoted to good people. There was a king by name Kusa who was Brahmas son. Kusa had a
son called Kusanabha, also known as Gadhi. This sage Vishwamitra is the son of Gadhi. Vishwamitra ruled
over the earth for thousands of years. With his Akshowhini army he went round the globe marching
successfully across cities, states, rivers, mountains and hermitages. In the process, once they came in sight
of Vasisthas hermitage. It was rich in flowers, creepers, trees, wild animals and also frequently visited by
Siddhas, Charanas, Devas, Danavas, Gandharvas, flocks of deer, birds, crowded with many Brahmarishis,
Raja rishis who were also performing yagnam. Some rishis were surviving on water, some controlled their
mind, some ate only fallen leaves, fruits or roots, classes of Rishis Valakhilyas (born of the hair of Brahma)
were doing tapas while other classes of Rishis called Vaikhanasas (born from the nail of Brahma) were
doing homam. Vishwamitra saw this sight of Vasisthas ashram which looked like Brahma lokam.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 52 Journey of Vishwamitra

aatithyam kartum icchaami
Raja Vishwamitra was pleased to get darshanam of Brahmarishi Vasistha. Brahmarishi Vasistha in turn
honored the king with fruits and a seat and offered hospitality. Raja Vishwamitra enquired if his Agnihotram
is going on well and Brahmarishi Vasistha said yes and enquired about his kingdom, O king, do you rule
according to the fourfold conduct of a king? Are servants maintained by you and have all your enemies
been fully conquered? Are your sons and grandsons doing well?
Thus having exchanged pleasant talk, they both enjoyed each others company for a long time. Vasistha
now requested permission to offer hospitality aatithyam kartum icchaami to all of Vishwamitras army with
due honor. The Akshowhini Sena that was outside of Vasisthas ashram consisted of 21, 870 elephants,
equal number of chariots, 65, 610 horses, 1, 09, 350 soldiers. Vishwamitra humbly declined saying that
hospitality has already been offered to him with the great time he had with Vasistha. He requested
permission to leave and did namaskaram to Brahmarishi Vasistha.
However, Vasistha insisted again and finally Vishwamitra obliged. Vasistha now called his cow Sabala,
which has been washed clean of mud and said Come along Sabala and hear what I have to say. I am
determined to entertain a sumptuous meal to this Raja along with his Akshowhini Sena. Yield for my sake
in desired quantities. Yield all six varieties of dishes (pungent, acid, sweet, saline, bitter and alkaline) that
may be pleasing to a particular individual to his hearts content. Look Sharp! Produce O Sabala, in plenty
all kinds of food accompanied by drinks and dishes that can be licked or sucked.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 53 Journey of Vishwamitra Sabalam

Na Dasyami
Satananda continued the story. O Rama, thus instructed by Vasistha Sabala produced a sumptuous meal
for everyone present there according to whatever they wished in eat in their mind. All products of sugarcane,
honeys, fried grains, rice, wine, fermented liquor, heaps of steaming rice, Payasam, cooked pulses with
salt and condiments, streams of curds, ghee, milk, silver plates and glasses for juices etc. The entire
Akshowhini Sena was well fed and gratified at Vasisthas hospitality.
In the presence of his Kula guru, ministers, counsellors and dependents, being highly pleased, Vishwamitra
spoke to Vasistha as follows I am highly honored by your hospitality. Please give Sabala to me in exchange
for hundred thousand cows, as she is a jewel and the king is the rightful owner of anything that is precious
in his kingdom. Therefore give Sabala to me as I am its rightful owner. Sabalam me Dehi.
Vasistha replied Sabalam na Dasyami I shall not part with Sabala even in exchange for a thousand million
cows or heaps of silver coins. She cannot be weaned from my presence. She is my very life. Moreover, I
do all my Agni Karyam, Pitru Karyam, Bhuta Yagnam, Bali, Vaishwadeva, Swaha and Vasat Mantras with
her help. Sabala is the source of my life and I say on oath. For numerous reasons, Sabala cannot be given
Sabalam na Dasyami.
Unable to accept a no for an answer, Vishwamitra began bargaining for Sabala I offer fourteen thousand
elephants equipped with gold, eight hundred gold chariots driven by high bred white horses, eleven
thousand horses, one crore young cows, only in return for one Sabala. I shall give you without reservation
any amount of gems and gold in return for Sabala.
However, Vasistha again repeated that Sabala is everything to me and I shall not part with her.

Elders comment that Go Mata is not to be auctioned. This is what Vasistha was trying to show. Elders also
comment that this desire for Sabala (Kamadhenu) made Vishwamitra arrogant by saying being a King I
rightfully deserve to own it and then in the following chapters, shows the extent of revenge he builds for
Vasistha because he could not get Sabala.

Brahma Balam Divyam
When Vasistha did not willingly part with Kamadhenu, Vishwamitra proceeded and took Sabala by force, O
Rama. Being taken away by force, Sabala felt distressed and was weeping. Sabala reflected if she had
done something wrong and if that was the reason Vasistha had forsaken her. Shaking off from the hundreds
of restrainers that were restraining her, Sabala ran to the feet of Vasistha and cried asking why he had
forsaken her.
Questioned thus by Sabala, Vasistha felt tormented with grief. Vasistha said I have not forsaken you
Sabala, nor have you wronged me. Intoxicated by power, this king is taking you away by force. He is here
with an Akshowhini Sena and is mightier than us. Sabala now understood the inner meaning of Vasisthas
speech and said Brahman Brahma Balam Divyam. The spiritual strength of a Brahmana is much stronger
than the physical strength of a Kshatriya. Order me as my guardian to put an end to the pride, strength and
endeavor of Vishwamitra. When Sabala said this, Vasistha ordered Create a force capable of destroying
the enemys army.
Getting this order from Vasistha, Sabala now started producing an army with a HUM sound. The Pahlavas
that she created destroyed a whole army of Vishwamitra. Angered at this Vishwamitra used weapons to kill
the Pahlavas. Sabala now created Sakas, Yavanas and the entire army of Vishwamitra was consumed by
blazing fires produced by Sabalas forces. Vishwamitra now started dispatching missiles (Astram) and
confusion reigned in both the armies.

Seeing the confusion caused by Vishwamitras missiles, Vasistha orders Sabala to create more warriors
using her yogic power. Sabala now produced Kambhojas, Barbaras, Sakas, Mlecchas, Haritas and Kiratas.
The entire Akshowhini Sena of Vishwamitra was now wiped out by the warriors created by Sabala, O Rama.
Seeing the total destruction, a hundred sons of Vishwamitra rushed towards Vasistha with weapons in hand
to attack. They were reduced to ashes along with their chariots and horses by a mere HUM sound by
Vasistha.
Humiliated at the defeat and total destruction, Vishwamitra asked his surviving son to rule the kingdom
following the Kshatriya Dharma and returned to the Himalayas to practice tapas and please Bhagavan
Shiva. After some time, Bhagavan Shiva came on his Nandi Vahanam and asked what do you want?
Vishwamitra now did a shastanga namaskaram to Bhagavan Shiva and said If you are pleased with me,
O Bhagavan, the science of archery with its inmost secrets and including the branches of knowledge directly
or distantly auxiliary to it as also the scriptures forming a part of it may be revealed to me. Let the Astras
that are known to Devas, Danavas, Maharishis, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Rakshasas flash before my mind
Oh Bhagavan. Let me be knowledgeable on Dhanur Veda Sango Pango Upanishad.
Bhagavan Shiva, granted the wish saying So be it and left. Receiving the mystic Astras the mighty
Vishwamitra who was already filled with pride and was now puffed with arrogance assumed that Vasistha
would be dead now with all his Astras O Rama. Reaching Vasisthas ashram, Vishwamitra began to use
his Astras and the whole Ashram was consumed by fire from the Astras.
Alarmed at the assault of missiles, the disciples, birds and other fled the ashram. In an hour or so that whole
ashram became desolate even though Vasistha was saying dont be afraid. Vasistha now angrily addressed
Vishwamitra Wicked fool, you have made havoc to my Ashram which I have fostered for so long. You
cannot last for long saying this, Vasistha picked up his Brahma Dhandam which looked like Yamas rod.

Angered by Vasisthas challenge, Vishwamitra started firing all his Astras starting from the Agni Astram.
Vasistha stood there with his Brahma Dhandam and all the missiles being fired where getting neutralized
by Vasisthas Brahma Dhandam crushing the pride of Vishwamitra. One after one all the Astras that exist
in the universe were used and neutralized by Vasisthas Brahma Dhandam.
With all Astras failing, Vishwamitra discharged the Brahma Astram. All the celestial stood in awe wondering
what would happen. Vasistha neutralized the Brahma Astram with his yogic power and the Brahma
Dhandam and consumed the Brahma Astram. While consuming the Brahma Astram, Vasistha assumed a
fierce scary form and the fire that was radiating from him and his Brahma Dhandam was destroying the
worlds.
The Devas did saranagathi and prayed to Vasistha that Vishwamitra has been tamed and Vasistha should
quench the fire and relieve the world from the fire generated by the Brahma Astram. Vasistha now became
calm and got his pleasant form back. With a deep sigh Vishwamitra said that Kshatriya balam is nothing
when compared to the Brahma Balam. Understanding this, he proceeded to do severe tapas to become a
Brahmarishi.

Sri Rama Jayam - Balakandam - Sarga 57 - Journey of Vishwamitra - Rajarishi

Feeling embarrassed at the defeat in the hands of Brahmarishi Vasistha, Vishwamitra proceeded to the
southern direction with his wife and started doing tapas. He was surviving only on fruits and roots and
controlled his senses. He got four sons during this period who were truthful and virtuous. After a thousand
years of tapas, Brahma appeared and blessed him saying that by virtue of your tapas, you have attained
the status of a Rajarishi. Saying so Brahma returned to Brahma lokam passing Indra lokam enroute.
Feeling dejected that even after doing tapas for so long, he is not recognized as a Brahmarishi, Vishwamitra
again started tapas to become a Brahmarishi.
During that time O Rama, Ikswaku race was being ruled by a king by name Trisanku. He wanted to perform
a Yagnam so that he can ascend to Indra lokam with his physical body and approached his Kula Guru,
Vasistha to do the Yagnam. However, Vasistha said such a Yagnam is not feasible. Trisanku now went to
the southern region where the hundred sons of Vasistha were doing tapas and doing namaskaram
requested them to do the Yagnam for him so that he can ascend to heaven with his physical body. He said
after his Kula Guru said he can't do the Yagnam, he feels that only his Kula Guru's sons can help and did
a namaskaram.

Filled with rage to hear the request of Trisanku, O Rama, the sons of Vasistha replied "when your Kula
Guru, who is capable of doing Yagnam for all three worlds has already condemned this request of yours to
ascend to heaven with your physical body, how can you approach anyone else and disrespect your Kula
Guru. Vasistha has been the Kula Guru of Ikswaku's and always supported them in their righteous causes.
Therefore, return to your kingdom and give up this thought as advised by your Kula Guru."
O Rama, Trisanku however said that he will seek some other sage to help him and got ready to leave. The
sons of Vasistha could not accept the disrespect for their father and guru. So they cursed him "you shall
become a chandala" and returned to their ashram.
As soon as the night passed, the king became a chandala. He became black, his yellow vesti became
black, his hair fell, his garlands turned into the smasana (cemetery) garlands, his perfumes became
bhasmam (ashes), his gold and silver jewelry became that of iron. Seeing him become a chandala, all his
counsellors and citizens that accompanied him ran away deserting him.
Burning in agony at his condition, Trisanku now went to Vishwamitra who felt pity looking at the condition
of the ruler of Ayodhya. Vishwamitra enquired what had happened and Trisanku said "I have been rejected
by my Kula Guru Vasistha and cursed by his sons. I wanted to do a Yagnam to ascend to heaven with my
body. Instead of reward, I have been transformed to this state. I don't speak untruth even in this state. I
have ruled the kingdom following dharma. However, my Kula Guru has refused my request for this Yagnam.
Therefore, I believe that Man proposes while God disposes. However, I seek your support in doing the
Yagnam so that I can ascend to heaven with my physical body."

will not come to accept Havis from a Yagnam being conducted by a Kshatriya for a Chandala. All the
Brahmins and Ritwiks that assembled there will not be able to ascend to heaven after death, after they eat
the offering made by a chandala."
In anger, Vishwamitra cursed the sons of Vasistha as follows "because you speak ill about me who is
engaged in tapas, this very moment you will be reduced to ashes by kala pasam. For seven hundred births
you will be born as mustikas, and eat dog's flesh and survive on dead bodies. You will roam around with
loathsome pursuits and misshapen form. Mahodaya will be reduced to a Nishada (an outcast race born of
a Brahmin married to a Sudra woman) and condemned in the society. He will remain engaged in destroying
the lives of others and live a wretched existence because of my fury."
Cursing thus, Vishwamitra paused.

Sri Rama Jayam - Balakandam - Sarga 60 - Journey of Vishwamitra - Trisanku

Swargam
Through his Tapo Balam, Vishwamitra perceived that the sons of Vasistha have been destroyed with his
curse. Vishwamitra now addressed the gathering of Ritwiks and Brahmins saying that Trisanku has sought
his refuge to ascend to heaven with his present body. Therefore, they should all join him in the Yagnam
and help him. The Ritwiks and Brahmins conceded that if they don't oblige to Vishwamitra, through his
tapas shakti he would curse them. So they took positions for the Yagnam.
With Vishwamitra as the Adhwaryu, chief priest, according to the Kalpa and Vidhi all the mantras were
chanted by all to invoke the Devas to come and accept the Havis. However, the Devas did not come to
accept the Havis. Angered Vishwamitra now proclaimed "O Trisanku ascend to heaven by my Tapas
Shakti" and poured the ghee into the Agni.
With the help of Vishwamitra's acquired Tapas Shakti Trisanku rose to heaven with his present body.
Seeing this Indra and Devas cursed Trisanku to fall headlong to earth as he does not have the merit and is
cursed by his guru. From there Trisanku pleaded to Vishwamitra to save him. Vishwamitra now in anger,
said stop right there and created a saptha rishi mandalam, nakshatramandalam and was now getting ready
to create a Indra to rule over this new heaven.
The Devas now prayed to Vishwamitra that this Trisanku does not have the merit to ascend to heaven and
is cursed by his Guru. Vishwamitra now said "I have given my word to Trisanku. Therefore, the Trisanku
Swargam that I created will remain as long as Brahma's creation exists, and Trisanku shall live there
eternally."
Devas now said that Trisanku will remain there head down shining brightly and nakshatra's will do
pradakshinam to this mandalam. Vishwamitra now concluded the Yagnam and everyone returned to their
places.

Sri Rama Jayam - Balakandam - Sarga 61 - Journey of Vishwamitra - Middle Child

Seeing the Ritwiks and Brahmins leaving, Vishwamitra said, "we faced an obstacle in the form of Trisanku
in this southern region. So I shall proceed to the western region by the side of the Puskara lakes." Saying
so, he proceeded to the western region and began his tapas living on roots and fruits.
During this time, Ambarisha was ruling Ayodhya. Once he was performing Aswamedha Yagnam and Indra
stole his horse. The priest doing the Yagnam warned Ambarisha that this negligence will cost him his
kingdom and as prayaschittam he had to quickly find his horse or bring a human for Bali before the Yagnam
ends.
Hearing the advice of his priest, O Rama, Ambarisha set out with thousands of cows and gold and silver
coins in exchange for a human for Bali. After searching everywhere for his horse and not finding it, he saw
on Mount Bhrgutunga sage Rcika sitting with his wife and sons.
Ambarisha now enquired about the sages welfare and briefed him about the loss of his horse and that he
was looking for a human for Bali. In return he would offer a crore cows and gold and silver coins. Sage
Rcika said, he can't part with his eldest son and his wife said she can't part with the youngest.
O Rama, Sunahsepa the middle son then offered himself for Bali. Taking Sunahsepa with him in exchange
of cows, gold and silver, Ambarisha left happily.

Sri Rama Jayam - Balakandam - Sarga 62 - Journey of Vishwamitra - Power of

Prayer
O Rama, taking Sunahsepa with him Ambarisha rested at Pushkara at noon. There Sunahsepa saw his
maternal uncle Vishwamitra practicing Tapas. He fell into Vishwamitra's lap crying "there is no father or
mother for me. You alone should protect me in such a way that Ambarisha's Yagnam is materialized and I
get long life so that I can practice tapas and secure my place in para lokam." So saying Sunahsepa did a
saranagathi to Vishwamitra.
Vishwamitra consoled Sunahsepa and addressed his sons "the time has just come for ensuring our good
in para lokam, for which fathers desirous of blessings beget sons. This son of a rishi has sought refuge in
me. You have all engaged yourself in virtuous acts and are all devoted to duty. Taking the place of
Sunahsepa go with Ambarisha and become his Bali animal."
Hearing this request from their father, Madhucchanda, the eldest son of Vishwamitra back answered his
father "how is it that you are parting with your sons to save another's son? We reckon this attempt as
including the flesh of dog in one's dish." Hearing the disrespectful answer Vishwamitra cursed his sons
"because of this disrespect, like the sons of Vasistha you shall be born in low classes of Candalas and
Mustikas and living on the flesh of dogs drag your wretched existence for a thousand years."
After cursing his sons Vishwamitra addressed Sunahsepa "when you reach the Yagnam so pleasing to
Vishnu (Vishnavam), when they tie you with Darbha and apply chandanam, chant these two mantras
through Agni and please Indra and Vamana. Thereby Ambarisha will attain his Yagnam phalam and you
will be blessed with long life. Saying so Vishwamitra taught the two mantras to Sunahsepa.
Sunahsepa now reached Ambarisha and said let's proceed and finish the Yagnam without any delay.
Ambarisha now reached his Yagnam and following the instructions of his priest carried on the Yagnam.
They tied up Sunahsepa with Darbha and applied chandanam. While remaining bound near the Agni,
Sunahsepa followed the advice of Vishwamitra and chanted the mantras. Indra now granted long life to
Sunahsepa that very moment. Ambarisha too got the Yagnam phalam without the Bali, O Rama.
Vishwamitra continued his tapas for another thousand years at Puskara.

Sri Rama Jayam - Balakandam - Sarga 63 - Journey of Vishwamitra - Maharishi

After a thousand years of tapas, Brahma along with all the Devas came and blessed Vishwamitra that from
a Raja Rishi, he has become a Rishi for completing this tapas of a thousand years. Blessing him thus, they
returned while Vishwamitra sought to tapas again. After a long time, Vishwamitra saw the apsara Menaka
bathing in Puskara and fell prey to lust.
After spending ten years with Menaka, Vishwamitra realized that he diverted from his path of becoming a
Brahmarishi. Menaka was trembling with fear if he would curse her. Dismissing her fears, Vishwamitra now
went to the Himalayas and practiced tapas with a vow of celibacy for the rest of his life. The Devas now
prayed to Brahma to offer the Maharishi status to Vishwamitra. Brahma once again came with the Devas
and now offered the status of Maharishi to Vishwamitra.
Vishwamitra addressed Brahma and said "if you had called me Brahmarishi I would consider the fruition of
my tapas." Brahma replied, "you have not conquered your senses, strive further" so saying Brahma left to
Brahma lokam.
Sri Gurubhyo Namah
Now Vishwamitra resumed his severe tapas. Standing with his arms lifted upwards, living only on air, living
outside under the sky, Maharishi Vishwamitra did the Pancha Agni tapas in the midst of four fires on all four
sides and with the sun as the fifth during summer and standing in open air in water for days and nights in
winter. In this way he practiced tapas for a thousand years.
While Maharishi Vishwamitra was thus practicing tapas, Indra addressed Rambha, an apsara as follows.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama Rama Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam - Balakandam - Sarga 64 - Journey of Vishwamitra - Anger

Indra said that Rambha had to disrupt the tapas of Vishwamitra by luring him to passion. Rambha however
prayed to Indra saying that Vishwamitra will curse her if she disturbs him and asked to be excused.
However, Indra said "don't be afraid, accompanied by Kandarpa (Cupid), I shall also accompany you in the
form of a Kokila that delights the heart in the Vasantha Rithu. Assuming the most beautiful form divert the
mind of Vishwamitra.
Hearing the command of Indra, Rambha began to lure Vishwamitra. Distracted at first and then attracted
to Rambha and the Kokila along with the Vasantha Rithu, Vishwamitra began to doubt if this was an act of
Indra. Realizing that this was the mischief of Indra, Vishwamitra, full of anger, now cursed her "since you
tried to lure me, who is trying to control lust and anger, you shall stand as a stone image for ten thousand
years until Brahmarishi Vasistha comes and redeems you."
Now Vishwamitra realized that his stock of religious merit acquired through tapas was again exhausted by
anger. Rambha became a stone and Indra and Kandarpa slipped away. O Rama, now Vishwamitra made
a resolution in his mind "I shall no longer give way to anger nor speak on any account. I shall not breathe
for countless years. Controlling my senses I shall not get angry. Till I become a Brahmarishi I shall continue
my tapas. My limbs will not get atrophied as long as I continue tapas" thus pledging Vishwamitra decided
on his deeksha.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama! Rama! Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam - Balakandam - Sarga 65 - Journey of Vishwamitra Concludes

with Brahmanyam
Leaving the northern side of the Himalayas, Vishwamitra now left to the eastern side and began to practice
severe tapas. Undertaking a Deeksha of Mounam (Silence) for a thousand years, Vishwamitra practiced
severe tapas and became stiff as wood and overcame all obstacles that came by without getting angry.
After a thousand years, when Vishwamitra prepared some rice to eat and was about to eat, Indra came in
the guise of a Brahmin and asked for food. Offering food to the Brahmin without breaking his silence,
Vishwamitra again resumed his thousand year tapas without breathing. The tejas emanating from
Vishwamitra was filling up as smoke in all the three worlds. The celestials, Devas, Nagas, Pannagas,
Rakshasas, and Rishis rushed to Brahma. They said though tempted by anger and provoked, Vishwamitra
has overcome his senses and his Tapo Balam is rising. Not a single flaw can be seen in him. If his wish is
not granted, by his Tapo Balam he can destroy all animate and inanimate objects in all three worlds. All
quarters are filled with darkness and nothing is clearly visible. All the oceans are turbulent and mountains
are beginning to tear apart. The earth is quaking and the wind is blowing violently. People are giving up
their sacred duties, with their minds agitated all three worlds are puzzled. Please grant his wish before the
whole world is destroyed.
Brahma now appeared with all the Devas in front of Vishwamitra and addressed as follows Glory to you O
Rishi, we are pleased with your Tapas. You have attained Brahmanyam by virtue of your severe Tapas. I
further offer longevity to you. Enjoy auspiciousness and depart according to your pleasure. May Good
betide you. Pleased to hear Brahmas blessings, Vishwamitra said If Brahmanyam as well as long life
have been secured by me, let me be knowledgeable of OM karam, Vasat Karam, Vedas and Upanishads.
Let the complete Kshatriya Knowledge and Brahmana Knowledge be known to me and let Vasistha address
me as a Brahmarishi.
Upon the request of Devas, Vasistha now addressed Vishwamitra as Brahmarishi and welcomed him to
Brahmanyam saying every desire of yours shall be fulfilled. Saying so, Brahma along with all the Devas
left. Having become Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, he traversed the whole world. In this way O Rama,
Brahmanyam was achieved by Brahmarishi Vishwamitra in this birth itself without having to change his
body. O Rama, he is the foremost among the Brahmarishis, he is the other name for Tapo Balam, he is a
dharma atman, he is a stronghold in courage and pain, he is supreme virtue personified and he is the
highest and perennial abode of prowess. Saying so, Satananda became silent.
Raja Janaka now did Namaskaram to Brahmarishi Vishwamitra in the presence of Rama and Lakshmana
and said Dhanyosmi. I am fortunate that you have come to see my Yagnam with Rama and Lakshmana. I
feel holy by your darshan. Manifold benefits have been derived by me by your darshan and hearing your
journey to Brahmanyam at length as told by Satananda. Understanding your Tapo Balam is beyond me,
immeasurable is your strength. It is time for Sandhya Vandanam, so I shall take leave. Tomorrow morning
be pleased to visit me with Rama and Lakshmana. Saying so Janaka and all his ministers did a
Pradakshinam to Brahmarishi Vishwamitra and returned to Mithila.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama! Rama! Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!
Elders pause and make several observations after narrating this story of Brahmarishi Vishwamitra. The
power of Eastern direction (Esanyam) for all virtuous deeds, the power of Mahapurusha Darshanam. The
Brahmanyam that we take for granted, the ease at which we exhaust all our spiritual merit through anger
and other vices.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 66 Sita Kalyanam Ayonija Sita Pirati
The next day after finishing his morning puja, Raja Dasaratha sent people to welcome Brahmarishi
Vishwamitra along with Rama and Lakshmana. Having welcomed them according to the scriptures, Janaka
said to Brahmarishi Vishwamitra Instruct me as to what I can do for you.
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra replied These two Kshatriya princes, sons of Dasaratha are eager to see the
Maha Shiva Dhanus that exists with you. Please show it to them. With their desire fulfilled through the sight
of the bow, they will return.
Raja Janaka now began to tell the history on how this Maha Shiva Dhanus is at his kingdom and the
discovery of Ayonija Sita Pirati. Nimis eldest son was Raja Devarata and this Maha Shiva Dhanus was
given to him by the Devas. Rudra pulled the string of this bow during the Daksha Yagnam for the destruction
of all that did not offer Havis. The Devas then did Saranagathi to Bhagavan Shankar and with grace
Bhagavan Shiva gave this Dhanus to the Devas. The Devas in turn gave the Maha Shiva Dhanus to my
forefather Devarata.
Immediately after that there arose from the track of ploughshare as I was ploughing the plot for Yagnam, a
female baby who was discovered while dressing the field who is now known as Sita. This foster daughter
of mine, Ayonija, that emerged from the soil, gradually grew at an extraordinary pace. Because she is a
Ayonija, I have decided that she can be won only by Virya Sulkam. Many rulers have come to Mithila and
tried to string the Maha Shiva Dhanus but they failed. Humiliated, all the rulers besieged Mithila. As a result
of the seize, all my resources got depleted in twelve months. I then did a Tapas and the Devas being
pleased with me conferred a chatur Anga Sena (horses, elephants, chariots and infantry). Being hard hit
with this Sena the kings fled. I shall show the Maha Dhanus to Rama and Lakshmana. O Brahmarishi, if
Rama strings the Maha Shiva Dhanus, I shall give away Ayonija Sita Pirati to the son of Dasaratha.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 67 Sita Kalyanam Aropayat Sa

Dharma Atman Sa Lilam Iva Tat Dhanus
Hearing the narration of Raja Janaka, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra said Please show the Maha Shiva Dhanus
to Rama. Raja Janaka instructed his counsellors Let the heavenly bow adorned with Chandanam and
flowers be brought here. Following the order of Raja Janaka, five thousand unusually tall and well-built
men, whose luster resembled that of Devas, somehow managed to pull the Manjusham (Chest) containing
the Maha Shiva Dhanus, that was mounted on eight wheels.
Raja Janaka now addressed Brahmarishi Vishwamitra This excellent bow has been worshiped by all the
Kings of Mithila. Though they were powerful, none could actually even bend it. Not even Devas, Rakshasas,
Gandharvas, Yakshas, Kinnaras, Nagas were able to string it or estimate its weight. How then can these
poor humans string the bow? This bow, the best of all has been brought before you. Kindly show it now to
the two princes.
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra now said Child Rama, behold the bow

Opening the Manjusham at that instance and seeing the Maha Shiva Dhanus, Rama said I hereby hold
with my hand this excellent heavenly bow and shall try to toss it on my palms and even bend it. Amen said
the king and Brahmarishi. At that instance, Rama sport fully seized the bow at the middle. The glorious son
of Raghu Kulam, Dharma Atman Rama strung the bow as though in sport while many thousands of men
stood looking on. Having set the string to the bow, the highly illustrious Rama bent the bow and lo! The bow
broke in the middle. A great noise reverberating like a crash of thunder issued from it even as it broke and
a violent earthquake followed in its wake as it would in the event of a mountain cracking. Stunned by that
crash, all men present there toppled down barring of course Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Raja Janaka, Rama
and Lakshmana.
On the people there recovering from the shock and feeling reassured, the king whose misgivings have been
set to rest, did a namaskaram to Brahmarishi Vishwamitra and said The prowess of Rama, son of
Dasaratha has been witnessed by me. This feat was inconceivable. Having secured Rama as her husband,

Sita will fetch renown to the race of Janakas. My pledge that Sita can be won only by Virya Sulkam stands
redeemed today. Sita Kalyanam has to happen now. With your permission, let my counsellors proceed to
Ayodhya and inform Raja Dasaratha of the Virya Sulkam and the Kalyanam that has to happen now and
welcome them here.
With the permission of Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, Raja Janaka now sent his counsellors to Ayodhya in
preparation of Sita Kalyanam.

Consents for Sita Kalyanam
The messengers that Raja Janaka sent, arrived in three days to Ayodhya. They meet Raja Dasaratha and
see his godly stature. They did a namaskaram to Raja Dasaratha and conveyed the message of Raja
Janaka.
Raja Janaka enquires about your welfare and prosperity. He also enquires about your Kula Guru and your
subjects. He has sent us in the presence of Brahmarishi Vishwamitra. It is well known that I have declared
Virya Sulkam for my daughter Sita and several kings tried but failed. Your son arrived at Mithila guided by
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra and has broken the Maha Shiva Dhanus thereby winning the Virya Sulkam. Sita
is the bounty of bravery and keeping up my promise I have to give Sita in marriage to Rama. I seek your
consent for this. Keeping your Kula Guru and other Brahmins ahead of you, it would be apt for you to come
to Mithila for the wedding. You will also derive delight by seeing your sons here. This is the message of
Raja Janaka that we carry to you that was conveyed in the presence of Brahmarishi Vishwamitra and
Satananda.
Raja Dasaratha addressed his Gurus Vasistha, Vamadeva and others. Rama is at Mithila with Lakshmana
and Brahmarishi Vishwamitra. On observing the valor of Rama, Raja Janaka wants to give Sita in marriage
to Rama. If you are all in favor of this alliance, lets proceed to Mithila without delay. The ministers agreed
and they decided to travel the next day. The messengers of Janaka enjoyed the hospitality in Ayodhya for
that night.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama! Rama! Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Reaches Mithila
The next day Raja Dasaratha said to his minister Sumantra in the presence of his Kula Guru and other
Brahmins. Send some people on my behalf with all the riches, gems and other items given from the
bridegrooms side and let them travel in advance. Send my chatur Anga Sena ahead of us and let everyone
travel as per their convenience in palanquins, horses, sedan chairs, chariots etc. Let the Brahmins Vasistha,
Vamadeva, Jabali, Kasyapa, Markandeya and Katyayana travel in the forefront and arrange for horses for
my chariot.
Thus they left with some Chatur Anga Sena forward and some backward guarding the procession.
Travelling for four days, they reached the outskirts of Mithila. Raja Janaka rushed to the outskirts of the city
and welcomed the procession. Feeling ecstatic, Raja Janaka welcomed them with due honor. Raja Janaka
now requested that Raja Dasaratha should initiate the pre marriage ceremonies the next day. Let the Kula
Gurus decide on the wedding date based on Vedas. Raja Dasaratha agreed and Raja Janaka was pleased.
Then, Rama with Brahmarishi Vishwamitra leading him and Lakshmana following, touched his fathers feet.
They then spent the night happily.

Kusadhwaja were seated, Raja Janaka asked Sudamana, a counsellor to invite Raja Dasaratha along with
this priests, sons and counsellors. Raja Dasaratha now arrived with his side of people and after settling
down, said that Vasistha is the foremost in his kingdom and is the spokesmen in all matters. Then, with the

Satrughna Marriage
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra and Vasistha now addressed Raja Janaka The royal houses of Ikswaku and
Videha are inconceivably great and immeasurably glorious. The sacred alliance between these two houses
is well matched in physical charm and riches. There is more to be said on this. Please hear my council O
Janaka. I ask for the hands of Kusadhwaja daughters for Bharata and Satrughna, sons of Dasaratha. All
the four sons of Dasaratha are full of charm as well as youth, equal in prowess to Devas as well of guardians
of earth. Through these marriages let the house of Ikswaku be bound.
Hearing the proposal Raja Janaka accepted the proposal. Let all the four mighty princes marry the four
princes on the same day. The wise concede that Prajapathi Bhaga, that presides over progeny is favorable
on Uttara Phalguni. So let the wedding happen on that day. Please consider me and Mithila as yours and
you have full authority on me and Mithila. Please do what you feel is fit.
Raja Dasaratha then blessed Raja Janaka and Kusadhwaja and returned to his tent. Raja Dasaratha then
did the Shraddha Karma and the following day the Samavartana ceremony was done for all four sons.
According to Dharma, Raja Dasaratha then did thousands of Go Dhanam for the sake of his sons. Raja

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 73 Sita Kalyanam Ramasya Loka

Ramasya Kriyam Vaivahikim Prabho
On the same day that Raja Dasaratha did the Samavartana Ceremony, Yadhajit, son of the King of Kekaya
arrived. Yadhajit enquired about the welfare of all and mentioned that his father is eager to see his
grandson, Bharata and so he went to Ayodhya. When he heard of the wedding in Ayodhya, he rushed here
to attend Bharatas wedding. Raja Dasaratha gave him the due respect and spent the night with all.
The next day morning, after finishing Sandhya Vandanam and other rituals, along with the Rishis, his sons
and others, Raja Dasaratha reached the Yagna Vatika, a place where the wedding was going to happen.
Dressed in Kalyana Vastram, Rama along with his brothers arrived at Vijaya Muhurtham, known for bringing
success to any enterprise undertaken. Kula Guru Vasistha now asked Raja Janaka to carry out the sacred
obligation of Sita Kalyanam.
Raja Janaka said that his daughters have already arrived at the Yagna Vatika. Now, everyone proceeded
to the place within the Yagna Vatika where the Yagnam has to be done. Raja Janaka requested Vasistha
to perform Rama Vivaham Ramasya Loka Ramasya Kriyam Vaivahikim Prabho. Along with other sages,
O pious Guru, conduct the Vivaham of Rama, the delight of the world.
Along with Brahmarishi Vishwamitra and Satananda, Vasistha now prepared for the Yagnam as a part of
the Vivaham. According to the scriptural ordinance, the altar where Agni is to be invoked was decorated
with Chandanam, Flowers, Palikai, sprouts in earthen pots with holes to let the water drain with concave
lids, Agarbatti, Sankha Patrai, shruvaih, srugbhih used for offering ghee into the Agni, Arghyam, Padyam
for offering, Laja Purnaih Patribhih vessel full of Nel Pori (puffed rice), Akshata and equal sized Darbha
on all four sides while reciting the mantras. Vasistha now did the Laja homam while offering Agni.
Now, Sita was brought in front of the sacred Agni and made to sit opposite to Rama. After reciting the
mantras, when the auspicious time came, Raja Janaka did the Pani Grahanam by releasing the sacred
water from his hands into Ramas hands stating this:

iyam siitaa mama sutaa saha dharma carii tava
pratiicCha ca enaam bhadram te paaNim gRihNiiShva paaNinaa
This Sita, my daughter, is going to be your helpmate in discharging your sacred obligations. Take her hand
in your own and accept her as your own. May Good betide you. She is highly fortunate and will remain
exclusively devoted to you, her husband and will follows you as a shadow.
At that time the celestials sounded kettledrums and showered an abundance of flowers. Having done the
Pani Grahanam of Sita, Raja Janaka now did the same for Urmila with Lakshmana, Mandavi with Bharata
and Srutakirthi with Satrughna.
Then, holding the hands of their brides, the sons of Dasaratha did Pradakshinam to Agni, Janaka and the
Rishis and the rest of the wedding ceremony was conducted according to the scriptures. Loud beating of
celestial kettledrums, melodious sounds of vocal and instrumental music rained from the heaven along with
an abundance of flowers. The Gandharvas sang, blowing of Sankha was heard while the divine couple
along with their siblings were going around Agni three times.
With the completion of the wedding, Raja Dasaratha returned to his tent along with his sons and daughters
in law, Rishis and Counsellors.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 74 Sita Kalyanam Parasurama

Taking leave of Raja Janaka and Raja Dasaratha, Brahmarishi Vishwamitra proceeded directly from there
to Himalayas. Raja Dasaratha also proceeded towards Ayodhya. At that time Raja Janaka gave lakhs of
cows, carpets, clothes (both silk and cotton), Chatur Anga Sena, hundred beautiful maids, servants, servant
maids, lot of silver, gold, pearls and coral beads. Then Raja Janaka returned to Mithila from the marriage
hall (Yagna Vatika).
Placing the Rishis in front, Raja Dasaratha also proceeded towards Ayodhya. Enroute they saw that fearful
birds began to cry all around them, an omen that indicates that a grave danger is imminent. On the other
hand, some deers crossed Raja Dasarathas path from the left, a good omen. Raja Dasaratha expressed
his worry to Vasistha by enquiring what this meant. Vasistha informed him that a danger is eminent but will
pass and there is nothing to worry.
While they were conversing thus, a tornado set in uprooting tall trees, shaking the globe. The sun got
enveloped with darkness and all people failed to see with the dust blowing heavily. Except Vasistha, Raja
Dasaratha and his four sons, all the rest lost their consciousness.
In the dreadful darkness covered with dust, Raja Dasaratha saw the terrible looking son of Jamadagni,
Parasurama, the destroyer of Kshatriyas, born in the race of Bhrigu, wearing Jatamandalam, glorious like
Mount Kailasa, as a destructive fire, blazing in effulgence like Bhagavan Shiva. Seeing the Sage
Parasurama, the sages accompanying Vasistha expressed anxiety wondering if he came to destroy the
Kshatriyas again. Vasistha and the sages now offered water to Sage Parasurama. Accepting the water,
Sage Parasurama spoke to Rama, the son of Dasaratha.
Sri Krishnarpanamastu! Rama! Rama! Rama! Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya!

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 75 Vaishnava Dhanus

Parasurama said he has heard of Ramas might and the breaking of the Maha Shiva Dhanus. Parasurama
invited Rama to take on the Vaishnava Dhanus that he bought, string it and come for a combat with him.
Hearing this, Dasaratha reminded Parasurama that he has vowed to Indra and took up the life of a Rishi
after fulfilling his revenge of killing all Kshatriyas as a revenge for the killing of his father. Therefore, he
should spare his young son, Rama as Dasaratha and others in Ayodhya cannot live without Rama.
Paying a deaf year to Dasarathas pleas, Parasurama said again to Rama that there are two well architected
Dhanus in the universe, the Vaishnava Dhanus and the Shiva Dhanus that he had already broken. The
Shiva Dhanus was used by Bhagavan Shiva during the Tripurasura Samharam and later passed on to
Janaka. The other bow is Vaishnava Dhanus that is equal to Shiva Dhanus and a terror to enemies.
Parasurama tells the legend of the past when Devas wanted to find out if Shiva is superior or Vishnu is
superior after the Tripurasura Samharam and approached Bharma. Brahma created a situation where there
was a combat between Shiva and Vishnu. During that combat, the Maha Shiva Dhanus was rendered
inoperative and Shiva was stuck motionless by the Hum Karam that Vishnu made. When the Devas then
proclaimed Vishnu as superior, Shiva gave this bow to Janakas forefather. Vishnu gave this Vaishnava
Dhanus to Sage Rcika, son of Bhrigu. Rcika gave it to my father Jamadagni, who gave it to me. Jamadagni
was too good and led a life of a Rishi. He was killed by Sahasrabahu Arjuna. Hearing my fathers most cruel
and unmerited death I uprooted the earth of Kshatriyas 21 times as and when they were born. Later I gave
this Vaishnava Dhanus to Sage Kasyapa and went to Mount Mahendra for tapas.
I expeditiously arrived here hearing the sound of the broken Shiva Dhanus. O Rama, being a Kshatriya,
accept my challenge for the combat, take this bow and mount an arrow for combating me. Thus Parasurama
challenged Rama.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 76 Vaishnava Darshanam

Rama, now addressed Parasurama. I have heard of the revenge you took for your fathers death. Since
you despise me as powerless, O Parasurama, witness by glory and prowess today. Saying so, Rama seized
the Vaishnava Dhanus, arrow and the divine energy from Parasurama by his touch. Mounting the arrow on
the Vaishnava Dhanus, Rama said, you are worthy of respect being a Brahmana and being related to
Brahmarishi Vishwamitra. Therefore, I shall not hurl the arrow at you. Instead, I shall take away the power
of unobstructed movement across the three worlds that you have acquired by your Tapo Balam. This
Vaishnava Dhanus will not fail without succeeding in its goal.
Along with Brahma, all celestials including Rishis, Nagas, Gandharvas, Siddhas, Charanas, Kinnaras, and
Yakshas assembled in the sky on their aerial vehicles to witness Rama shooting the arrow of the Vaishnava
Dhanus. People gathered around to witness.
Parasurama being rendered powerless dazed at the brilliance, Tejas of Rama and spoke in low voice. After
I gave this Bhumi to Sage Kasyapa, he ordered that I cant stay on earth. So I never stay on earth in the
night and return to Mount Mahendra with the speed of thought. I have acquired peerless worlds through by
Tapas. Put an end to them by your arrow, O Rama. I conclude that you are Vishnu, Madhusudhana. I am
not ashamed to be made powerless in front of all the Devas and celestials as it is none other than Bhagavan
Vishnu, the lord of all that has rendered me powerless. Release the arrow and I shall return to Mount
Mahendra.
Even as Parasurama was speaking, Rama released the arrow and rid the darkness of the peerless worlds
acquired by Parasurama by his Tapas. The celestials glorified Rama seeing him with the Vaishnava
Dhanus. Parasurama did a pradakshinam to Rama and immediately returned to Mount Mahendra.

Sri Rama Jayam Balakandam Sarga 77 Valmiki Maharshi Concludes

Balakandam
After Parasurama left, Rama entrusted his Vaishnava Dhanus with Varuna. Approaching Dasaratha with
the Brahmanas leading, Rama said to his father, Parasurama has left. Let us proceed towards Ayodhya.
Dasaratha took Rama into his arms and smelt his crown as a gesture of love for this son. Then, with his
entire retinue they reached the festive looking Ayodhya where its citizens were blowing trumpets and
throwing flowers in joy.
Some citizens and Brahmins met Dasaratha and others in the outskirts of Ayodhya and welcomed them
home. Thus having reached the glorious palace, the queens did the Gruhapravesham for their daughtersin-law amidst the chanting of Vedic mantram. They further took them in and had them do puja to the Kula
Divam. This was followed by homam welcoming them in the most auspicious way.
All the people were very happy. Rama and his brothers enjoyed their stay in Ayodhya with their wives while
serving their father. By now they had mastered the use of various missiles and weapons and lived happily
with family and friends.
After some time, Dasaratha said to Bharata that his maternal uncle Yudhajit is here hoping to take Bharata
to Kekaya for some time. Seeking permission from Dasaratha, Rama and his mothers, Bharata left to
Kekaya with Satrughna. He was well received by his grandfather upon reaching Kekaya.
Rama began to serve his father. Placing his fathers command above all, he served the citizens in every
way. He served his mothers and attended to all important business in Ayodhya. In this way, Rama won the
love of Brahmanas, Vaishyas (traders) and all people in the kingdom. He outshone his brothers with his
merit. Ramas heart was with Sita and thus he spent several months with her. Because of Sitas nature she
could win over Ramas heart. Rama too won Sitas heart. United in wedlock, Rama and Sita looked
charming and full of joy just as Vaikuntha Ranga and Lakshmi.
Balakandam Sampoornam.
