A.COURSEDESCRIPTION
ThiscourseisPartI(oftwo)ofthestudyofcarboncompounds.Followingthefunctionalgroup
approach,thecourseorganizesorganiccompoundsintofamilies,eachfamilypossessingagiven
functionalgroup(suchashydroxylgroupOH,carbonylgroupC=O).Thismethodoftreatment
highlightstheoverridingthemeinorganicchemistry,namely,thatthestructureoforganiccompounds
determinestheirpropertiesandreactivities.Ifoneknowsthestructure,onecanpredict(oratleast
explain)acompoundspropertiesorreactions.Thecoursebeginswitharequisitereviewofnotionsof
atomicorbitals,formationofbonds,bondproperties,inductiveandmesomericeffects,conjugationand
resonance,basicnotionsofthermodynamics,kineticsandstereochemistry.Applicationofthese
principlesinthestepbystepdescriptionoforganicreactions(reactionmechanisms),allow
rationalizingreactionsintermsofthestructureofcompoundsundergoingthereaction.Thismakes
organicchemistryafascinatingstudy.Spectroscopy(IR,HNMR,13CNMR,MS,UvVis),asetofpowerful
methodsfordeterminingmolecularstructure,isintroducedandhelpstomakepalpablyrealthe
structuresofcompoundsinthedifferentfamilies.Reactionsarediscussedinrelationtofreeenergy
changes,activationenergy,andarevisualizedthroughfreeenergydiagrams.
