Robinson Sand and Gravel Chief Financial Officer Jan
Ferreira, Auburn Journals 2015
Businesswoman of the Year isnt
exactly the face of the company,
but shes one of the crucial elements that keeps the business a
thriving Auburn mainstay.
Im used to being behind
the scenes, so winning is a total
surprise, Ferreira said.
One of her strengths is maintaining the company bottom
line while taking into account
the needs of her employees.
In addition to the countless
hours she spends managing
the many branches of our company, she still finds the time
to check in and listen to our
needs, said employees Thomas Stinebaugh, Janet Sneed and
Shelly Papadopoulous.
Managing her position is a
seven-day-a-week task. Among
Ferreiras duties with the company are keeping Robinsons
compliant in the trucking industry, managing bills for the
paving department, and keeping up with the rigorous safety standards that come with
running a business adjacent to
construction.
Despite the economic downturn, Robinson Sand and Gravel has had a busy year, adapt-

maintenance and landscaping

reasons theyve remained so
successful. Customers looking
to save water while beautifying
their yards have turned to Robinson to trade in their fescue
for bark and rock.

Ferreira said. Its allowed
us to remain strong all these
years.
Connie Watson of Echo Valley

praises Ferreiras business ethic.
Jan is a get it done type of
person who leads her company

there is as humble as the one

She serves us by working

When she does have time
to wind down, Ferreira enjoys
spending time with her family, camping in mountains and
deserts, as well as the occasional off-road excursion.
And while Ferreira nearly always has her hands full, shes

her son Seth Ferreira.
She never has an excuse, always gets the job done no matter what, Seth Ferreira said. If
my dad would let her, she would

Merrill Powers
What does it mean to you
to be nominated for Business Woman of the Year?

I am honored to be
nominated for the Auburn
Journals Business Woman of the Year.
I moved to Auburn from
Southern California seven years ago, and opened
my private practice in
psychotherapy. Moving
to the Sierra foothills is
the fulfillment of the goal
Ive had since I graduated
from Berkeley a lifetime
ago. While Ive lived in
many places in the United States and abroad, Ive
made Auburn my forever home. Therefore, with
the nomination for Business Woman of the Year,
I feel honored by Auburn
for my determination to
be not just a resident, but a
contributing community
member.
How would you describe
the business climate in and
around Auburn?

I would describe the

business climate in Auburn to be open and ready
to accept those who are
willing to work hard to
be a part of the community. In the seven years
Ive lived here, Ive seen
many businesses come
and go. Auburn is a community that values its traditions. It can be difficult
for an innovative business. However, those who
provide quality products
and services that meet
the needs of the community are able to find
success along with those
local,
long-established
businesses that claim the
loyalty of Auburnites. Auburn has residents whose
roots go back generations;
but those more recently

are bringing innovation,
creativity, and expanding
the appeal of the town to
visitors. Here, we have the
best of both worlds: tradition and history, with creativity and new trends.
How has your business
dealt with the economic
downturn of the past few
years, or have you seen an
upswing in business?

Because my private
practice is private pay
only, I have seen my business challenged by the
economic downturn and
by the expansion of insurance coverage. However, I
specialize in EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is much
faster and more structured than the traditional
talk therapy. My clients
experience change that
can be permanent and
relatively quick; therefore,
they appreciate the value
of the service they pay for.
My client load remains
fairly stable as a result. In
fact, I am searching for an
intern to work under my
supervision so that I can
serve more clients, and for
lower fees.
How are you involved in
the community?

My community involvement is extensive. In addition to providing help

with an intern accepting
sliding scale for those who
cannot afford my fee, I
provide weekly therapy

to veterans free of charge

through The Soldiers
Project, of which I was a
founding member in January 2009. I also offered
free crisis recovery for victims of the 49er fire that
year. Several years ago I
organized EMDR Therapists from the Foothills
and Sacramento region
into the EMDR Trauma
Recovery Network (TRN).
Our mission is to respond
to community disasters, such as fires, school
shootings, floods, and
earthquakes with a maximum of five EMDR sessions to prevent the onset
of PTSD, using a special
protocol for processing recent events.
Professionally, I am the
regional coordinator for
the greater Sacramento
region for the EMDR professional association, EMDRIA (EMDR International Association). My role is
to provide ongoing professional training and development for other EMDR
therapists in the area,
with monthly meetings
and occasional advanced
training workshops with
visiting experts. I am a
consultant for EMDR
therapists and I am undergoing training to be a
trainer of EMDR for EMDR
HAP (Humanitarian Assistance Program), whose
mission is to provide low
cost EMDR training for
therapists who work in
non-profit settings.
On Oct. 22, I depart for
Uganda, where I will participate in training Ugandan therapists in EMDR.
This will be my second
trip to teach in Uganda.
Last year, in addition to facilitating the basic EMDR
training.

What do you do for fun?

While my work brings

me fulfillment and inspiration, I also enjoy
the fabulous activities
that Auburn offers! I
hike and kayak regularly. When there is snow,
I love to snowshoe and
cross-country ski. Nature renews me; I find
joy simply looking out
my windows over the
American River canyon
and the mountains beyond. I regularly go to
yoga, and meditate when
Im disciplined, practicing the mindfulness that
I preach to my clients.
If its too hot or rainy to
hike, I exercise daily at
the Auburn Racquet and
Fitness Club. I make sure

to enjoy the Auburn Art

Walks and Open Studio
Tours. My husband and
I enjoy music and other
events at the State Theatre, which we financially support, as well as the
Auburn Symphony. We
love the outdoor music
concerts in the summer
at the library and at Regional Park. We dine out
often locally, and we fervently hope someone will
turn the Auburn Drug
Co into an old-fashioned
ice cream parlor offering
homemade ice cream and
desserts especially into
the evening, to enjoy after
an event at the State Theatre! Im a regular at the
Auburn Farmers Market chatting with the

farmers is a highlight of
my week. I have fun helping my husband, who is
retired, make wine from
our home vineyard. We
regularly attend meetings
and events for the Placer
County Wine and Grape
Association (PCWGA). I
have two adult children:
my daughter lives locally
and is attending Sac State
for her Masters in School
Psychology. I have two
grandchildren who live
with their father my
son and their mother
in Los Angeles. And four
grandchildren from my
step-son, who also live in
Southern California. In
short I have a very full
life, thanks to all that Auburn has to offer!

Hillary Coury
What does it mean to you to be
nominated for Business Woman
of the Year?

It is a great honor to be nominated for Business Woman of

the year. Above all else I am
thankful for the company environment that I am apart of
here at TGH Aviation for allowing myself to step into the role
as Sales & Marketing Manager.
I am proud of the accomplishments I have made and look
forward to being a positive
role model to both other women and to my son, which is the
reason I work so hard. Being of
a house where we have a slight
role reversal in regards to
whom is the caretaker for my
three year old, this is a great accomplishment for me. To know
that my long hours and dedication can be transferred over to
a tangible accomplishment is

lot of the aircraft that fly in to

and that reason alone. I am so
fortunate to be able to call this
community our home base of

extraordinary. I am very proud

of not only my own achievement but also that of my company for being open minded
enough to see what I have to offer. I would like to thank Richard Anderson, TGH Aviation
President, for allowing me the
opportunities that he has.
How would you describe the
business climate in and around
Auburn?

When doing business in Auburn, reputation is everything.

I have found that even though

my company has clientele both
domestically and internationally, we are extremely focused
on putting our best foot forward at all times. TGH Aviation maintains two aspects of
the business that are strong on
customer referrals, our Installation Hangar and also TGH
Airport Shop, both of which
are located out at the Auburn
Airport. Another strong point
for us is the fact that we are located in such a gorgeous city. A

How has your business dealt

with the economic downturn of
the past few years, or have you
seen an upswing in business?

Luckily for us TGH Aviation

maintains several domestic
and foreign military contracts
which provides us with a clientele base from all over the
world. Although we have seen
some trends fall within the local area most we can attribute
to changes in the industry and
not so much the local culture.
With that being said one positive note is that on a regular
basis I hear a consumer note
that they would prefer to keep

the money local, which is just

a statement to how aware our
community is of this issue.
How are you involved in the
community?

I have been part of the Air

Show for the past five years,
as well as, a strong supporter
through the company of quite
a few local events. TGH Aviation has been a sponsor for the
Lets Never Forget Series, the
Bud Anderson Statue Dedication and Sutter Auburn Faith
Hospital Gala annually.
What do you do for fun?

In my spare time I am a full

time mother to a three year
old named Dylan. When I have
time I love to get out of the
house to snap a few pictures
as well as I am a spoken word
poet.

arris Industrial Gases is the largest

independent industrial gas and welding
supply distributor in the greater Sacramento
area, with three conventional locations
and a specialty gas fill plant. In a traditionally maledominated industry, Norma Marani Harris and
Kathleen Harris have seen the business not only

Harris family tradition of providing exceptional
customer service for companies both large and small.

We want to thank all our old and new customers for
