EDUCATION- NEED AND IMPORTANCE

INTRODUCTION
an account of activities and events concerned with the development of disciplined inquiry in
mathematics education as a flourishing academic enterprise is called research in mathematics
education. Al though mathematics has been taught and learned for millennia, until the past century or
so have the nature and quality of teaching and learning mathematics been studied in any a serious
manner .clay tablets from ancient Babylonia(c 1900 BC to 1600),for example, show that students in
the scribal school were expected to solve problems involving quadratic polynomials, but no available
evidence indicates how much drill and practice either they received or their instructors thought they
needed.
Mathematics research is the long-tem,open-endend expioration of a set of related mathematics
questions whose answer connect to and build upon each other.

RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION


Mathematics research is the log-term, open-ended exploration of a set
of related mathematics questions whose answer connect to and build upon each other. Problems are
open-ended because students continually come up with new questions to ask based on their
observations
THE CHAEACTERISTICS OF STUDEN REASERACH INCLUDE:

Students develop questions, approaches, and results, that are ,at least for them,

original products.
Students use the same general methods used by research mathematics. they work through cycles of

data gathering , visualization , abstraction , conjecturing and proof.


Students communicate mathematically describing their thinking ,writing definitions and conjectures,

using symbols, justifying their conclusions, and reading mathematics .


When the research involves a class or other group the students become a community of
mathematicians sharing and building on each others questions, conjectures and
theorems.

BENEFITS FROM DOING MATHEMATICS RESEARCH


Mathematics research influences student learning in a number of way.

Research provided students with and understanding of what it means to do mathematics and

of mathematics as a living , growing field.


Writing mathematics and problem solving become central to students learning

mathematics skills. During an investigation, students make connections between ideas that

further enhance retention.


Students develop their own mathematical aesthetic as they practices making choices about

which aspects of a problem to investigate.


Students develop both confidence as mathematics .the creativity , problems solving ,
surprises and accomplishments that are part of research help to answer students questions
about the value of studying mathematics they are studying new methods so that they can
answer their own questions. They are learning in order to do work tat they care about at that
moment.

Doing research is challenging and can be frustrating students commitments to persistence and
to learned for frustration grow as they are supported, encouraged ,and given repeated

opportunity to think about and succeed with problems over days and weeks.
Students learn to listing between different levels of evidence and to be skeptical in the face of
anecdotal evidence. The habit of looking for critical thinkers in all aspects of life.

NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICS


EDUCATION

Mathematics research is important because incredibly useful concept like cryptography and
calculus and image signal processing have and continue to come from mathematics and are

helping people solve real world problems.


Mathematics research is important because it is beautiful , it is an act form , and more than

that , an ancient and collaborative at form, performed by an entire community .


Mathematics research is important because it trains peoples to think abstractly and to have a
skeptical mindset .
Research in mathematics education has primarily two purposes :first to

better understand the nature of mathematical thinking , teaching and learning :and second to use such
knowledge in practices for learning and teaching mathematics . it is generally acknowledged that
mathematics education has a social ,and political dimension comprises also other educational sciences
and disciplines as sociology , psychology , anthropology, linguistics , philosophy and more recently
also neuroscience.
Over the last decades there have been many initiatives to reform mathematics
education. One direction has been to shift form learning abstract concepts and procedures to engaging
students with more concede and problem solving activities. This shift has been attended with a
change , more fundamenta1lly,from the passive absorption of decontentualised mathematical
knowledge towards an active construction of knowledge by learners based on the modeling of reality
. the ultimate goal of student learning is claimed to be the apparent decline of interest in mathematics
at compulsory and pre-18 school level and the level of performance of students leaving high school.

CONCLUSION

Mathematics is an exciting and challenging subject which continues to develop at a


rapid rate across many research areas. it has a natural elegance and beauty taking a real world
problems and creating and applying mathematical models to aid understanding is often highly
satisfying and rewarding
