vote took place on the selection of a radio interface for the third generation mobile system called UMTS.
198 Members of ETSI voted. The results are as follows:
Alpha concept (W-CDMA) 61,1%
Beta concept 0%
Gamma concept (Wide-Band TDMA) 0,2%
Delta concept (TD
(TD-CDMA)

Because a 71% majority required by the ETSI Technical Working Procedures was not reached, discussions will continue tomorrow.
Agreement reached on radio interface for third generation mobile system, UMTS
On the second day of the ETSI SMG 24 bis meeting which was held on 28-29 January 1998 in Paris, France, an agreement was
reached by consensus on the radio interface for the third generation mobile system. The solution, called UTRA, draws on both
W-CDMA and TD-CDMA technologies.
The 316 delegates attending the SMG 24 bis meeting, representing telecoms manufacturers, operators, administrations and
research bodies, agreed on the following technical solution:
In the paired band (FDD - Frequency Division Duplex) of UMTS the system adopts the radio access technique formerly proposed by the W-CDMA group.

The agreed solution offers a competitive continuation for GSM evolution to UMTS and will position UMTS as a leading member of
the IMT-2000 family of systems recommendations being developed in the ITU.
