Session Title: Basic Manicure Procedure
Performance Objective:
Upon completion of this assignment, the student will be able to demonstrate basic manicure
procedures to the satisfaction of the instructor.

Specific Objectives:
Explain each manicure procedure.
Construct preparation for a basic manicure.
Demonstrate basic manicure procedure.

Materials Needed:
5 to 6 envelopes
Steps to a basic manicure (6 key steps, cut into strips and placed in envelopes)
5 to 6 glue sticks
3 poster boards cut in halves
Equipment Needed:
None
Learner
Read Chapter 16 in Miladys Standard Textbook of Cosmetology.
Complete Chapter 16 outline and review questions.
Introduction
Introduction (LSI Quadrant I):
Divide students into equal groups of 3 or 4 students
Give each group an envelope filled with the 6 key steps to a basic manicure
Give the groups five minutes to put the manicure steps in procedural order and glue
them on the poster board
Post completed boards in the room and tell the students that at the end of the lesson,
the group that has the steps in the correct order will win a prize [Prize examples: candy,
free duty day, soft drink, or manicure performed by classmates]

Outline (LSI Quadrant II):
I.
Explain Basic Steps of a Manicure
Manicuring is the care of the hands and nails.
In Latin manus means hand and cura means care.
II.
Construct Preparation for a Basic Manicure
Always clean and disinfect implements.
Set up equipment. (show transparency LP26/T2)
Tools should be placed in a plastic supply tray in an organized manner on a
sanitized table.
Make sure items are placed in order of use.
Set up products.
Sanitize hands with hand gel sanitizer.

Demonstrate Basic Manicure Procedure
Greet and seat client.
SAFETY: examine hands for disease or disorders.
QUESTION: Why is it important to analyze hands for disease or disorder? To make
sure the hands and nails are free of disease or disorder and are able to receive a
manicure.]
Remove old polish with polish remover and cotton ball. (Be careful not to smear polish
on skin and nails.)
SAFETY: Re-examine nails and hands thoroughly.

File and shape nails. (show transparency LP26/T1)


Consult with your client about his/her desired shape and length of nails.
Shape nails with an emery board.
Begin with the little finger on one hand.
Always remember to file from corner to center to keep nails from splitting.
Place the hand in the finger bowl filled with soapy water to soften the cuticle.
Repeat filing, shaping, on opposite hand.
Dry clients first hand with a towel and place the other hand in the soapy water.
While drying fingertips, gently push back cuticles to loosen them.
Apply cuticle cream to the cuticles.
Push cuticles back with a cotton-tipped orangewood stick or metal pusher.
Repeat cuticle care and cleaning on opposite hand.
Brush nails of both hands in clear water.
Perform massage.(Massage procedure should have already been covered in massage
lesson)
Remove all traces of massage lotion from nails.
Use polish remover and a cotton ball.
The polish will not adhere to the nail with traces of oil on them.
Apply base coat
Begin with little finger of one hand.
Repeat polish application on other hand.
Apply two coats of polish.
Use light long strokes from nail base to free edge.
Apply polish to the middle of the nail first and then to the sides.
Repeat second coat of polish to both hands.
Remove excess polish around nail with a cotton-tipped orangewood stick.
Apply topcoat.
Apply quick-dry product

Basic Manicure Completion


Ask client if they would like to book next appointment.
Suggest retail products.
Discard used materials, replace soiled towels with fresh towels, disinfect implements
and table, and arrange all products and implements in proper order.

Application
Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III):
Instructor will demonstrate the basic manicure procedure on a student.
Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III):
The students will pair off and perform the basic manicure procedure. The instructor will monitor
the students as they are working and provide additional instruction as needed.
Summary
Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV):
Refer to introduction activity.
Have original groups each go up and read their steps to a basic manicure from poster board.
Determine and award prize to group who has or came closest to the correct manicure steps.
Have students make corrections to responses to evaluate understanding.
Evaluation
Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III):
Teacher will monitor student progress during independent practice/application and provide
independent reteach/redirection as needed.
Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV):
Administer Exam: Students will list in order the 6 key steps to complete a basic manicure.
Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV):
During class time students will be assigned manicures to perform on clients or other students.

PREPARATION
1. Always clean and disinfect implements.
2. Set up equipment. (show transparency LP26/T2)
3. Tools should be placed in a plastic supply tray in an organized manner on a
sanitized table.
4. Make sure items are placed in order of use.
5. Set up products.
6. Sanitize hands with hand gel sanitizer.

MANICURE PROCEDURE

1.Use polish remover and a cotton ball.
2.The polish will not adhere to the nail with
traces of oil on them.
Apply base coat
