Background
Status
Original requirement comes form fatigue test performed during initial certification: bolt
frequent inspection defined in order not to have a very low life limit due to bolt failure
during test.
Fatigue test results reviewed during 7000 Kg ITOW kit certification leading to interval
extension to 402 FH.
MI62-06 interval extension published within AMPI Chapter IV, 3rd Issue, Change 4 (March
3rd 2015).
12
Background
Evaluate to increase AMPI Chapter 5 inspection tolerances from current 50 FH to 100
FH.
Status
All the tasks (39) coming from SRS analyses can accept a tolerance extension.
Rotors tasks (13), transmission tasks (17) and structure tasks (3) analysis completion
within 3Q 2015.
The target for the completion of the activity is 4Q 2015.
IN PROGRESS
13
Background
Oil sample campaign to substantiate extension of the servicing interval from current 300
FH to 600 FH agreed and defined.
Six MGBs from three different Customers (CHC, Weststar, Chevron) to be monitored at
300 FH and 600 FH to compare oil characteristics.
Oil collection campaign completed.
CLOSED
Status
Laboratory analysis confirmed oil characteristics at 300 FH and 600 FH within
specification.
Scuffing test completed on oil samples confirming no oil degradation at 600 FH
compared to 300 FH and new oil.
Micro pitting tests completed confirming oil performances up to 600 FH.
SMC 63-11 interval extended from 300 FH to 600 FH within AMPI Chapter V, Issue 6,
Change 9 (April 15th 2015).
14
Background
Based on the MGB oil campaign, AW decided to launch a sample campaign on IGB/TGB
oil (without extension trial) to compare results from IGB/TGB samples with MGB ones;
based on the results servicing interval extension will be evaluated (potential extension
campaign will be necessary).
IN PROGRESS
Status
Oil sample campaign launched with the support of: Weststar, Bond, CHC and Bristow
(US).
First sample received, to be sent to external lab for analysis.
Complete campaign results expected within 3Q 2015.
15
Background
Evaluate the possibility to rely on numbers (non rounded to next scheduled 300/600
etc...) to gain tolerance/margins on AMPI Chapter IV intervals.
Status
Considering that a complete review of the AMPI Chapter IV intervals is not feasible,
Operators requested to evaluate the margin on the following MI tasks: 53-07/08/09 (and
eventually 53-01/05/06)
New full scale cabin fatigue tests at the University of Milan completed in May 2015.
Target is to demonstrate a life of 40,000 FH for the main cabin. This test will be used to
support extension of the inspection interval.
IN PROGRESS
16
Background
Evaluate the possibility to chamfer the upper deck bushing to facilitate bolt removal.
Status
MGB middle reinforcement P/N 3P5333A12253 rev D has increased hole tolerances
from 15,87-15,91 to 15,91-15,94; Rev D installed in production starting form S/N 31701
and 41501.
The following additional modification are under review:
Reinforcement chamfer increase from current 90 up to 110;
Modified anti-torque beam with larger bushing to install bolt with application of solid
lubricant available for test on a prototype.
IN PROGRESS
Based on the test final modification of the applicable drawings expected within 4Q 2015.
17
Background
Operators requested AW feedback on the possibility to use Lead acid batteries on
AW139.
AW certified in March 2014 KIT BATT. START IN PARALLEL 27AH AND 44AH P/N
4G2430F00811 to further improve starting performances; this is the basic configuration to
test Lead Acid batteries.
AW confirmed availability to test lead acid batteries on a prototype helicopter in the
parallel configuration and to share data with batteries manufacturer to support STC
approval.
CLOSED
Status
New battery in parallel (44Ah 20 Cells + 27Ah) configuration certified in March 2014.
Gill lead acid batteries tests completed on a prototype: tests confirmed same
performances between NiCad and lead acid batteries.
P&WC confirmed acceptable minimum starting torque curve requirement.
18
Background
Customers requested a plan for the design of a new pressure switch.
Status
Claverham is qualifying a new hermetically sealed pressure switch P/N 87223-85
including a physical separation between the mechanical and the electrical portion of the
switch.
The Goretex patch will be applied also to the new switch.
Qualification by Claverham completed and AW certification completed for MRA (531/532)
and TRA (731).
The new switch will be introduced during MRA upgrade and will supersede current switch
P/N 87137-81 for spares.
CLOSED
19
Background
Customers requested the possibility to perform automatic in flight EPA to save fuel
currently necessary to comply with this requirement especially for Operators operating
under Cat A.
IN PROGRESS
Status
P&WC is working to certify an STC to provide EPA automatic capability (FAST).
Hardware installation location defined.
Launch Customer identified; installation in progress based on helicopter availability.
PWC is looking for other Customers willing to install the STC.
Program divided into two phases:
Phase 1: STC to install the system and start collecting data. TCA STC approval
26/02/20015; FAA STC approval planned for end of June 2015; EASA STC approval
planned 4Q 2015.
Phase 2: 6 months of data collection after Phase 1 STC approval, software tailoring
to allow EPAC in flight and installation of final panel within March 2016.
20
Background
Customers reported cases of seat belt buckle locking system not engaged and requested
to evaluate the possibility to disassemble the components and greasing it.
CLOSED
Status
Supplier feedback is that they apply some grease for springs which are located in the
bottom of the buckle, therewith it is not possible to lubricate the buckle.
Supplier highlighted that buckles washing or cleaning could compromise the component
operation.
