1. General introduction to Chinese characters


Chinese characters are a written language that transcribes spoken Chinese. Because they
occupy a square shape, we call them "square-shaped characters". Each Chinese character is
composed of several different strokes, and the number of strokes varies greatly with each

different character. The Chinese character is one of the oldest writing systems in the world.
Dring its long history the shape they have taken has evolved continuously, but at the core it
remains the same as when it was first invented.
