What: Retelling involves having students reconstruct what they have read. As part of
retelling students engage in ordering and summarizing information and making
inferences.
Why: Summary prompts can be used to help students move beyond a literal detailed
retelling of events into a synthesis of the important elements of a story or key ideas in
an
expository text.
How:
1. Refer students to the notes in the margin that they developed as they read the
passage.
2. Present the Summary Prompt poster to the class and discuss the characteristics
of stories and informative text.
3. Have students decide which type of text they have read.
4. Model the development of a summary of the passage the students have just read.
5. For a story, say, When I summarize a story, I tell in my own words the important
things
that happened in the story. Follow along in your notes and help me develop a
summary. (Cuando hago un resumen de un cuento, digo en mis propias palabras
las
cosas importantes que ocurrieron en el cuento. Sigan en sus notas y
aydenme a desarrollar un resumen.)

6. For an informational passage, say, When I summarize an informative passage, I
tell
what I learned about the topic in my own words. Follow along in your notes and

4. Have the group check your summary against their notes to see if all of the main
details were included and correct. (If the summary was not correct or complete,
correct it.)
