President Bob Derrick called the mee ng to order at

Since there con nues to be interest sharing recom

seeking recommenda ons will have something to go on
rather than just a list that is not ac vely maintained. The

The 5K Run was a great success and Mr. Middlebusher

is on appeal. She also noted that ACCC should not
be used with the word commiee aEer it. The
board agreed.
Mr. M. Collman explained some changes to his Eagle

concern that plaques on the benches, although cheap

board suggested that he conduct his fundraisers and

The County does not vacuum leaves in Montpelier.

It is every homeowners responsibility to clear debris and

Many landscapers or yard maintenance companies do offer vacuum service for a fee

GLO in the GARDEN

Hi Neighbors,
This has been a summer of many challenges in the garden.
Early on we were blessed with rain that encouraged
growth and beauty. I planted new specimens from the
nurseries and replaced perennials that had seen beer
days. Even plants have a certain period of life. Some azaleas whos branches were split from ice storms and rewired succumbed in the oppressive heat of the late summer. Just as we like to redesign or give a fresh coat of
paint to a room, the garden may need a makeover too.
Some mes that is indicated when a plant is removed or
trimmed and an opening or pathway seems to be beckoning to be addressed.

purple berries in the Fall. Liriope can be used to compliment other plants by providing creamy white and green
leaves along side of brilliant color. It mul plies and can be
divided. Many landscapers are now using them on slopes
in place of grass which has to be mowed and turns brown
in the heat.
Azaleas are truly amazing. There are so many varie es.
Short and wide 'Mothers Day has that bright rose color.
The na ve Delaware White last forever. I s ll have one
from 1967 when my house was built. Remember the
guidelines for plan ng:
Dont plant too deep or in wet soil. In poor draining
soils or clay, plant ve inches above the soil line. Know
whether your azalea likes shade, par al sun or can
take that hot August sun. Mulch around the plant to
retain moisture.

Since I dont own stock in a nursery, I must rely on my old

favorites that somehow come through each year despite
the challenges of weather. We have also been confronted
with more deer EATING so many of our plants and jumping over fences munching at all mes of the day. My
neighbor sees them walking down the middle of the street
at six a.m. and I was surprised to have one ea ng my sedum at twelve noon. Last year, I ploed to dissuade
them by placing poisonous plants in front of those I loved,
namely day lilies. It didnt work the deadly plants Brugmania [trumpet lily], dont ower un l August and the
day lilies bloom in June and July. Score 0 to 1. Onward!!
I did have some successes. I placed soE bird nehng over
some of my large hosta. The leaves supported the nehng
and kept the deer from ea ng them. I also poured human
male urine around other hosta several days in a row and
the deer no longer eat those plants. I told my husband he
is contribu ng liquid gold! It doesnt sound so strange
when you know that the commercial product sold in
stores is made from coyote urine.
All

was
plan ng a
simple border of liriope and daodils. Both of these plants keep mul plying,
give great spring color of yellow and green, and the deer
dont eat them. Have you no ced the variegated yellow
and green liriope at the entrance to the pool? It has lile

Anyone have tall grasses that are several years old and
the inside core of the plant has died out? One way to deal
with this is to dig up the plant, using an axe, split the plant
into sec ons and replant. An easier way is to get a drill
with a hole saw (a special bit used for cuhng large holes
in wood), and drill out the center of the plant. Drill down 6
to 8 inches through the crown stopping occasionally to
clear out soil and dead roots. It is not easy but saves
heavy liEing. The rest of the season new roots will grow
back and ll in the gap.

Several friends have told me they spray white vinegar on
weeds and feel it is not only eec ve but doesnt hurt the
environment.
