Introduction

With increasing number of medical complications arising out of stress or various

bacterial and genetic disorders, people are depending more and more on

medications for improving their health. The direct implication of taking various
medicines is the increase in probability of drug interaction.

The drug interaction does not only include the reaction between two drugs

administered together but it also includes interaction with food intake and drug

metabolism due to different genetic factors. The estimated morbidity accounts to

$177.4 billion in the US itself.

The aim of the MedCare project is to build next generation of healthcare systems
which can help the patients in maintaining their medical history and assist the
doctor in recommending medicines in such a way that the harmful drug

interaction is minimized. This will further account for decrease in the morbidity

and mortality rates due to harmful drug reactions. Also, the project will provide a
path to access data about unclassified drug interactions, which can further help
improve the research going on in the field of drug study.

Objectives

Provide a centralized system for maintaining patient health record

Providing one click access of medical history and current prescription to the
patient.
Providing quick access of patients medical records and history to the
doctor.
Providing an easy to use system to the medical professionals to suggest
possible drug interactions and their severity in accordance with the drug
interaction database and patients medical history and current
prescriptions.

Project Components
Administrator Login

The administrator login forms the first part of the MedCare system. The
responsibilities of the administrator are:
1). Register new doctors into the database.

2). Maintain the synchronization of the system with the central server.

Doctor Login

The Doctor Login interface provides a way to authenticate the registered doctors
into the system. The responsibilities of the doctor include:
1). Register new patients.

2). Update the patient diagnosis into the system.

3). Update the current prescription into the system.

Patient Registration

The patient registration component is required to register new patients as well as

update the patients diagnosis and prescription into the system. Patient
registration Module also gives access to the possible drug interaction interface.

Drug Interaction Interface

The interface lists the current drug interactions that might happen with the
prescribed medicines to the doctor.

MedCare Application

The application is a smartphone based application to provide easy access of

patients current prescription along with timely notifications of taking medicines if
there are any.

RESTful Web Services API

The Web API provides restricted access of the central database to the
authenticated clients using API keys. The API will help build 3rd party applications
using easy to access web based protocols.

Future Goals

Building a comprehensive database of drug interactions sourced from

public literature.
Making developers build 3rd party applications that integrate into the core
database.
