How neuroscience advances can help

you cope with stress in the workplace
ADVANCES in neuroscience mean
weve never been in a better position to understand how our bodies
physically respond to the challenges of daily life and how to help
ourselves become more resilient.
Dr Tara Swart reveals essential
neuroscience insights for coping
with the stresses and strains of the
workplace.
1. Make time to look after your
body
Your body isnt a taxi for your
brain. You cant think properly if
you arent getting enough sleep,
arent eating properly or dont
exercise. You will be more prone to
allowing unconscious bias to affect
your decisions if you havent slept
or exercised.
2. Dont forget to check in with
your emotions
Disregarding the effect of emotions on decision-making is a massive leadership mistake. You must
engage both the logical and emotional side of your brain. Women
are faster at integrating logical and
emotional data because they have
more physical connections between
the left and right sides of their
brains than men.

3. Your body is probably trying to

tell you something
When you have a strong gut
feeling about a course of action,
it could be the manifestation of
accumulated wisdom. I see leaders
become braver and more expert
at trusting their gut instinct. You
also need to read the physical
signs body language of others,
and the signs that your own body
is showing you. Too many times I
have met leaders who ignored chest
pains and later experienced heart
attacks.
4. Its hard to let go of psychological pain
The same part of the brain
responds to psychological and
physical pain but, when we experience psychological pain, the brain
doesnt release opioids to counter
that pain. This mean the pain lingers in the body for longer.
5. Cortisol harms your health
and that of your colleagues
When the body is under stress, it
releases a hormone called cortisol.
If you are chronically stressed,
cortisol levels in the body remain
high, which erodes immunity and
causes persistent colds, and even

cancer and heart attacks.

Cortisol also leaks out of our
skin via sweat: studies have shown
that leaders stress levels adversely
affect their colleagues because of
this hormone, and have caused
dominoes of heart attacks in
high-stress environments such as
financial trading floors.
6. Poor sleep is seriously bad for
your brains health
During sleep, the brain undertakes a cleansing process that
cleans out proteins and neurotoxins: this generally takes between
seven and nine hours. Just one
per cent of the population doesnt
need that much sleep to complete
the cleansing cycle. Recent studies
have shown that brains not getting
enough sleep develop similarities
with those of Alzheimers sufferers.
Disrupted sleep has also been
shown to cause a fall in IQ of
between five and eight points the
following day.
7. Exercise and meditation physically change your brain
Voluntary exercise triggers a
hormone that encourages neuroplasticity and the growth of new

neurons. And meditating for three

times a week for eight weeks has
been shown to result in the development of more folds in the surface

of the brain, which makes you

more able to cope with stress.
