Release 12 - Small Cell enhancements

Drivers
Cost effective dense small cell deployments
Improved mobility management in dense small cell deployments
Need for Interference management

Key Release 12 features

Dual connectivity for LTE
small cell on/off
256QAM

3GPP 2012

3GPP Studies:
TR 36.932 - Scenarios and requirements for small cell enhancements for LTE
TR 36.872 - Study on Small Cell Enhancements for LTE Physical-layer aspects
TR 36.842 - Study on Small Cell Enhancements for LTE Higher-layer aspects
Small Cells World Summit, London 12th June 2014

3GPP 2014

Dual connectivity for LTE

TR 36.842 looks at:
Inter-node radio resource
aggregation, using radio resources
in more than one eNB in Scenario
#1 - Improving cell edge
throughput
3GPP 2012
Inter-node radio resource
aggregation, anchoring
connection to the macro cell while
boosting data-rate via the small
cell in Scenario #2
Faster transitions for small cell
on/off to be based on discovery
enhancement and dual
connectivity (TR 36.872)
Small Cells World Summit, London 12th June 2014

3GPP 2014

Small cell on/off

More eNBs implies higher interference level in the air
interface and more power consumption of the networks
Having dormant nodes will help address these challenges and
will allow available capacity to match the load
TR 36.872 considers the following
schemes:
3GPP 2012

Baseline schemes without any on/off

Long-term on/off schemes for energy saving
Semi-static on/off schemes
Ideal, dynamic on/off schemes
New Carrier Type study and introduction

Small Cells World Summit, London 12th June 2014

3GPP 2014

Higher order modulation scheme

(256 QAM)

Small cells proximity to UE brings opportunity for

higher order modulation, at 256 QAM downlink
TR 36.872 contains evaluation results of 256QAM
Concludes that downlink higher order modulation
(256QAM) is beneficial in evaluated indoor sparse
small cell scenarios with low mobility

3GPP 2014

10

Multi-antenna technology
3GPP finalising enabler for 3D channel model
Allows evaluation of features such as:
UE-specific elevation beamforming
vertical sectorisation
3GPP 2012
full-dimension MIMO with large number of antennas

Mitigates challenge of
fragmented spectrum
Release 12 defines up to 3carrier downlink band
3GPP 2012
combinations

aggregated is 60 MHz

Small Cells World Summit, London 12th June 2014

3GPP 2014

12

MTC low-cost and long-range

Aim to reduce modem cost and improve range for low data
rate, delay tolerant usage
Low cost enablers

New low data rate UE category (~1Mbps max throughput)

1 RX antenna operation
3GPP 2012
Narrowband data channel operation
Half-duplex operation

Coverage enhancements
Receiver, repetition and bundling techniques to extend coverage of
control and data channel

Small Cells World Summit, London 12th June 2014

3GPP 2014

13

Public Safety
LTE chosen as next-generation nationwide public safety
broadband network in the USA beyond the current P.25 system

public
safety footprint
