The Little Prince ( La Pétite Prince )

by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Have you ever read children book for grown-ups? If not, you must read The Little Prince,
an adventure-philosophy book wrote by Antoine Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. This book is
combining adventure and philosophy. The story is about The Prince’s journey and met
various creatures in his way to find the meaning of life.

The narrator- a pilot -crashed his airplane in Sahara. One day, he awakened by children
voice who asked him to draw a sheep. That’s how he gets acquainted with The Prince. The
Prince lives in a very small planet (asteroid) with three volcanoes and a special rose. He
spends his days caring for it, pulling out little baobab trees because if not, it’ll rip his
planet apart. Then, The Prince left his planet for journey to planets. Each planet he visited
is inhabited by one odd grown-up. First, The King who love powers but there are nothing to
be ruled. The Conceited Man, who love to be admired but he lives alone. The Drunkard,
who drinks to forget that he is ashamed of drinking. The Businessman, who is always busy
counting the stars. The Lamplighter, who lives on an asteroid which rotates once a minute
and he always turn on-off the lamp once every a minute. The Geographer, who spends his
time making maps, but never go anywhere. Then on Earth, the Prince doesn’t see anyone
but snake and a desert flower. Then he find a whole row of rosebushes and realize that
rose in his planet doesn’t special. But then he met a fox, who explains to the Prince that
his rose is unique and special, because the rose could tamed him and make him care for
the rose. Then finally he meet men, the narrator. One day, he realizes that he has
responsibility with his rose, so he came back to his small planet.
The main characters in this book are the Prince and the Narrator. The Prince is a loveable
person. He is care for his planet especially his rose. He is honest, simple minded, and
curious. He is curious about life and the meaning of life. He has pure heart, so he doesn’t
have bad and complicated mind like grown-ups. He learned from the fox that the
important things in life cannot be seen with the eye, but only felt with the heart. This
makes him realize that his rose is really very special. Narrator acquaintance with the
Prince makes him feels very close to him because the Prince shows him to use heart and
the important thing in life.

I really like this book. I think this book is the most romantic book ever made, even more
romantic than Romeo and Juliet. It have simple story, yet it has deep meaning. The fox
realize us that we have responsible with everything we can tame. When we can tame, it
means we love them and they love us. This book not only about romantic, but also life.
From this book, we can learn that visible things are only shells that the real are hidden
inside. Matters, money, position, power are only make men forgot the meaning of life and
using their heart.

I would recommend the book to everyone, in every age and gender, especially for adult.
Because this book could remind them that if we have problem, it caused by complicated
mind. We just need no simplify it, use our heart, and more enjoy in life. Also, remind adult
to take care of their friends, family, pets, and everything that close and have meaning in
their life because we have responsibility with them. Let’s enjoy the book.
