Original tittes in English, Gerrnan and French have been retainad; in other languages the translated titles used by publishers have generally been followed. Concertos are listed as Concerto for..., even if this deviates from the original title; Zweites Klavierkonzert, for example, is listed as Concerto for piano and orchestra no. 2. Overtures, suites or parts from targe-scale compositions are listed under the title of the complete work, for example Peter Grimes: Four sea interludes, or Gétterdémmerung: Siagtried'’s Rheinfahrt. Each title is followed by the required number of timpanists plus percussionists. An apostrophe after a number indicates a timpanist doubling percussion, or @ percussionist doubling timpeni, For example: 1 timpanist plus 3 percussionists no timpanist, 1 percussionist doubling timpani 2 timpanists, one of them doubling percussion, plus 4 percussionists, two of them doubling timpari. Determination of the number of timpanists and percussionists, and the distribution of parts, is often a matter of interpretation. In theatrical productions, for example, the number of percussionists needed for on-stage parts is primarily a question for the conductor or director, and may aiso depend on the size of the stage, pit and theatre. An alternative distribution is therefore sometimes given in brackets. Whenever practical benefit can be gained from a percussionist doubling a (simple) cetesta part, this is mantioned too. Below each title the distribution of instruments among the players is given in the language used by the composer and/or publisher. Notes and particularities are added in itaties. Timpani Since every timpanist has his own idea about the number and size of the instruments to be used, only the required number of players is mentioned, not the number of instruments, Works with only timpeni and no other percussion are not listed. (This information is usually stated correctly in publisher's catalogues.) Cymbals Where cymbals are mentioned, this may refer to both clashed cymbals (piatti a2) and suspended cymbals). Some composers, including Mahler and Prokotiev, prescribe the use of clashed or suspendad cymbals exactly. Others, like Debussy, usually teave this interpretation to the performer, A specification is given only where different types of cymbals are distributed over two or more players. Bass drum and cymbals According to prevailing performance practice, in this handbook parts for bass drum and ‘cymbals are assigned to two players, unless the composer explicitly prescribes a single player for both instruments (cymbal attached to bass drum). 1 Adams, John A M1 Adams, John Century rolls - 142 1.
