Spice of life
Researchers at Nottingham University may
have made the hottest discovery in medical
science. It’s thought that the latest defence
against cancer could be … a curry. Capsaicin,
the active component of chillies, has produced
"startling" results in tests to kill a variety of
tumour cells including pancreatic cancer, one of
the most difficult versions of the disease to
treat. The discovery could lead to the
production of cheaper drugs to cure a variety of
cancers.
Talent spotting
Nottingham is to hold its first creative business
awards this year to recognise and celebrate
excellence in this vibrant and growing sector.
The city is a hotbed for creative talent, from
film makers inspired by Shane Meadows to
fashion designers following in the footsteps of
Paul Smith. The City Council’s economic
development team is supporting Nottingham
Creative Network, Nottingham Trent University
and local firm HBJ Gateley to run the awards,
culminating in a black tie ceremony in the
autumn.
