J. P.

Knapp Early College High School

2014-2015 SIP/Impact Plan Goal Results Summary
Goal #1
The Staff will communicate with 100% of J. P. Knapp parents/guardians each 9 week period on issues related to J. P.
Knapp Early College.
NCNS End of Year Summary
This has been a real success this year based on increased parent involvement, increase in applications, and an increase in
enrollment of target population. Thoughts for next year center on continuing effective practices put in place this year including
more accessible open house sessions, use of marketing opportunities (e.g. marquis board), participation in community events,
and with the College of the Albemarle.
Goal #2
100% of teachers will reflect on their daily instruction to increase student performance in all classes as measured
by college success and testing data.
NCNS End of Year Summary
J. P. Knapp's results speak to the point of impact of increase staff reflection on data and practice. Staff took a close look at EVAAS
over the course of this year. This combined with additional work in staff meetings to ensure all voices were heard through use of
Critical Friends protocols, and increased accountability put in place by school leadership have helped school meet this goal. The
Administration feels staff is getting more comfortable with data based on consistent work throughout the year, even teachers
who struggled or resisted early on are showing improvement. We hope to continue grounding staff reflection in data points to
influence instruction. Mr. Basnight and Mrs. Fallon also be led a session at the (North Carolina New Schools National Conference)
Summer Institute in July on use of data to inform personalization for all students.
Goal #3
100% of staff members will address "college- and career-ready skills" in all classes throughout the school day.
NCNS End of Year Summary
Progress was made this year and grade level seminar curriculum has been refined and is seen as effective. Staff needs some
additional work (and support) to implement with fidelity so that all students benefit in all classes. This goal will be continued into
the 2015-2016 Plan.

Goal #4
Staff will actively identify and address varying levels of student understanding and/or proficiency in each lesson
(daily) to support personalized learning for each student.
NCNS End of Year Summary
Biggest movement on this goal with staff was increase staff buy-in around the NC New Schools Design Principles, aligned
instructional strategies, and overall student-centered teaching and learning. School leadership took intentional steps to set
school-wide expectations for staff supported with walkthroughs, feedback, and PD. This year, leadership plans to continue this
focus with a specific focus on formative assessment. Instructional Coach Vickie Wells helped model protocols for staff PD and
staff member Dr. Donna Corbo was trained in Critical Friends process this year. Mr. Basnight sees an opportunity to use Critical
Friends Protocol strategies with Instructional Rounds to further support staff collaboration around improving teaching and
learning.
Goal #5
Increase Teacher Retention and/or Reduce Teacher Turnover Rate
We had one teacher who left our school during the spring semester, who returned to us in July. This essentially left our teacher
turnover rate at 0% for the 2015-2016 school year.
