When the values and beliefs of the most powerful people in society dominate and
influence the less powerful
Companies and politicians convinve onsumers and citizens that the interests of the
powerful are common sense and therefore normal or natural

In this case, it is the domination of a peoples cultureways of thinking,
believing, and behavingby those who own the cultures idea factories,
such as the mass media
Once it is complete, he said, hegemony is institutionalized, built into
the rules and routines of a societys institutions.
In the case of the
media, the rule thats rigged the game is the commercial imperative
the rule that says the main business of the media is business.

First and foremost, we should know what does hegemony means. Hegemony in simple words
is domination or power which is used to influence others. In hegemony there are two parties,
the strong and the weak, the powerfull and the powerless, the rich and the poor, the
majority and the minority, the superior and the inferior. The stronger party forced its value
to the weaker party so that the latter think the value is the correct one. Therefore, generally
hegemony can be found everywhere in our life. Politics, rules, schools, even what our
parents, society and friends says can be a form of hegemony. But, to be more specific, I will
only talk about the cultural and media hegemony. Now, these two are strongly connected
with each other. Cultures is the object of hegemony while media is its supporter, its medium,
its tools. Media emphasized and encouraged hegemony.
Many people think that cultural hegemony is just another word for cultural imperialism. I
cant agree more. Now, take example of Americanization as a form of cultural hegemony.
American has so much power and influence it is not only influence how we think and behave
but also our politics and economy. Our self identity is shattered slowly until we dont know
ourselves.
What we wear, our jeans and shirts are from the western countries. The fashions that we
followed originated from foreign country. The genre of the music that we hear was imported
from americans, british, and Koreans. we think that pizzas and burgers and steaks are
luxurious and delicious. We watched American made movies. We think imported brands are
cooler. We think and behave more individually, more egoistically, more liberally. We demand
to much freedom. Those are the western or American values that seems to be the current
reality of our country. this is worse in this era because of how information and
communication can be so easily accessed through mass media.
Televisions, social medias, radios, internets, news programs, even celebrity news programs.
Televisions often play foreign movies, radios play foreign musics,

The free press act, but does the press really free? Or is it just the puppets of the rich and
powerful. We cant forget that medias need money to keep running.

like some tv programs are identicals to foreign shows: Korean

We took some elements of popular foreign shows and put it into Indonesia shows:
vampire, werewolves, materialism, fashion trends, behaviors, attitudes. (this is
worse because we have taken foreign values as our own)
To many medias critize Indonesia and lacking in promoting Indonesia values and local
cultural because they are not commercial.

Media should be free of any influence. But, mass medias want more money, most media are
owned by private sectors, they want to industrialize and capitalize their business. The
owners will promote their own values and the values of those who pay them.
Effects
Dont forget that cultural hegemony paved ways for political and economic hegemony. It
makes us more susceptible to the political and economic influence of other nations. We
become more ignorant of their hidden agendas.
Moreover, we will lose our national identity, our own culture. we are in the middle of national
identity crisis, other cultures impact us so greatly.
