6.2.1
The above information mainly applies to single line systems and systems where
several lines are installed. A line consists of a set of transducers/sensors/digital
and analog in-/outputs, one or several products and other settings that only apply
to one specific line. E.g. a customer has 2 beverage production lines - one for
bottles one for cans - on each line he has installed a Brixmonitor with DRPn and
25 different products. The used inputs and outputs are different. E.g. Line 1 uses
input Transd.1 for the DPRn and line 2 uses Transd.2 for the DPRn etc.
C48IB01B
19
There are some differences when using a multiple line system. The main screen
of a 2-line system could look like figure Fig. 6 - 4
1 Line Selector
Fig. 6 - 4
Use the line selector in the header line to switch between lines.
In addition to the above layout which uses the entire screen for one line there is
one layout which shows all lines in one screen. This layout is selected via
<Layout> and "Show all lines". The screen of a 2-line system could look like Fig.

The alarm limits defined for each quantity are used for the scaling of graphical
output fields too! All 4 limits are represented by red and yellow lines in the graph.
See figure below.
In the above example the user would see the Original Extract concentration in the
graphical output field, time-axis = 5 minutes = 300 seconds and the y-axis is 100%
+ 20% . Since HiHi - LoLo alarm limits gives 1.5 Plato and the Scaling of the
output field is set to 10% the visible range of the y-axis is 1.8 Plato.

We recommend to adjust only the final results such as concentration, ethanol, real
extract, ... If you adjust the basic raw values (e.g. density, temperature or sound
velocity) the derived concentration values are affected as well. Example: The
mPDS 5 uses the adjusted density value to calculate the concentration of
2-component liquids.
If the adjustment does not have the expected effect reset the adjustment and
adjust only one value per adjustment procedure.
35
Note that the term calibration means comparing a measuring instrument with a
more accurate reference instrument without changing something.
Adjustment always means changing the reading by means of a software
adjustment parameter in the mPDS 5 ("Gain" or "Offset").
8.2.1
Fig. 8 - 2
2. Step 2: Analyse the sample in the laboratory and compare the values with
the saved values on the mPDS 5 ("calibration").
36
C48IB01B
Tip
If the deviation between the saved values and the laboratory reference
values is negligible (e.g. < 0.02 Brix for beverages, <0.05 % for 2component liquids, ...) quit the "Laboratory adjustment" screen by tapping
<Main Screen>. Repeat this calibration procedure any time according to your
calibration interval.
The user decides which deviations are acceptable and which are not. Example:
The target concentration is 10.3 % the limits are: Lo=10.15 %, Hi=10.45;
LoLo=10.05; HiHi=10.55 %. For such a product we would estimate that any
deviation between 0 ... 0.05 % is acceptable and an adjustment is not necessary.
Such a decision also depends on the accuracy of your laboratory reference
method.
If the deviation between the saved values and the laboratory reference
values is too high enter the laboratory reference values of the quantity you
want to adjust by tapping the "A" symbol in the corresponding line.
After entering the laboratory reference value, the pre-calculated gain-factor
will be displayed.
Fig. 8 - 3
3. Step 3: Finish the adjustment and save the new gain values by tapping
<Finish adjustment> in the buttons area. This can take a few seconds.
If the process values have been saved already and you tap <Save values> once
again, a screen appears which informs you that the old values will be overwritten.
Confirm the security query by tapping <Yes> if you want to repeat the entire
laboratory adjustment procedure.

8.2.2
8.2.2.1
Product types "Beer 1"/"Beer 2" equal the former Beermonitor 2 and provide a
wide range of measuring values with different interconnections.
- The basic raw values of "Beer 1"/"Beer 2" are density, sound velocity,
temperature and in many cases CO2 Carbo. These values are normally not
adjusted.
- From these basic values the mPDS 5 derives "Density 20 C" and
"Ethanol %v/v 20C". These 2 quantities should be adjusted according to results
from a PBA-B (Packaged Beverage Analyser - Beer from Anton Paar ... Alcolyser/
DMA). When these 2 most important values match the laboratory results then all
other derived quantities must be correct as well and no additional adjustment is

- From the adjusted "Density 20C" and "Ethanol %v/v 20 C" the mPDS 5
calculates: "Ethanol %w/w" , "Original Extract", "Real Extract" "Specific Gravity"
and "Present Gravity"
- From the adjusted "Ethanol %w/w" , "Original Extract", "Real Extract" "Specific
Gravity" the mPDS 5 calculates: "OriginalGravity", "Apparent Extract" , "Apparent
Deg. Ferm.", "Real Deg Ferm.", "Real Deg.Ferm.USA", "Calories USA" "Real
Ext./Eth. Ratio" and "Eth./Real Ext. Ratio".

Tip
Note that there are 4 levels in the adjustment hierarchy of "Beer 1" and "Beer 2".
If you adjust a quantity in the highest level no other quantities are affected.
If values of a lower level are adjusted all higher level values could be affected.
8.2.3
Manual Adjustment
The manual adjustment of the mPDS 5 is only recommended for users who are
familiar with calculating the gain and offset value from reference laboratory values
according to the following equation e.g.:
concentration (adjusted) = concentration (raw) * gain + offset
The mPDS 5 uses the above equation for each adjustable quantity. Before
making any adjustment or after resetting the adjustment all "Gain" - factors are 1
and all "Offsets" are 0. Hence the adjusted values equal the raw values.
TIP
The mPDS 5 uses only the adjusted values for the main screen, the analog
interfaces and the PROFIBUS.
To enter the gain and offset values
1. Tap <Menu> and select "Adjustments > Manual adjustment".

The following list describes the main transducers and functions of all product
types. Most product types accept signals from optional transducers and
transmitters (e.g. Carbo CO2 analyser for beverages containing CO2, oxygen
transmitters, pressure transmitters, etc.)
Product types replace the well known application programs of the mPDS 2000/
1100. All features previously included in a specific application program are now
part of a specific product type.
Note that the main transducers are either DPRn = density transducers or SPRn =
Sound velocity transducers or DSRn = density and sound velocity transducers.
See the following compatibility table:

Typically the mPDS 5 offers a selection of the types below. Product types
are pre-selected before delivery to match the needs of different fields of
applications.
TIP

All product types for beverages that contain CO2 can also be used with an
optional Carbo CO2 anaylser. If only a Carbo CO2 analyzer is used on a specific
line then choose the product types starting with "Carbo ...".

Alarm Limits
Defining product-specific alarm limits is very important to make sure that your
production lies within specifications. If measurement values are out of these
limits, the background colour of the graphical and numerical fields will change
from white to yellow (warning) to red (alarm) and the symbol in the upper part of
the status area changes.
It is possible to set-up digital alarm outputs. Whenever a limit connected to such
an output is exceeded the output goes to "high" status. Hence an alarm lamp or
beeper (beacon) connected to this digital output would be activated. Whenever a
digital alarm output is active the status button on the touch screen goes to "alarm/
error".
For each measurement quantity 4 alarm limits are available: HiHi, Hi and LoLo,
Lo.
Defining limits
1. Tap <Menu> and select "Product Settings".

In addition to the limit monitoring function described above it is possible to link one
or more limits to external devices via physical outputs (digital output or relay).
E.g. it is possible to use DIO 3 of the I/O board in slot 3 as warning output. Then
DIO 3 is high when the Lo/Hi limits of ethanol or original extract are exceeded. It
is possible to use DIO 4 of I/O board in slot 3 as alarm output. Then DIO 4 is high
when the HiHi/LoLo limits of ethanol or original extract are exceeded. Have a look
at your configuration sheets or use Davis 5 for further details.
Depending on the individual configuration, one or more digital/relay outputs could
be used for warning/alarm lamps, etc.
These "physical" alarms can be reset (=deactivated) for a certain time directly via
the message window.
9.4
The functions of product parameters depend on the selected product type. They
are used to store formula coefficients, target values, limits, etc.
The functions using the listed product parameters are described in the chapters
after the table below. Some functions are quite complex and require additional
knowledge not covered by this manual. However, in these cases the necessary
settings have been made before delivery and the user doesnt need to change the
product parameters.

Control function
The program calculates the "Closing Time" using the "Density Ref. Temp."at the
beginning of the control cycle. If this "Density Ref. Temp." is greater then the "Set
Density [g/cm]", the digital output used for control is high for a certain time e.g.
controlling the adding of water.
"Closing Time" is calculated in the following way:
"Closing Time" = abs [P * ( TARG - DCOMP)] = abs [P * DEV.]

The mPDS 5 sets the digital output used for control to "high" for
"Closing Time" +/- 1 seconds. There is an uncertainty of about 1 second.
The shorter the cycle time the greater the relative influence of this uncertainty.
Special alarm function:
This product type uses a digital output as a special alarm output.
The alarm limits are derived from the following product parameters:
Lower limit = "Target Dens.[g/cm] - Tolerance[g/cm]
Upper limit = "Target Dens.[g/cm] + Tolerance[g/cm]
If the density at reference temperature ("Density Ref.Temp.") exceeds one of the
2 limits the digital output used for the alarm function gets "high".
Otherwise this output is "low". See configuration of the mPDS 5 for details.

input goes from "1" to "0" density and temperature are automatically stored as
"Skim-Dens" and "Skim-Temp". This finishes the skim milk adjustment procedure.
During this procedure "Concentration Fat" is set to "0".
The frequency of the skim milk adjustment must be found out empirically. As long
as the deviation to the laboratory reference lies within acceptable limits no skim
milk adjustment is necessary otherwise start an adjustment procedure.
In addition to the skim milk adjustment it is possible to perform a product specific
adjustment of the displayed "Concentration Fat".
The residual fat content of the skim milk can be entered as "Skim-Fat".
Example:
Density of cream: 0.9970 g/cm
Density of skim milk: 1.0241 g/cm ("Skim-Dens")
Temperature (skim milk="Skim-Temp"; cream = "Temp-C"): 45 C
"Offset" (of "Concentration Fat"): 0.12
"Skim-Fat": 0.24
From the density difference: 1.0241 - 0.9970 = 0.0271 g/cm the application
program calculates a fat content of 20%. Both the Offset (of "Concentration Fat")
and the fat content of skim milk "Skim-Fat" are added in a seconds step.
The mPDS 5 reads "Concentration Fat" = 20.36 %

Fig. 9 - 5
E.g. during Start-up or if a valve is suddenly closed or opened, spikes might occur
in the graph of certain quantities (see Fig. 9 - 6). By defining a spike filter, such
spikes can be removed. The spike filter is defined by two parameters, "Filter Size"
in seconds and "Amplitude" in %. Fig. 9 - 6 and Fig. 9 - 7 show the behaviour for
"Filter Size"= 10 (sec) and Amplitude=5%. The spike filter compares the current
value with the last 10 values (seconds). If the current original extract value
deviates by more than 5 % from one of the 10 historical values, the last but one
value overwrites the current one. So a short spike will be cut out completely.
Normal fluctuations of below 5 % will be displayed in the corresponding graph.
TIP
C48IB01B
Do not set the "Amplitude" to very small numbers equal or below to the normal
fluctuations, otherwise the values will appear to be completely frozen. Do not
activate the spike filter if you are not sure about its function.

If "Filter Size" is set to "20" like in Fig. 9 - 8 the filter averages the values of the
last 20 seconds. Instead of the raw unfiltered original extract value the mPDS 5
calculates and displays the arithmetic average original extract of the last 20
seconds. Fluctuations are considerably reduced.
TIP
C48IB01B
The moving average filter increases the reaction time e.g. of alarm functions
related to these values. Enter the lowest "Filter Size" which smoothes the results
sufficiently.

3. The following chapters explain the basic wiring and functions of all digital and
analog inputs and outputs no matter which specific output is used on which
board.
16.2.1
WARNING
All in- and outputs (inlcuding relay outputs) connected to mPDS 5 have to
accord with PELV (protective extra-low voltage) of EN 61140 or SELV
specification of EN 60950, i.e. maximum voltage Umax must not exceed 24 V
+ 20% = 28.8 V.
In addition to the maximum voltage the proper isolation of the connected
electrical circuits is crucial.
The power supply must lie in the range 24 V DC -15% +20 % and the maximum
power consumption of the mPDS 5 is 60 W.
NOTICE
Do not connect mPDS 5 to the power supply immediately after unpacking. Wait
for a few hours until mPDS 5 has adapted to the ambient temperature, then
activate.
The screw terminals for the power supply are located on CPU board always
in Slot 1 at the rear of mPDS 5.

TIP
Digital inputs detect the status of the connected signal (high or low). These
inputs are isolated from the mPDS 5.
A voltage signal must be connected to the "positive" (DI 1...12) and the
"ground" terminals ("0"=low: < 5 V; "1"=high > 15 V).
Its possible to use a passive switch between DIO+ and the required input.
"Hold" - function:
In many configurations digital input 1(of the Transducer board) is used to hold
("freeze") the concentration values. This means that as long as the hold-input is
high most results are frozen to the values when the hold-input changed from 0
to 1.
This feature typically is used for beverage applications during e.g. filler stopped
conditions. When the hold-input goes to 0 the concentration values are updated
again after a certain delay time. The delay time can be changed via Davis 5.

C48IB01B
The CD supplied with each mDPS 5 contains the required GSD file with
several different modules. When integrating the mPDS 5 into your PLC
PROFIBUS project (e.g. Simatic manager) you must select one input module
and one output module as specified on the configuration data sheet.
Set the correct PROFIBUS address on the mPDS 5 as expected by the PLC,
otherwise no communication is possible.

TIP
This example does not claim to address all the issues involved. To
completely understand the information, comprehensive knowledge of the
used hardware and software and the tools on the PC is required. This
knowledge cannot be imparted within the framework of this instruction
manual.
There is exactly one input and one output data block used to exchange
information between the mPDS 5 and the PROFIBUS master(PLC).
Terminology: Input means input to the PLC and output of the mPDS 5 and
vice versa.
Tip:
106
Use exactly one input module and one output module to be able to use the mPDS
5 in PROFIBUS network. Do not use the "Universal module"!
C48IB01B
The mPDS 5 is able to deal with 1 ... 4 production lines and therefore the input
data block is shared between the available lines.
The first byte of the input data block is used as general mPDS 5 status byte.

The mPDS 5 is able to deal with 1 ... 4 production lines and therefore the output
data block is shared between the available lines.
Writing parameters:
After writing parameters via the output data block to the mPDS 5 and sending the
acknowledge command ("enter") it is compulsory to wait at least 2 seconds before
writing the next parameters. During these 2 or more seconds the output data
block must not be changed.
Reading parameters:
It is possible to read parameters from the mPDS 5. For this reason the PLC must
tell the mPDS 5 via the output data block which parameters (index and type) it
wants to read. Each new request must be terminated with an acknowledge
command ("enter"). The mPDS 5 then sends the requested parameters in the
input data block back to the PLC. These parameters are part of the input data
block until a new request has been sent.

The output data block is shared between all installed lines. Each line gets exactly
the same memory space - in some configurations some bytes are not used at the
end of the output data block.
The number of measuring values that can be transferred from the PLC to the
mDPS 5 depends on the number of lines installed on the mPDS 5. See table
below. Each measuring value needs 4 bytes.
Number of
lines on one
mPDS 5
A fixed number of 4 parameters can be requested from the mPDS 5 and are
part of the output data block. 2 Bytes are needed for each requested parameter.
The number of parameters that can be changed depends on the number of
lines and on the size of the output data block. For each parameter it is necessary
to send index, type and value (6 bytes per parameter).

17.4.5
When a PLC is connected via PROFIBUS it doesnt make sense to connect digital
outputs from the PLC to digital inputs of the mPDS 5 additionally. So the PLC can
simulate digital outputs by setting certain bits of the output data block. Two bytes
of the output data block are used for this purpose.
The mPDS 5 configuration data sheet tells you which virtual digital outputs are
assigned to which digital input channels of the mPDS 5. The function of the digital
signals should be clear by the used name (e.g. "Hold", ...)
17.4.6
118
C48IB01B
To select a new product use Bytes 0 and 1 from the output data block. It is not
necessary to send an additional acknowledge command.
You can read back the current product (number) from the input data block bytes
4 and 5.
TIP
To avoid confusion make sure that the PLC is the only device changing the
product number. No external switch should be connected and the product
selection function in the main screen must not be used.
17.5.2
It is possible to change product parameters using the cyclical output data block.
Write index, type and value into the output data block in the right place and send
an additional acknowledge command.
C48IB01B

Example:
You want to enter the alarm limits of the "Original extract" of the product type Beer
1. The index of the "Original extract" for the product type "Beer 1" is "2". The
parameter types can be looked up in the above table. The new alarm limits are:
LoLo=10.5
Lo=10.7
HI = 11
HiHi=11.2

20.1 Message List - Inactive Output fields
If an error occurs, the symbol in the upper right corner of the status area
changes.
Status = ok
Instrument and measuring values are within warning/alarm
limits
Status = Warning
e.g. One or more warning limits exceeded, special
warnings could come up reminding the user to carry out a
maintenance e.g. on a Carbo CO2 analyser
Status = Error
- mPDS 5 errors (configuration, etc. )
- one or more alarm limits exceeded
- transducer disconnected or defective

20 Troubleshooting
Tap the status button to open the message list window. Messages are self
explanatory. To close the message list window tap on the "X" in the upper right
corner.
TIP
If you want to export the current message list to a USB flash drive use menu
"Service > Message List Export".
If an exceeded limit is linked to a physical alarm output (DIO or Relay) a reset
button is shown right beside the message.
You can reset (=deactivate) the physical alarm for a certain time by tapping on
this field.
If a sensor/transducer is defective or not connected, related measuring
quantities are invalid and instead of the expected value the string inactive is
displayed in the output field. E.g. if an mPDS 5 is set up for a DSRn and the
DSRn is defective or not connected all output field linked to density/sound
velocity/temperature will read inactive.
You find below examples of common error messages and suggestions of
corrections.
