Safe work practices
Two or more people are not permitted to work from the same ladder unless it is specifically
designed for two people. Safety instructions should be given before employees use a twoperson step ladder.

Extension ladders must no longer than 11 meters (36 feet) when fully extended.
Stepladders and platform ladders must not be longer than 3.6 meters (12 feet) as
determined by the front rail.
Wooden ladders may not be painted, except for the platform and top step, which should
be painted to indicate not to step there.
Type 1A ladders are recommended. A minimum of Type A ladder is required on this site.
Ladders Inspection
Ladders must be in good condition at all times. The user should inspect the ladder before each
use. If fixed with Scaffold, after weekly inspecting and certifying all scaffolding and ladders, the
designated scaffolding foreman should attach inspection tag (similar to scaffold tags) that
includes the inspection date, color code for the month, area serial number supervisor and
inspectors name/signature. Monthly inspection is carried out by Safety Officers designated for
it.

Bends, dents, cracks, loose or missing rivets, disconnected braces and corrosion weaken a
ladder seriously. Carefully inspect the area around rivet points for hairline stress cracks.
Quarantine any defective ladders immediately, or remove them from the site.
Storing and transporting ladders
Ladders are to be stored on racks protected from the elements, with good ventilation, and
away from excessive heat.
Storage racks shall have sufficient supporting points to avoid sagging. Long ladders need
support every 1.8 meters (6 feet).
Properly support ladders being transported on road, street and highway motor vehicles.
Supporting points should be made of material such as wood or rubber-covered iron pipe,
to minimize abrasion and the effects of road shock.
