Strathmore Town Council is facing a Gordian knot over meeting the provincially-required
10-minute fire response time that could result
in either massive tax hikes for ratepayers or
force developers and builders out of Strathmore through changes to the building code.
The Strathmore Fire Department presented
council with three years worth of data and statistics on Nov. 4, which contradict the findings
of the previously adopted Behr Energy Service
report. According to the fire department, because its volunteer-based, the 10-minute allotment to get to the scene is deemed impossible
to meet the provincially-demanded 90 per cent.
According to the departments documentation,
the team was only able to make it to the scene
in under 10 minutes 18 per cent of the time. As
a result, council was mulling over the option
of implementing a full-time fire department,
which would raise taxes by 16 per cent.
I do think [the Strathmore Fire department]
is asking for a full-time fire department and I
dont think thats unreasonable, but whats critical will be the timing, said Councillor Denise
Peterson.
Our director of finances told us repeatedly
that for each $100,000 we spend over in our
budget it equates to a percentage increase on
the taxes. A full fire department is $1.6 million
and nobody is going to consider 16 per cent
increase in taxes. However, if we want to increase and move forward in the way that [SFD]
is speaking we definitely need the cooperation
of our builders and developers in order to have
the increase tax base growth in our community.
Offering other solutions, council floated the
idea of hiring two full-time staff members in
the meantime to cut down on the wait time. As
a total of four members are required to attend
to the scene, council was discussing the possibility of phasing in a full-time fire department
by adding two members consecutively over six
years, or hiring 12 members immediately. On
the other side of the coin, council was weighing their options of implementing changes to
the building code for development outside of
the 10-minute response area.
According to Alberta Municipal Affairs, buildings should be provided with greater protection from exposure to fires where a fire department is unable to respond to a fire within 10
minutes more than 90 per cent of the time.

free to keep it simple! As this is a night time
parade, we encourage brightly lit, musical
entries that will warm the audience and
promote the spirit of Christmas!
Entry is free, and a cash prize will be awarded to
the three best Christmas Floats!
The attached registration form is to be submitted
by noon on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 to

With much information presented to
council during the regular council meeting, Councillor Pat Fule said, I want to

were not going to rush into anything,
were going to make the best decision
for everyone.

Currently, in Canada, the maximum daily dose of
acetaminophen is set at 4000mg. However, Health
Canada may change this to a lower maximum dose
due to the potential of liver injury caused by taking
too much of the drug. There are 475 preparations
containing acetaminophen in Canada and most are
sold without a prescription. So it would be easy to
get over the current limit.
If you have ever had a colonoscopy, youll have
had to suffer through the bowel-cleansing routine of
fasting and drinking 4 litres of a solution to clean
you out. Not much fun! In the U.S., work is being
done on an edible bowel cleansing product in which
the laxative is incorporated into foods like puddings,
pasta salad and smoothies..a great improvement
on the current method.
Its well-known that the omega-3 fatty acids found
in salmon are good for our heart. Its recommended
we have two servings (3.5 oz) twice a week. Canned
salmon is as good as the fresh fish to satisfy this
advice. Its low in mercury content, a contaminant
found in some fish.
If you have celiacs disease (about 1 in 133

The Western District Historical Society requested the
Town of Strathmore to give
consideration to designating
the former St. Michaels and
All Angels Church and property as a Municipal Historical
Resource, following rumours
that a new mystery landowner is entertaining the idea of a
demolition.
Although the 106-year-old
parish building doesnt meet
the necessary criteria for a
provincial historical site, due
to several changes and an addition over the years, Strathmore can grant designation
to the site as a Municipal Historical Site by bylaw without
seeking the property owners
consent. Because of hearsay

We hope to jointly seek

Students of East Wheatland

of course, our students will

This partnership may also

Benefit concert
for Syrian Family
coming to
Strathmore
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor
After having recently been
matched with a highly vulnerable Syrian family in urgent need of resettlement,
Hope for Syria, a Strathmore-based
fundraising
group, is forging ahead with
their plans for a Christmas
benefit concert with all proceeds going directly to the
refugee family.
The group already raised
the minimum requirement
of $15,000 through private
donations from individuals and local organizations
over a three-week period.
Together with a completed
settlement plan, a sponsorship application was submitted to the Canadian government to bring the family into
Strathmore.
While the requirements
were met, Hope for Syria
anticipates the Hope for the
Holidays concert will bring
in additional funds to make
up for the familys travel
costs, and possible additional expenses.
One thing we want people to know is that there is
no risk for Canadians, said
Heather Russell, organizer
of the Hope for the Holidays
event.
Theyve already gone
through a pretty extensive
process before we even get
their information to match
us together. From there we
are matched based on our
resources for what we can
supply for a rural area, and
what is best for them.
In organizing the event,
Russell received help from
local talent, Alexandrea
Patzer and Terrah Harper,
who recruited the musical line-up for the evening.
Patzer who has a bachelor
degree in vocal performance
from Briercrest College and
has received a variety of
performance awards, and
Harper, a skilled piano, violin and viola player, were
recently asked to perform
in a Calgary event, Music for
Medicine. Consisting of approximately a dozen local
acts, including solo, duet,
and chorus performances,
the benefit concert will
feature cello, piano, guitar
and trumpet instruments in
bringing the Christmas music to life. The Strathmore
Children Choir will also be
performing.
Hope for Holidays is an
evening of musical collaboration between many Strathmore musicians, its a festive
evening of Christmas music,
Russell said.

wA Wind in the Willows Christmas in
Rosebud opened in Rosebuds Opera
House, Nov. 6, telling three Christmas
fables in song.
It starts with Toad of Toad Hall (David Snider) driving recklessly, being sentenced to jail and escaping in time for
Christmas. When his animal friends welcome him home and prepare to leave,
he realizes he doesnt want them to go
-- so they tell Christmas stories.
First, they tell about a peaceful, poetic
dragon and a village thats afraid of him.
The dragon (Snider), St. George ( Joel
Stephanson) and a boy (Natalie Gauthier) dance and sing doo-wop in a mock
battle, convincing the villagers the dragon is conquered. But then the dragon
surprises the villagers by showing up at
the village Christmas feast.
The animals next story is about a
choir-directing monk (Stephanson) who
hears a new Christmas carol from the
angels, but cant remember the final
notes. His donkey (Alix Cowman) sings
only two notes E and Aw but those
are the notes he needs. The show ends
with the animals gathered to sing for the
baby Jesus.
The 12-year-old who attended with us
said Toad was her favorite part, and I
can see why. In the scene where Toad
is in jail, Snider does such an accurate

The Strathmore Spartans senior boys volleyball team are
continuing game in, game out to show they are perennial
contenders to win the provincial banner in a few weeks
time.
What was evident, however, in their home tournament last
weekend was that they never gave up and looked as though
they were on their way to the finals, but a couple missed
opportunities cost them in a nail-biting semi-final in which
the home team lost 16-14 in the third set to Medicine Hat
High School.
It was a good last match for us, said coach Cole Hintz.
Medicine Hat played really well. Its nice to have those
opportunities kind of at the end of the tournament to play
in those very competitive matches where all the little points
matter. Its just kind of helps measure your team a little bit
and sharpen those things that you take of granted. You need
to be able to do the small things when it matters just so you
can respond better in those situations.
Hintz preached to his team throughout the tournament
that they dont need to be too high but have to be mentally
engaged in every point and always have the mindset that
every point is important to them.
He saw a lot of positives come of the semi-final match
especially in the ability to come back.
Thats how you measure your team, said Hintz.
Its not the easy matches that allows you to see where
youve grown. Its the difficult ones, the ones that you lose
that allows you to see what the medal of your team is.
Now looking to zones in a couple weeks in High River,
Hintz thinks his team at this point in the season knows they
have worked really hard, but nothing will be given to them
from teams in a very strong zone this year.
Senior girls head coach Randy Moncks, despite a fifth
place, there was a lot of potential that the players showed
which would help in rebuilding the program in the future.
We continue to work hard, said Moncks.
Our offense is getting better. Weve seemed to be able to
generate a little bit of offense. Our passing has gotten to be
so much better.
He was pleased with the girls compete level as they have
increased their point total to anywhere between 18 and 19
in a set, and he thinks that is a positive that can give them a
chance by taking less errors.
If we can stop all the unforced errors, said Moncks.
We have a run of three or four unforced errors. If we can
just control that then hopefully we can build for next year.
Moncks mentioned he hopes as a lower seed zones host
in a couple of weeks that they can play spoiler as he feels if
they continue to progress that there could be an upset.
If we continue to communicate and work hard at practices and get a little more confidence, said Moncks.
It could happen that we maybe could upset a team and
that would be the fun part of the whole zone experience I
think this year for our team.
Above all else, he wants the girls to have fun and continue
to find consistency in their games as they hosts zones in a
couple of weeks.

We just came together and we talked, said Williams. We told each other what we got to do tonight. We just
came mentally prepared ready to bring
our full heart. Thats what we did and
got the win.
Jacen Bracko scored the go-ahead
goal in the third, while Williams,
Brooker Pretty Youngman and Tyler
Rivest supplied one goal each in the
win.
As for the previous two weekend
games, Williams thought the teams
play was up and down and praised his
squad for bouncing back and working
through the negativity on bench as of
late.
Bracko and Rivest scored in the 8-2
loss to Airdrie on Nov. 7, while Pretty
Youngman and Bracko scored a goal
each in the 3-2 loss to High River on

The Strathmore Polominos Water
Polo Club has one game under their
belt so far this season and the results
that have transitioned from practice to
a game situation have been gratifying
for the coaches.
The girls and the boys are playing
quite well, said head coach Brooke
Zimmerman.
Theyre improving with every practice. They enjoy themselves and having tons of fun and thats what really
matters at the end of the day, is they
want to come back the next day. The
rewarding part for me is they are improving every day and theyre enjoying it.
Zimmerman, who has a wealth of
experience at a university level and as
a coach in the Calgary Renegades program, said she has seen an improvement in the kids fitness levels, which
made the young athletes better swimmers.
Whether theyre passing, playing a
game or doing shooting drills, theyre
always physically active, said Zimmerman.
Every day theyre just getting better
at swimming up and down the pool
a lot faster. Theyre passing a lot better, their legs are better, (and) actually
looking to see who theyre passing to.
Aside from the fitness aspect of the
players games, she added that their
knowledge of the sport has grown immensely because of their eagerness to

SCHULTZ,
Marvin Kenneth
With sadness and heavy hearts we
announce the sudden passing of
Marvin Kenneth Schultz on November
8, 2015 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. Marvin
was born on January 7, 1952 to Frieda (Vogel) and
Edward Schultz in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the
youngest of 5 children (Albert, Eileen, Robert and
Linda). He was predeceased by his father, Edward
Schultz, sister, Eileen, and mother Frieda Mattrick.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife Margaret, and
sons, Joseph, Collin and Jeff Schultz, father-inlaw and mother-in-law, Joe & Cecile Parenteau of
Oyen; sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Anita & Brian
Volk of Sherwood Park; brother-in-law & sister-inlaw, Leonard & Cathy Parenteau of Oyen; as well as
his nieces and nephews. Marvin first met Margaret
on a ski trip in 1986 and it has been an uphill adventure ever since. They were married in 1988 at
St. Bernadettes Church in Calgary. They resided in
Calgary until 1991 and then moved to Strathmore
where they reside today. Their son, Joseph was
born on May 7, 1992. At the time of Marvins passing he worked for the Calgary Board of Education as
a Facility Operator for 25 years. Marvin was passionate about his job and took pride in his work. He
was an intellectual man and a skilled worker with
a quick wit. Marvin was an active member and
served on the CUPE 40 Union for many years with
his last position held as the Chief Shop Steward.
Marvins main background began in Calgary where
he worked as a Certified Journeyman Carpenter
both in residential and commercial construction for
many years. For those that knew Marvin he wore
his heart on his sleeve. When he believed in something he would defend it to the end and would call a
spade, a spade. This is what we admired and loved
about him. His sense of humor was present in any
conversation and always had people laughing and
perhaps sometimes scratching their heads. His
love was the outdoors which included, fishing and
gardening and keeping a beautiful yard. He had a
love for classic cars, reading, cooking and a desire
and thirst for learning. He was indeed a handy man
and could virtually fix anything. Above all and most
important Marvin was a loving husband, father and
friend who will be greatly missed by all. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to
everyone from the EMS, Doctors, Nurses and hospital staff at the Strathmore Hospital, Stars, and to
all the Doctors, Nurses and staff in the CICU 103A
at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary for giving such
compassion and care to Marvin during this time.
Thank you to Dr. Fanning of Strathmore for going
that extra step to follow-up with our family during
this difficult time. Your kindness is admirable and
we thank you. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Lord of All Lutheran
Church, Strathmore at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Dawn
Nelson officiating. There will a luncheon immediately following the services. To send condolences,
please visit Marvins obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca

Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.
